Top Amazon Reviews

  • awesome at half the price
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
We love purchasing on Amazon, because the reviews let us know what will meet our needs and work for us. Here is another case in point. We have looked at locally available mobility scooters, and there are many places to purchase scooters here where we live in South Florida. However, this Drive Medical scooter is half the price of the other major brand, and Drive Medical makes high quality, well-made scooters. The Amazon reviews convinced us to go ahead and buy it. My husband wanted a scooter so he could ride down to the shopping mall, which is about half a mile from our home, and the public library is about a mile away. There are sidewalks the whole way. At the highest speed, he is content. The steering is supposed to be less tight on a 4-wheel scooter versus a 3-wheel, but we wouldn't need more. The seat is very comfortable, and my husband is heavier. The weight limit is 300 lbs. The basket is larger than other scooters that we looked at. The leg room is ample, even though it looks small, it's really great. We kept the red accents, but it comes with a package of blue accents if you prefer that color. We left the garage door open, and the delivery truck put the scooter into the center of the garage. Assembly was easy. The directions and Owner's Manual are very well written and easy to understand. You can download the manual to save it electronically (click on the link "Warranty" above the description on Amazon, and you will get the latest Owner's Manual version.) So I went to Drive Medical online and tried to register the scooter for the warranty. The problem was that there are several numbers on the stickers on the scooter, and I couldn't tell which number was the actual serial number. Clue: the serial number is 12 digits long, it starts with a number, and the second digit is a letter. So, I called Customer Service. The people were very polite and answered right away. They said that I didn't need to worry; that Amazon automatically registered the Drive Medical scooter for us at the time of purchase. I asked them to explain the warranty, and they did. The scooter came partially charged, so my husband was able to take a short drive right away. OK, so then we charged it overnight, and my husband took it for a ride. It's supposed to go at least 9 miles, but it ran out of battery charge at .4 mile (I measured the distance with the car). We tried charging it for another 24 hours, and the same thing happened - it ran out of battery charge at under 1/2 mile. So I called Customer Service, explained what was happening, what the display lights looked like, etc., and they said they would take care of it. Two days later we received a new charging cord. I called Customer Service, and said, I thought we were supposed to be getting a new battery, and they said, just try it. We charged the scooter overnight with the new charger, and it works fine. I highly recommend this mobility scooter. It is easy to take apart and put in the back of our car, I can do it by myself, and I’m 65. It is silent when running. It is very comfortable. Really great. You can't beat this price. The Customer Service is wonderful and responsive. ... show more

  • STARTING MY 4TH YEAR-Still going strong!
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
I got this scooter 3 years and 10 days ago. It’s been in the trunk of whatever car I’m driving since. I’ve had the Lincoln MKZ for two years this week and would not leave the city limits without it. It’s better than a lifeboat and a lot easier to love: there is very little maintenance. About a month ago I got crunched in the MKZ, took out the whole right front quarter. I drove to the collision repair shop and parked the car, opened the trunk and got my scooter out, told the shop boss to call me when the car was ready and headed home. The trail was only about 5 miles and rough in places, but the traffic was okay and the trip seemed short. I wouldn’t trade my scooter for any other. The rest of my review that follows was written about two years ago and still stands today. Easy assembly and can be easily disassembled to take it anywhere. I hauled it in a Town Car for about a year, recently changed to a MKZ. There’s more room in the MKZ. We took it to Oregon last year, rode it over paved trails. The battery lasted as long as I needed it. I am very happy with it and not buying the three wheel version makes me even more happy with it, as there were times I believe the three wheel version would have dumped me. I especially like the double speed controls, as i’m able to smoothly travel very slow or turn the limiting knob and move along faster than my wife can walk if I dare. Especially great for shopping or visiting the VA. Both places have scooters for customers but more customers than scooters. I’m 83, and yes it’s a little heavy, but I have no trouble loading/unloading it. I’m able to walk only very short distances before the pain sets in, so I appreciate the mobility without having to haul it on a trailer. ... show more

