so much better than a robot vacuum by itself

  • IN LOVE
Style: V16 Piston Animal Submarine
In short, an upgrade for pet hair, carpets, and hard floors from my existing Dyson *I keep getting an error when uploading my vids, so I will try again later. I have been a huge Dyson fan over the years, from air purifiers to vacuums to all sorts of hair dryers. I have been using Dyson vacuums for as long as I can remember, and they were immensely useful when I lived in a carpeted apartment during college. These days, I mostly live in a hard floor place, but I still put rugs and carpets in a lot of areas, especially during colder weather. I also decided to foster furry friends again, so having a strong vacuum became even more important. With cats, I end up using so many sticky rollers, and I also rely on air purifiers because of my own sensitivities. Pet hair, litter dust, and little crumbs somehow show up everywhere, so I thought it was finally time to upgrade. The reason I decided to get another Dyson is also that the one I had been using was taken from the place I rented out. I had left it there, and when the renter moved out, the vacuum went with them. So I moved the Dyson I had at home to the rental place (mostly carpeted place where I used to live during college), and requested this Dyson V16 for myself. I honestly could not be happier. I already liked it even before receiving it because I knew it would be an upgrade from the Dyson I had been using with satisfaction, but actually using it made me appreciate the upgrade even more. The suction feels very strong as expected, and the fact that this model has up to 315AW of suction power and up to 70 minutes of runtime makes it feel much more practical for a whole-home cleaning session. The Hyperdymium 900W motor is freaking powerful, and it really helps with pet hair, dust, and debris stuck in rugs and corners. Oh, I am in love ~~ The anti-tangle cleaner head is one of my favorite parts. With my long, long hair that drives me crazy and foster cats, hair getting wrapped around the brush is one of the most annoying parts of vacuuming, so having a cleaner head designed to reduce tangles makes a huge difference. I also like that it can adjust for different floor types, because I go from hard floors to rugs and carpets constantly. The dust illumination feature is very interesting and useful because it shows the dust I would have missed otherwise !! Now, the Submarine wet roller head is another reason this feels like a real upgrade. I like that I can vacuum and also handle wet cleaning for hard floors, spills, and small messes without pulling out a separate mop. What a perfect vacuum for busy people !!!! For a home with pets, this is so helpful because little paw marks, litter dust, and random floor messes happen all the time. I also appreciate the larger compressing bin design. With furry friends, the bin fills up quickly (I've been using a separate vacuum I use for furry friends), so anything that helps hold more dust and hair before emptying is a plus. The whole vacuum feels like it was made for people who actually deal with long hair, dust, carpets, rugs, and mixed flooring every day, and that's me lol Of course, Dyson products are not cheap, but in my experience, they are one of the few household appliances that I actually use constantly and feel the value from (because they are also durable, surviving the clumsy me over the years). If this one lasts like my previous Dyson products, it will absolutely be worth it in terms of overall quality/longevity vs price. For me, especially with foster cats and mixed floor types, this has been a very satisfying upgrade. ... show more

  • One machine that does it all
Style: V16 Piston Animal Submarine
I ordered the Dyson V16 Piston Animal Submarine because I already owned both an older Dyson cordless vacuum and a separate Dyson wet and dry hard floor cleaner. The idea of replacing both machines with a single device was what convinced me to give this one a try, and so far it has done exactly what I was hoping it would do. The first thing I noticed is how powerful the suction is. I have used several Dyson cordless vacuums over the years, and this is easily the strongest one I have owned. It picks up everything from fine dust to larger debris, and I have been impressed by how well it handles pet hair. The anti-tangle design is a big improvement too. Hair that would normally wrap around a brush roll gets pulled directly into the bin instead. I also really like the variety of cleaner heads included. The illuminated heads are surprisingly useful because they reveal dust and debris that I would have completely missed otherwise. I find myself cleaning more thoroughly simply because I can actually see what is on the floor. The feature that sets this model apart for me is the Submarine wet-cleaning attachment. Being able to vacuum and then switch over to washing my hard floors using the same machine saves both storage space and time. It does a nice job removing everyday dirt, footprints, and small spills, and the boost mode has been useful for spots that need extra attention. Battery life has been excellent. I can vacuum and wash the floors throughout my entire house on a single charge, which is something I could not say about some cordless vacuums I have owned in the past. Not having to stop midway through cleaning to recharge makes a noticeable difference when tackling larger cleaning jobs. I also like the LCD screen and the MyDyson app integration. The screen provides real-time information about battery life and maintenance, while the app gives additional maintenance guidance, software updates, and product information. It is not something I use every day, but it is helpful to have everything in one place when I need it. The vacuum is not lightweight, especially when compared to some smaller cordless models, but that is the tradeoff for the added power and versatility. Since it has effectively replaced two separate cleaning machines in my house, I find that compromise worthwhile. In summary, this has been a significant upgrade from my older Dyson setup. The strong suction, anti-tangle performance, floor washing capability, long battery life, and useful app connectivity make it one of the most versatile cleaning tools I have used. For me, the biggest benefit is being able to replace both my cordless vacuum and my separate hard floor cleaner with a single machine that does both jobs very well. ... show more

