  • The Samsung SSD T1 Portable 250GB is an excellent product
The Samsung SSD T1 Portable 250GB is an excellent product, not cheap, but not too expensive, I would perhaps have liked to opt for the 500GB, but the cost I would not allow, however I am fully convinced that it was an excellent purchase, since this device is characterized by multiple aspects. The first mobility is designed to be compact and lightweight allows us to carry it to wherever and although some may not like, I do charm out of plastic and making it extremely lightweight (I know, some will say for the price it would be best an aluminum body, like her sister T3, I on the contrary think that plastic requires less care, especially if it falls to the floor or if or if shares space with car keys, and the T1 will not suffer from scratches and chipped) The second is its design is compact, very compact, fits in any pocket, and design made on the surface laser is hypnotic, touch me seems fine, perhaps the only thing he had asked Samsung is a color palette more espacious. Thirdly, connectivity, although this formatted by default in exFAT, works with Windows, MacOS X and Linux, so we will not have connectivity problems, also has the USB 3.0 standard which results in a copy speed excellent , here it I have to complain because the cable which is very small and has later than early positions as incomodad in which we need to put this cable log. Finally something worth noting is its encryption software, a plus (which however will lose support Linux operating system officially unsupported) simply remain encrypted and therefore our files safe voyeurs or worse offenders. For this the Samsung T1 SSD is an excellent buy. ... show more

  • Best Portable Device Ever!!
It says for it self. Its very very light didn't know anything can be inside of the plastic shell, just thought it was a very expensive hollow plastic shell and it holds true to the speeds given. Tested this on my 2013 DIY desktop and my Surface Pro 3 and the speeds were crazy, I put a copy of Louis CK new show (3.58 GB) and in 10 seconds it was already in the device and it only took 12 seconds to put it on my surface pro 3. Since the video was a large file I also put in 2 smaller files (~500MB) and it took on avg. 12-15 secs on both devices as with smaller files the speed decreases but with usb 3.0 and a ssd. I think it did alright or more than decent since each device has its limitations regardless whether they're brand new or a few years old and I love samsung products for pcs and now for potability this is a must have, like for large file uploads or a portable backup for your computer. Pros: High Speeds -Need to have USB 3.0 or connect to one Nice value for price Short Cable is good if you like the distance Very light weight -The box that it came in is heavier than ~6 of these T1's - Also the box is thicker due to the doc it came with and the safety of the cable Cons: Cable is short so go get a longer one -I suggest StarTech B00KTKTBLU for price keeping and length of cable Since its new when you register it must be on or after Feb. 1 2015 and not before (unless you purchase it sometime this month) -Also no product support for awhile since samsung is probably doing it at the moment Also if you have norton 360 it finds the app as a [SONAR.Heuristic.120] and it won't run properly so I advise if you currently have norton 360 wait until a fix comes in (check the site for the app version change) for the miss hap or disable sonar until the app is installed. ... show more

Capacity: 1 TB
I am using this as a Time Machine for my iMac, and the Samsung T1 Portable USB3.0 External SSD is brilliant! Previously I was using a Thunderbolt Lacie Little Big 2TB external non SSD hard drive, which is really fast; but the fan was really ANNOYING. Yes the Samsung T1 Portable USB3.0 External SSD is about 25% slower than the Lacie, but the Samsung is SILENT. I run Parallels on my computer and thus Time Machine does 68 Gig back ups every hour, and it only takes about 6 or so minutes each time with the T1 Samsung, and totally SILENT. Easy to use. No noise. Fast. Reliable so far. Really small and really good looking. The indicator light that flashes blue, red etc is perfect. Noticeable but discreet. Well done Samsung! Really looking forward to a 2TB External USB SSD drive, but at a better price. ... show more