  • READ !! one MAJOR assembly step was missing in the MANUAL !! Great scooter for travel !
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
I am 5 ft and 61 yrs old. I bought this for my hubby, who is 5'10 and 240 lbs. He loves it. It works very well for the intended use of being a travel scooter for occasional trips. I did my homework, and was very aware of how the unit assembles and disassembles, and am able to get all the parts in the car. Packaging was good. NOTE**** Manual left out an IMPORTANT instruction step ! Once you have the scooter all assembled , you have to UNLOCK the WHEELS ! Manual diagram shows the Unlock Knob but not HOW to make it unlock. SO on the rear of the scooter is the red lever for FREEWHEEL or DRIVE position. Put the lever UP into the Freewheel position and then go to the front of the scooter. At the base of the tiller on the front is the Unlock knob. PULL it OUT and then turn to unlock the wheels. It is hard to see but the knob is marked Lock and Unlock. This operates easily , is well made as a Travel scooter. This is not meant for heavy duty use, but it does everything it should as expected. The ride is solid and great on good surfaces, it maneuvers reasonably on rough areas, but not recommended for an extended period of time. Scooter is overall easy to use, is whisper quiet and being 4 wheels is very stable., seat is comfortable and has a lot of the features the very expensive scooters have. We are very pleased, and a whole new world of opportunity has opened up with this purchase. ... show more

  • Excellent Product/Worthless Owner's Manual
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
I am a very meticulous and orderly type of person. Before buying I thoroughly read ALL THE REVIEWS twice on Amazon. Then I felt I was ready to properly handle this product. Once I received it the assembly was easy but it took me 2 full days before I could get this thing to move at all. DON'T GET ME WRONG THIS SCOOTER IS PERFECT and I would give it 5 stars. However the owner's manual is worthless and is principally of no help on two important things: 1) Front wheels won't turn more than an inch or so ! It took me one day to solve this thanks to a third reading of all the amazon's reviews ! The manual is mute on this subject ! There is a front wheel lock at the bottom of the tiller and I tried to turn it right and left or push it in vain. Finally I pulled it and the wheels unlocked. Neither the knob nor the manual say that you have to PULL it in order to unlock the front wheels. 2) I was still unable to start the scooter on the 2nd day and had to go to a local Drive Medical supplier for help. There is a lever in the back of the scooter to lock or unlock the rear wheels. In order to have the scooter to move I always made sure the wheels were unlocked. That's logical you would not drive your car with the parking brake on, right ? WRONG! THIS SCOOTER WILL ONLY MOVE WITH THE REAR WHEELS LOCKED ON ! I don't consider myself stupid and I really felt frustrated! You would think that the maker of this product go out of its way to make the experience as unpleasant as possible. ... show more

  • Well worth it!
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
My husband and I had a cruise coming up and because of his balance issues (Parkinson's) we decided to see how much they cost and spent hours reviewing a variety of brands and models. We knew we wouldn't use it often, so went with a lower cost scooter in hopes it would meet our needs. It did - and more. We got the 4 wheels instead of the 3 because of the more stable turning - but paid a price in the size of the turning radius. Regardless it was wonderful on the cruise ship. It is small enough to fit through the cabin door and was easy to "drive" throughout the ship, into the dining rooms, and even could stay seated by pulling up and swiveling the seat to sit comfortably at the table for playing cards, talking, or even eating. The battery held as advertised, and it was easy to disassemble and reassemble as we could do it ourselves. Moving on and off the ship's gangways was also easy. In fact, because of the ease and the ability to strap a few small bags on the back of the seat, place a small carryon between my husband's legs, and a few necessities (boarding and disembarking documents) in the basket up front for easy access we decided I could roll off our medium size suitcase and we used the carry off disembarkation and were one of the first off the ship and in our car and on the way home before most guests were called to disembark. We were concerned there'd be a lack of legroom using the smaller 4-wheel model. However, my husband had no issue, and our son who just had major reconstructive knee surgery is able to use it with enough space at the "fender' over the wheel to prop his foot as his leg is in a brace that doesn't allow mobility at all. He has found it a lifesaver alternative to the crutches when going more than a short distance or leaving the house to go into the yard or away from his home to ours, doctor, etc. The battery remained fully charged over 4 weeks while not in use, and going a great distance prior to needing a recharge. We are glad we went with this scooter. ... show more