  • Dyson V16 Piston Animal Submarine
Style: V16 Piston Animal Submarine
Smart App and Setup The assembly on this wet-and-dry stick vacuum takes a little figuring out, especially when dealing with its smart features. The machine has Bluetooth connectivity and pairs with the MyDyson app under the model SV53-AT. Interestingly, upon initial pairing, the app flags it as an "Unknown Machine," though it remains fully functional. Tapping into this menu opens an overview dashboard that tracks battery levels, power management metrics, and an active cleaning log. Clicking the gear icon in product settings allows you to register the vacuum and handle necessary firmware updates right away. The app includes a Task Detect slider bar that controls the vacuum's auto-suction sensitivity. This is turned on by default, causing the motor to dynamically scale its power based on the volume of debris it encounters. Suction and Floor Performance Once the battery is topped off and the firmware is updated, the raw performance of Auto mode is incredibly impressive. The suction is powerful enough to pull a shocking amount of deep-seated dirt out of rugs that have been freshly run through a washing machine. Surprisingly, for as incredibly powerful as this machine is, the motor noise level isn't actually that loud at all. However, the aggressive suction of Auto mode makes it incompatible with lightweight area rugs. When attempting to clean thin or loose rugs, the immense suction can pull the fabric into the head, causing the machine to detect a potential clog, instantly shut off power, and flash an error code on the handle's LCD panel. Shifting down into Eco Mode completely solves this problem, dropping the suction just enough to glide over lightweight textiles without swallowing them. Maneuverability and Battery Life The main All Floor Cones Sense cleaner head tracks well and handles effortlessly across transitioning floor surfaces. It moves smoothly from thick carpets to hardwood and rugs. This head also features a precisely angled green LED light built right into it. It illuminates the floor perfectly, revealing hidden dust and dirt you can't normally see so you don't miss a spot. Even though the full unit scales in at a heavy-duty 7.5 pounds, the weight is beautifully balanced when it's on the floor. Because the floor head maintains constant contact with the ground, you rarely have to actually lift it during extended floor sessions. When you do need to lift it, stripping the vacuum down to just the wand attachment drops the Animal down to a very comfortable 5 pounds, which makes it an easy, lightweight weight for overhead dusting. For standard household vacuuming, the battery efficiency is excellent. Running a mix of floor types took roughly 40 minutes, leaving a solid 30% of battery capacity to spare. Maintenance and Bin Emptying After a heavy cleaning session, the debris chamber packs in a massive amount of dust. Emptying the canister is exceptionally clean and simple: while holding it inside a trash receptacle, you push the release button forward toward the trigger, then slide the trigger down. This action smoothly scrapes down the internal mesh filter and ejects the compressed dirt without forcing you to reach in and pull out hair manually. Included Attachments The vacuum comes with a versatile selection of extra tooling right in the box: Cleaning Wand Attachment: Great for extending your reach to vacuum deep corners and high ceilings effortlessly. Furniture Head (Hair Screw Tool 2.0): Ideal for smaller upholstered surfaces. Hardfloor Head (Fluffy Optic): Gentle on hard floors but tough on dirt. (Note: I haven't had a chance to fully test this floor head out yet). Submarine Mop Performance The Submarine wet roller head handles wonderfully, maneuvering into tight spaces just as easily as the dry vacuum heads and cleaning hard floors beautifully. While plain water doesn't quite cut it for high-traffic areas like a kitchen floor, adding a small splash of compatible floor cleaner to the bottle dramatically improves the results. Unlike the rest of the machine, the Submarine head does not use any suction power to clean. Instead, the main vacuum motor bypasses suction entirely so it won’t draw water into the machine's electronics. The head relies purely on a motorized, highly absorbent microfiber roller that is continuously hydrated with clean water. As the roller spins to agitate and lift stains, a built-in mechanical squeegee plate continuously scrapes the dirty liquid and small debris off the roller and directs it straight into the waste tray. However, the actual user experience of the Submarine head is a mix of great performance and frustrating design choices: Cumbersome Maintenance: Assembling and deep-cleaning the head is a bit of a bottleneck. Sliding the two main compartments back together can take multiple tries because the roller, clean water bottle, and waste reservoir all have to align absolutely perfectly to snap shut. The Spill Flaw: Because the dirty water isn't held by suction and the internal waste reservoir is completely unsealed, it requires careful handling. If the vacuum tips over, the dirty water will instantly spill all over the floor. On the bright side, if an accidental spill happens, you don't need to grab a different tool, just turn the machine right back on and glide over the puddle. The roller mechanism will make quick work of it, cleaning the entire mess back up into the reservoir in less than a minute. It is a weird architectural choice to put both the fill bottle and an open waste tray right in the floor head itself instead of a self-contained tank system. While it easily outperforms a traditional manual mop, it isn't necessarily the ultimate hard floor machine on the market due to these maintenance quirks. Value and Summary At a staggering retail price, the Dyson V16 Piston Animal Submarine is a major financial investment. However, as a first-time Dyson user, I am thoroughly impressed and can clearly see exactly where all that money went. You can easily spot the premium quality, and advanced engineering features packed directly into the machine: the seamless app integration, the heavy-duty Animal performance, the smart auto-adapting brush speeds and suction power, the specialized cleaner heads, the hygienic waste bin, and the sheer mechanical efficiency of pulling that much power out of a small rechargeable battery. A portion of that premium price tag undoubtedly goes into their massive global marketing, as everyone knows the Dyson brand name even if they’ve never owned one of their products. But the actual tech inside backs it up. If you have the budget for it, the top-tier dry suction, smart automation, and versatile attachments make it an incredibly capable 2-in-1 system. ... show more