  • Don't buy if 10.11.3 mac or higher (edited)
Capacity: 1 TB
Not currently compatible with Mac 10.11.3 or 11.4 beta because of a security issue. They told me they are working on a fix but Macs will not even recognize the drive until this is patched. Edit: After a couple months of use I really do like the drive itself. It is small, fast and reliable. Just wish it didn't have the initialization process that it did. *** update. I used this drive (and very carefully in a padded case) along with a Samsung T3 1Tb drive that I purchased later for on-the-go audio/photo/video editing. On the T3, the drive came with a cable that wasn't USB 3.0 compatible. I had to purchase a cable that was in order to get the correct speeds and not just 2.0 speeds. I realize this is a review for the T1, but I believe the info is relevant as you'll see below. - After a year or so of usage, The T3 would start to intermittently disconnect and then reconnect. When I used the T1, speeds were the same I swapped cables (many times - in fact, wasted money purchasing 3-4 cables and some of the high grade, so another $100+ tossed at these drives - and the cable that came with this one did become defective within a couple months, despite using with great care) but the T3 continued to disconnect and T1 was slower than it should have been. So when working with an audio or video project on either drive, it was detrimental when it disconnected or lagged (especially if using it for music performance on stage - when it disconnects I had to close the program, make sure the drive mounted correctly, reopen the program which had to load all its plugins). So there were times when performing live that all of a sudden what I was playing (loops, tracks, keys, click, etc) would just stop and it'd be a couple minutes before I could jump back in. - Then about 4-5 months ago, BOTH failed completely. Dead in the water. The LED lit up. I connected it to multiple computers and it'd light up but would not mount and I have a bunch of hard-drive troubleshooting programs. The T3 would not mount to any computer with any cables, plugged directly into every USB port (no hub) of 5-6 computers with different OS's. The T1 strangely would mount to a SINGLE computer. I wiped it many times, reformatted to different file types but it would not connect to anything but my iMac. Having to get them repaired - you HAVE to call. A specific department, despite their 24/7 support with chat, phone or email. When I finally got a hold of them told me they'd send me an email with a return label. That did not come. I called again and they told me they'd send it again - I wanted him to wait on the phone to make sure I got it. After 10 minutes or so of him sending it over and over to the wrong email address, I finally got it. It was quite a bit of information needed, but I submitted it. About a week later, I had to follow up again because they did not reply and then had to resubmit. It's been two weeks for the T3 drive and their website has a link to click "view repair status" which just takes you back to their main repair support page. The T1 I just got back and I still have it sealed because it's the same drive (not replaced) and the work order merely says "firmware updated." That's it. And there's no link for a firmware update available on their website, which would seem like a thing they'd want me to troubleshoot before sending in if that'd fix it, or at least make that available to the public - but I highly doubt that is the issue. I will be selling this drive sealed as well as the T3 if/when it comes in. Now that it's been a week and a half says the repair is complete for the T3, no tracking has been sent or any information, support tells me I have to call their direct line specifically to get any information. Since both died (over $800 spent on both drives, cases for them, extra cables to test out and about 10 hours of troubleshooting at the least), I decided to buy a $100 1TB LaCie SSD drive that actually works at a quarter of the price. And the kicker is, that it shows that on the new T3 replacement drive is being sent... but the warranty is not extended. Same with the T1. So if either drive fails (even the new T3 they are supposedly going to send) in few months, I'm stuck with them. These drives are touted as fast, light and reliable. They have proven otherwise and I'm glad I backup all my data regularly or I'd have lost some very important video footage and audio recording that was just created before both drives went toast. And no - no water damage, mistreatment, drops, electrical issues, etc. ... show more

  • Great drive. Stupid software. Great drive. Stupid software.
Just got this today, so I haven't had a ton of time to really put it through its paces. I did want to comment on a few things, though. First, people are rightly angered by the requisite Samsung software. Because of the encryption features offered by the drive it has to be "activated" before using it, which requires running a little Samsung app included on the drive. From there, you can disable password protection entirely, if you prefer, which will make the drive unencrypted and usable on virtually any device that supports USB. (If you choose to leave the encryption on and set a password, then you will have to use the Samsung software to unencrypt it each time you plug it in, and therefore you can only use the drive on a PC running Windows 7+ or a Mac). None of that is particularly annoying, in itself. It's a one-time procedure and takes mere seconds. However, running the app installs a daemon process on your computer that will start at boot and run all the time. Granted, this doesn't use any CPU unless the drive is plugged in and only sits on a measly 2.4 MB of RAM, but I'm a background process purist: if it doesn't need to run, it should not be there. The reason for this process is the encryption, should you choose to use it. However, then, Samsung should disable this daemon if you disable password protection. I was able to remove it, but I also know quite a bit about computers. For a lay-person, it would likely be very confusing if not impossible to figure out how to remove it, so I'll detail the steps here for Windows PCs, since that's what I'm using. I believe another reviewer details Mac removal procedures already. 1. Open Task Manager, either using CTRL+ALT+DEL or by right-clicking the taskbar. 2. Find the "Samsung T1 SSD Daemon" process in the list (easier if you sort by process name) and kill it. 3. Open Windows/File Explorer and navigate to C:\ProgramData. 4. Delete the "Samsung Apps" directory you find there. Because of this, I docked a star. It seems like a great drive otherwise, but Samsung really messed up with the encryption feature. First, the drive should come as a standard drive (no "activation" necessary) and just include software to enable encryption if you want it. Second, if you put anything on a user's PC, you should provide a clearly marked uninstaller to undo that. Samsung failure to do so in this case is a hugely idiotic move. That said, this does seem to be a good drive. It looks nice, feels nice. It's super small and matches my Razer Blade really well. Also, as you can see from the included screenshots, it holds its own against my internal SSD (also manufactured by Samsung) pretty well for an external drive. The first image is the CrystalMark benchmark for this drive. The second is the benchmark for my internal SSD. As you can see, they're really close for the most part, which the major differences boiling down to mostly the read-write optimization ratio between the two. In particular my internal SSD seems to be optimized mostly for reads, with writes coming in rather low for an SSD. However, an internal drive is going to spend far more of its life reading than writing, so that makes sense. The Samsung T1 seems to have a more balanced optimization. ... show more