  • Lasted 4 months before contacts failed. Plus battery problems.
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
CONTACT PROBLEM: Most scooters have electrical plugs hanging on wires between battery and motor. The wires absorb any movement so the metal connection in the plug stays solid. But this scooter uses solidly mounted contacts on the battery side, which press against mounted metal plates on the removeable motor side to send power across, instead of plugs on wires. So as you ride over even small bumps the torsion between the two sections of the scooter causes the contacts to move slightly across the plates while conducting power. This causes tiny sparks between the two metal parts which eats away the metal. After only 4 months, enough metal was sparked away that electrical contact was lost and the scooter stopped. BATTERY PROBLEM: After three months with the scooter, 3 miles a day on level ground, charging it each night. The battery started going empty after a single 2.5-mile round trip, the problem getting worse each trip. I opened the battery pack and was surprised to see it says "Lead Acid", not even a "Deep Cycle" lead acid. Regular lead-acid batteries are damaged each time you use them more than 50% of their rated value before charging them again, while the "deep cycle" type of lead acid can be drained much further without damage. In my case, I replaced the two 12v batteries with one 24v lithium-ion electric-bike battery. Wrapped in a towel, it fits snuggly in one side of the scooter's battery case. It costs a bit more than Lead Acid, but I'd have been happy to pay a little more for the scooter and have a battery expected to last 5 years. The advantages of lithium-ion over lead-acid are (1) You can use ALL the power in the battery, repeatedly, without any damage. (2) The voltage stays up at 24v until the battery is nearly empty, instead of running down slowly like lead-acid batteries do. (3) It is small and lightweight. The company should invested in long-lasting batteries for the happiness of all their scooter owners. I see the the pair of lead acid batteries on Amazon for $50, and the li-ion battery I bought for $150. It's well worth the $100.00 difference! ... show more

  • Usable by anyone, of any age
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
So far, I am using this rig strictly indoors. However, I see no reason it could not be used outdoors. It is ruggedly constructed and very stable. The great turning radius allows easy use indoors without needing extra wide halls or doors. It is very forgiving when you do hit something – like baseboard or the inside of a doorway. Everything that “leads” is made of slightly soft plastic which bends rather than breaking. I am 6 foot 4 and weigh 220 lbs. While the unit does not have the legroom of the family sedan, it is ample, if slightly cramped. For example, with a cast on my right leg, getting the cast around the steering column to exit the “vehicle” on the left is a little difficult, but do-able. The obvious solution is to pull up with the right side facing where you need to get off. The battery appears to hold up well. I am in my fifth week of using the thing and have re-charged only three times. For sure once, and possibly twice, recharging was done before the audible warning to recharge went off. It is easy to use and straight forward enough for anyone. The grand-kids love it and someone who is elderly and cautious would find it easy to use. There is a rheostat to control top speed and a hand lever to control forward and back within the range set by the rheostat. Set at its lowest and slowest setting, even the most cautious person would feel safe. Cranking it up to 1/3 speed makes it challenging to navigate inside, but lots of fun. Somewhat the feel of a go-kart. Like so many products, the “manual” is next to useless. It provides no real guidelines for recharging, only platitudes such as “many factors go into determining how far you can go between charges.” Tell me something I did not already know. The one glowing miss in the instructions is telling you who to unlock the front wheels. The unit comes with them locked. There is a knob on the front of the steering column which has to be pulled out, then turned to unlock the front wheels. When it arrives, completely dissemble the unit before taking it out of the box. That will make it much lighter to lift. The rear wheel/motor assembly is probably the heaviest of the four main components, and the easiest to remove and re-install. Based on my experience, I would not hesitate recommending this product to almost anyone. ... show more

  • Changed my life for the better
Style: Scout LT Color: Red/Blue
This scooter has changed my life. It's great quality. I love all of the materials. It's easy to assemble and light when it's in pieces. The battery lasts long. I used it in universal studios for 4 days and the battery had about 1/3rd power left by the end of long days. I charged it every night. It rained and I put a poncho over myself and it covered the scooter too. I worked great. I just avoided deep puddles and I was fine. I use it to go shopping and drive around my house when my legs hurt. I love it so much I want to buy one for my mom. She uses it too and it is SO helpful for her. She has a bad knee. It's a quiet motor. Update: After 4 years, the motor hums and the battery doesn't last as long. It's still a good scooter and I painted my blue accents light pink. I will be ordering a new battery for my upcoming trip to Disney but it really isn't necessary. I just like to be safe. People are asking if it comes with 1 or 2 batteries. It is technically 2 batteries in one shell case. For all intends and purposes, it's "1" battery. There is no back up. I just bought an after market battery and swapped it out and kept the original shell case bc my battery life was lower than I am comfortable with. ... show more