  • Powerful Suction with Capable Submarine 2.0 Wet Roller but Clunky App
Style: V16 Piston Animal Submarine
Unpacking is probably the biggest detriment. There are no glossy users manuals with illustrations. It's either a try it and figure it out, or look for information on the web (and there are plenty of fancy videos on the Dyson website that answer all the questions you don't have, but fails to answer any of the questions you do have). The URL code on the fancy screen prompts you to download Dyson's three and a half star rated app. That it's rated 3 1/2 stars is a miracle. It's clunky and obtuse, but it gets the job done. It's not necessarily straightforward. At first, it didn't want to pair with my vacuum, and then it didn't want to allow me to create an account. When it did finally connect it struggled to find my model, and to this day still says it doesn't know what type of device I've connected- it obviously knows it's a Dyson product or it would not connect in the first place. Once connected it wanted to do a firmware update, but it didn't tell me that, the app just froze, and as I started to exit out I saw the opportunity to update the firmware. That's just my experience with the app. Product review - the Dyson Submarine adds dedicated wet cleaning to the cordless platform via the Submarine 2.0 wet roller head. This motorized microfiber roller uses a 300 ml clean water tank and dispenses water onto the roller while a squeegee/extraction system pulls dirty water into a separate tank. It offers two hydration modes (standard Wet and Max hydration for tougher stains) and includes a self-cleaning function for the roller. All of this works surprisingly well! The machine delivers up to 70 minutes of runtime on a single charge in normal/Eco mode (significantly less in Boost or with the wet head attached). The 7-cell lithium-ion battery is user-swappable. Full recharge time is approximately 3.5–4.5 hours. Dyson provides a standard 2-year limited warranty. The unit maintains Dyson’s characteristic strong suction (315AW in Powerful mode) and anti-tangle performance while adding effective wet cleaning for hard floors and light spills. Objective Score: 4.7/5 (Excellent integration of wet cleaning technology, strong overall performance, and convenient swappable battery design; minor deduction for the relatively long recharge time and reduced runtime when wet cleaning is active.) ... show more

