2021-12-18. Electric Patio Heater by Colliford. Remote control. Indoor/Outdoor. IP65 Waterproofing. 1500W. Wall mounted. Black. I ordered this with the intent of installing it in my garage. While my garage door is insulated, it still gets pretty cold in there in the dead of winter. What I noticed straight away is that the electric cord is relatively short at just 6 feet in length. This greatly reduces where you can install it without major electrical rework. Unfortunately for me, I had to get an electrician to add a receptacle to support my intended placement (naturally, I had the Electrician hard wire the unit and not just install a wall receptacle) which meant pulling permits and getting an inspector out to bless it. The good news is that the installation did not affect my home insurance rates. I went with an infrared heater on purpose because of my needs. So what is infrared, and how effective is it? Simply put, infrared heat is radiated heat. Unlike comfort heating from your furnace (where the air is heated then circulated throughout your home via fans and vents), infrared heat acts like the sun and does NOT heat the air. Instead, when the heat waves makes contact with an object heat energy is released regardless of the ambient air temperature, and the object begins to heat up. Think about the sun hitting your face, after a few moments, your face feels hot, and eventually you will sweat. This is because the suns rays are radiating heat and hitting you with it. So is it effective? Well for my purposes, it's exactly what I need. I'm not out to heat up my garage, I don't plan on living in it, but I do want to stay warm when it's extremely cold. Having a radiant heater will also allow me to be in the garage with bundling up. This infrared heater by Colliford heats up quickly. My garage is 12 feet high, and I have the unit mounted on the ceiling rather than the wall. Having redone the electrical to make this happen, the heater is on it's own 20Amp circuit that was wired to a wall switch, which also happens to be smart switch on my home network, so I can access it the heater through an app on my phone. Mind you, this operation is just the basic power, it doesn't have all the functions the remote does, just your basic on off. This unit by Colliford has two heat settings, a 900W setting and a 1500W setting. It also has a few safety features like overheat protection which will auto shut off if it reaches too high an operating temperature, tip-over protection, which puzzles me as this unit is designed for surface mounting (there must be a tripod or stand version of this), and the unit is rated IP65. IP65. IP stands for Ingress Protection and an IP rating is standardized and officially given to a product that undergoes special testing by a certified, independent company. An IP rating consists of four positions. The first two is simply IP and is followed by two numeric digits. The first digit (3rd position) ranges from 0-6 and represents protection from solids. The 2nd digit (4th position) ranges from 0-9 and represents how well it's protected from water. The ratings are as follows: Protection from solids (0-6) 0: The product is not protected against any physical contact or objects. 1: Only protected from objects larger than 50 mm. You won’t accidentally stick your hand into this product, but you can still easily get, say, your finger in. 2: Protected from any object larger than 12.5 mm. This now includes fingers. 3: Protected from things above 2.5 mm, which includes most tools and thick wires. 4: Protected from anything bigger than 1 mm. 5: Dust resistant. Some dust may get through, but it won’t be enough to damage the product. 6: This product is fully dust tight. Protection from Water (0-9) 0: The product offers no protection from water. 1: Can resist water that drips vertically onto the product. 2: Can resist water that hits the product at a 15° angle or less. 3: Can take water sprays of up to 60°. 4: Is resistant to water splashes from any direction. 5: Can resist a sustained, low-pressure water jet spray. 6: Can resist high-pressure, heavy sprays of water. 7: Can be submerged up to 1 meter in water for 30 minutes. 8: Can be submerged deeper than 1 meter. The exact depth is specified by the manufacturer. So this unit by Colliford is fully dust tight and can withstand sustained low-pressure water jet sprays (which means it should be able to handle rainfall, and light storms), pretty impressive! A couple of notables about this unit is that it heats up really fast, within a few seconds. You may notice some burning smell when you first use it, but that's normal and the smell will subside with subsequent usages. But the offset to this fast heating is that this unit is a little pig! If you're going to install this and wire it, be sure to hook it up to a 20A or larger line (generally speaking a line will hold about 80% of its capacity, so a 20A line will support about 16 amps. Lastly, despite it being safe for indoor use, I wouldn't recommend it. Remember, the infrared waves will heat up anything it comes in contact with. Even in the garage, make sure you don't have it aimed at your walls where it can dry them out and damage them, same with your vehicles as the heat will damage the clear coat and/or paint job. While you may want to mount it closer to you for more immediate heat, it's NOT necessary. Remember, the infrared heat waves will travel WITHOUT heating the air and will heat up what it hits or absorbs it. Overall, this is a nice heater. It functions very well, but is a bit of a power hog and uses anywhere from 12.5Amps to 13.63Amps at the 1500W setting (7.5Amps to 8.2Amps at the 900W setting). It heats fast and is exactly what I needed and performs as expected.

Product arrived and would not power on. Return item in good faith on Mid December - vendor confirmed they had received the product back on December 29. Was to refund funds by January 4th. But have not seen a dime yet. Stay away from this vendor. Unless you want to give away your money. Very unhappy

In spite of having read the description, which included the dimensions, I still expected this to be a lot smaller. I also, for some reason, didn't think to measure the wall on which I wanted to mount it. My own fault there. I'm not sure what is wrong with me! As soon as I opened the box and saw the size I knew it wouldn't fit. I wanted to mount it on my bathroom wall. It gets so cold in there but there is floor space for a space heater due to the placement of my outlets. Unless I keep the heater on the one wall, I'd be tripping over the cord all the time. This heater has a remote, so I would have been able to turn it on without getting out of bed first when I woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. That was the plan, anyway. I can use it in my garage instead - my friend is going to be using my garage for woodworking and I think it would be nice if he didn't freeze out there in the winter (it's a detached and unheated/uninsulated garage). I just haven't gotten around to figuring out the bracket and wall mounting. It's also heavier than I expected (or maybe I'm just weaker than I expected?). Anyway, at the moment it has become an Insurmountable Task. I'll get around to it eventually, I hope. I did turn it on for a bit so I could test it, with it just sitting on the floor. It heats up quickly and gives off quite a bit of heat. Not warm enough to heat my entire garage, but does warm up a nice portion of it. I wouldn't say that my garage got warm, but it got warm enough that my friend won't freeze his fingers or ears. Looks very well made, and I expect it to hold up as well as any other similar patio heater. If I find that it doesn't hold up that well over time I'll come back and update my review. So far though, I'm happy with my order.