  • Fast little demon
Capacity: 500 GB
I have a Macbook Air, and for additional storage for my videos and photos, I had been using external hard drives. Well, I had one broke down, just as a project is due. Good thing I managed to copy the contents to another drive (that started to act up also). I have sworn off from buying laptops with spinning platter inside, as manufacturers don't seem to be bothered about reliability, despite people storing important memories and data on their error-prone spinning platter. External hard-drives are no different. Manufacturers are making drives in terabytes, so more of your data can go poof. Oh, of course they are selling you expensive data recovery services. How convenient. Thus my search of an external SSD drive. Yes, SSD are more expensive, but if you consider the cost of data recovery (in addition to time and stress), the price difference becomes almost negligible. I picked this Samsung because Samsung itself is a chip maker, and their SSDs are quite well known. I was expecting a slimmer but similar sized drive as regular external hard drives. But what I got was this tiny thing, smaller than a credit card. And the speed, boy. I have a Mac with USB3, and transferring gigabytes of videos was a quick breeze. It's quite mind boggling if you have not experienced it. And that's about it. I've been using it for my media data drive. One funny thing is you need to install Samsung's software first to allow the OS to recognize the drive. This is true for both OS X and Windows. It's a one time only though, and it gave you the option to set up a password. Once that step is done, it's just like a regular external drive. ... show more

  • Great Drive BUT read this first to understand requirements
This is a really awesome drive. I primarily use a Mac and was looking to buy a external Thunderbolt SSD drive but learned that it is pretty much a waste of extra money because current hard drives in these Thunderbolt enclosures are unable to utilize the throughput thunderbolt offers. The weakest link is either the machines internal drive or the external drive itself, not the connection. This brings me to another point, when you buy an external SSD it is important to understand that there are several factors that determine speed. The machines internal drive, the connection to the external drive and the external drive itself are the three important factors. In order to reach the speeds advertised your internal hard drive needs to be as fast or faster than the external one in order to read and write data to itself so make sure you have an SSD internally as well. The connection also needs to be fast so make sure your machine uses USB3 AND is running windows 8 or above (See note below). If you have all of these in place, then you will see around the advertised speeds. ***IMPORTANT NOTES*** -Windows 7 WILL NOT TRANSFER AT THE ADVERTISED SPEEDS - You need windows 8 or 10 because it comes with the driver that allows USB3 to operate ate higher transfer rates with this external drive. Windows 7 does not come with this driver and I was unable to find it anywhere online. Samsung does not give you one. Samsung does however give you the driver for Mac OSX. -When transferring to and or from your internal hard drive, make sure it is an SSD if you want the full advertised speed. Spinning rust drives are not capable of keeping up with external drive. -If you setup this drive on a windows machine first then use it on the mac, you need to go to the samsung website and download the Mac software if you want the full advertised transfer speeds. By setting it up on a windows machine first, it deletes the files it comes with. Stupid maybe but don't be lazy and spend a few minutes going to the samsung website. Many people have complained about having to run the program before you are able to use all of the space on this HD. Don't listen to these babies. It takes 1-2min and is helpful to some people because it allows you to name the drive and encrypt it. It is also important for Mac users because it allows you to install the driver needed for the full transfer rate. ... show more

  • Fast and small, but requires its driver, cable might be faulty
Fast, small, light as a feather. Got my 250 GB for only $100. My only gripe with this is that without the driver, it is risky to use in other computers as some sectors cannot be read or are partially read, and saving to the drive can corrupt a completely different sector. Once I installed the driver to both my desktop and laptop I was good to go. EDIT: Shortly after writing this review, my T1 slowed down to USB 2.0 speeds. The corruptions came back, and they were in full force. One time Windows 10 flat-out told me my T1 malfunctioned. After much frustration, I tried my T1 on a different USB 3.0 cord and was glad to know that it wasn't defective, as it went back to 430 MB/s and the corruptions slowed back down. You might want to buy a USB 3.0 cord with this as the cord that comes with the drive is a little bizarre. This is, however, the first time Samsung is producing portable SSDs, but more or less, this design issue should not be overlooked. ... show more