  • Powerful, feature-packed, but definitely has a learning curve
Style: V16 Piston Animal Submarine
This replaced a Dyson that's been faithfully serving me for about 15 years, and it's a substantial upgrade in both performance and technology. It's also considerably more complex than older cordless vacuums. One surprise was discovering that there's an app for the vacuum. It isn't just for troubleshooting or maintenance reminders, either. It also delivers firmware updates, which still feels a little strange for a vacuum cleaner. Performance has been excellent, but one thing to understand is that choosing the correct cleaning head matters. The included anti-tangle cone head works well on carpet and does a great job preventing hair from wrapping around the rollers. However, I found that for picking up loose hair, another cleaner head actually performed better. Once I started using the right attachment for the job, the cleaning results were outstanding. Battery life left me unimpressed - It's possible I had the suction up too high, which really drains the battery fast. It does charge in a reasonable amount of time, fortunately. One feature I absolutely love is how low-profile the cleaner heads are. They fit under my kitchen cabinets and other furniture that my previous vacuums simply couldn't reach without moving everything around. The laser dust illumination is also incredibly cool. It's one of those features that sounds like a gimmick until you use it. Then you realize just how much fine dust is actually on your hard floors. It's both fascinating and slightly horrifying at the same time. Overall, this is an impressive vacuum with excellent cleaning performance and a lot of thoughtful engineering. It does have a learning curve compared to older models, but once you become familiar with the different cleaner heads and features, it's a very capable machine that makes my old Dyson feel positively ancient. ... show more

  • Best vacuum on the planet, no question, minor design flaws
Style: V16 Piston Animal Submarine
What an incredible piece of machinery. I went way out on a limb to give a sophisticated household device a chance to seduce me, and it worked. I didn't know you could actually look forward to vacuuming, yet here we are. Mine arrived charged, and all I had to do was connect the extension and then the UV head, and it was go time. I found the more forgotten areas of the house for a test, and it blew my mind to see a forest of dirt in front of the head, and then see it magically crystal clear after one pass. With all of the included heads and the overall power of the unit, it truly is an all in one device for having a mix of hard and soft flooring. I have to knock one star down for a very specific reason. The unit attached to the dock via the battery. So, since I cannot place mine near an electrical source, I need to remove the battery in order to charge it. When I do this, I cannot hang the device up while the battery is detached, so it has to be placed somewhere temporarily while the battery is charging. Kind of a big oversight in my opinion and it's actually pretty annoying, especially if you can't let it rest near the dock and have to move it somewhere totally different. Another thing I'm going to point out is that the storage for the 2 additional attachments is not very well designed. There is no way to get them to look "orderly", they really need to be moved and twisted in order to make it work, and it's made even worse by them being so close to the wall when the dock is flush mounted. The spacing and depth could have easily been better considering how far out the main unit sticks from the dock. Huge miss. Also, the "charging station" is just a plastic housing that the wall wart charger cable gets snapped into. The main unit will be repeatedly dropped down onto a 3.5mm power adapter being held in place by thin plastic. Eventually the connector, the port on the unit, or the plastic is going to fail. I still think this is the best vacuum on the planet though in terms of performance and versatility, which is why I'm surprised about the dock issue. ... show more

  • Great job by Dyson!
Style: V16 Piston Animal Submarine
This Dyson V16 piston animal submarine cordless vacuum cleans incredibly well. I’ll start with the only con: there’s no hardware to attach the wall mount to the wall. That’s it. I haven’t run into issues while charging, I plug it in after use and it is ready to go the next time I need it. The battery lasts for all of my vacuuming and floor cleaning needs. The battery and suction level display are a very useful addition that is easy to read. The light illuminates so much dirt and dust that you didn’t even know existed on your floor. I also use it to make sure it all got sucked up. This vacuum also does a really good job on pet hair, both dog and cat. It hot our living room carpet back to looking brand new. Switching heads or detaching the head of the vacuum is incredibly easy with this vacuum, you don’t even have to bend down with this model. The dust canister holds large amounts, and the fact that you can compress it is such a handy feature. It also helps you completely empty the dust canister, my previous vacuum from a competitor leaves so much debris behind. Now for the wet floor cleaning feature, adding water and attaching was easy. We tested it on some dried ketchup and watermelon juice spills from kiddos. We sprayed all purpose cleaner and ran the submarine a few times over to get these stains cleaned up and the Dyson performed well. It will leave your floor fairly wet and will require some time to dry. Emptying the dirty water reservoir was easy, we did have some large chunks of things catch on the roller head but it should be rinsed clean after every use anyways and this was also easy to do. ... show more
