  • Works correctly, but struggles with maintaining write speeds
I originally wrote this review for five stars, but after using it for a few weeks I have to decrease it to three stars. I've been struggling to find an external SSD that works correctly with macOS Catalina. Some of the others have awful reviews, poor performance, and in general don't work correctly. Crucial is the first one that works. First, the read speeds are as advertised (and twice as fast as SanDisk or Ravpower portable SSDs). I needed a solid state external drive on APFS for Final Cut, and this drive works tremendously for that task. Formatting is a breeze since this doesn't come with bloated unremovable partitions like Ravpower, so the process was painless. The cons are that the write speeds suffer greatly due to a lack of DRAM, which would assist with maintaining drive speeds for large copy jobs. Because of this, the write speeds often plummet to difficult to use speeds if copying large files. To copy 180gb would take about an hour at the speeds I am seeing on my drive. To be honest almost all the drives available aren't up to par, and this is a market that is severely lacking in suitable devices. This one does the job if you don't need to rely on it for copying large amounts of files to the drive quickly. If you're using it to read files, it's perfectly adequate. ... show more

  • The perfect jukebox
With newer cars assuming owners will use their phones for music via OTA subscription(s), I still needed a means to store and listen to my CD library. Already ripped to a lossless format (.flac), this portable SSD is the optimal solution and allows me to move it between cars. It gets a little warm in use but always cool enough to touch with your hand so no worries. ... show more

  • Fast, but gets hot
Not planning on doing anything intense other than cloning my MacBook Pro's SSD, so speeds are very good. The cable includes a USB A to C converter for older systems. Only complaint so far is that under heavy use, it gets quite hot. Not searing hot, but I wouldn't put this on your lap. Also, the USB A to C converter is keyed specifically to the cable. Essentially, you can't use it with any other USB cables unless you physically modify it. ... show more

  • Its alright.
I've been using mine as a backup drive for my MacBook, and simply put it's not that great. First, as you may have read from other reviews that cache is really what it's made out to be. This drive would be great if all you're doing is transferring small to medium-sized files but for larger files such as backups, this one should be avoided. It has good speeds at first but then it begins to drop and not only that but it also becomes unbearably hot. ... show more

  • Very unimpressed. Avgerage speed less than my old usb 3.0 drive
I have a toshiba canvio (or some such name) its a 2tb drive a little smaller than my hand print. I've had it for years. I get an average of 125mbs reads and writes. Sometimes it goes a little over, sometimes it transfers a little less. But 90% of the time, I know I'll move my data from my laptop to my server at 125mbs. The drive started acting a bit funky last week and yesterday I saw a amazon deal on this drive so I pulled the trigger so to speak. Here is my experience: Using the supplied cable I was writing to the new drive (from my laptop) at less than 40mbs. I tried all 3 usb 3.0 ports. It was always under 40mbs. I was about to wrap the drive back up, but decided to try a usb c to usb A cord that I had for my cell phone. Like magic the write speed went up to 280mbs. I wasnt thrilled since I had read some people getting 400+mbs on a usb 3.0 port, but it was twice as fast as the drive I wanted to replace so I was cautiously hopeful. I transferred 100gb of data, the data ranged from 100mb files to a few dozen 1 to 10 gb files. It made it about 75% of the way through the transfer then all of a sudden throttled down to 40 -48mbs for the next 7 minutes while it transferred the remaining data. Was time saved as compared to the drive that I was replacing. Maybe....... yet again, maybe isnt really good enough. My last hope was in writing the data from the new drive to my $7000 home server. The server has a slew of NVME drives an MSI z490 Godlike motherboard and an i9-10900k processor. It has native thunderbolt ports and various other high speed usb ports. I plugged this drive in, it was immediately recognized and I copied about 30gb from my nvme drive to this drive. I plugged into the thunderbolt port (with the included cable) and MAGIC, 800mbs transfer....... for about 3 seconds. Then it dropped to a couple hundred fluctuating and then.... you guessed it. 40mbs. I'm pretty sure I have ADD, so after watching the paint dry for about 60 seconds I stopped the transfer. On with the next test, move the data from this external drive TO my server. Speeds started at around 800mbs, then after about 20 seconds dropped to 400 mbs then after a minute it sat at around 280mbs. I was able to get a steady transfer for the remainder of my data at about 280mbs. Why is this happening? Well I know when my CPU runs through a benchmark overclocking test that when it gets too hot it throttles the speed down. Is that whats happening here? I know I could probably stick this drive in an MRE and it would be ready to eat in about 3 minutes. I honestly dont care. Other people seem to like their drive. Maybe mines defective. What I do know is that the one I received did not live up to expectations and is going back to amazon. ... show more
