I was originally happy with the sun shade, but after two months the circular piece to the cordless crank kit broke, rendering the retracting feature useless. In accordance with the Coolaroo instructions and website, I first e-mailed their customer service...telling them my order number, date of purchase, etc. and asked what they recommended as a solution. One week went by without a response (yes, I checked my junk folder). Next, I called their "customer service" phone number during business hours only to be sent to voicemail. Instead I called back later that afternoon (still during business hours). I was again forwarded to a voicemail where they said to leave a message and someone would return my call. This time I left a detailed message about the issue and asked them to return my call so I could either get a replacement part or work out another solution. Just as my e-mail was never returned, my phone call was never returned either. After another week of no response and growing aggravation at Coolaroo's blatant disrespect of its customers, I called Amazon for their recommendation. Amazon customer service was extremely helpful and sent me a replacement (entire new sun shade) the very next day at no extra cost. Amazon retained a loyal customer and earned my respect. Based on this experience, however, I have no confidence that Coolaroo will change their pattern of poor customer service. ... show more

After a year and a half one of the "eyes" that you hook the rod to so you can wind it up broke. Since the paperwork that came with the shades say it had a 2-yr warranty I called the manufacturer and now they are trying to tell me it's only 1 year parts and 3 years or something for the fabric. My warranty says "this product" and does not split anything apart. So now I'm going through process of having to scan everything in and send it to them. Literally over a $10 replacement part (my cost mind you) they want to try to change warranty policies on me after I bought something under a previous policy? Will not buy anything from them again. My wife and I think that this Coolaroo sun shade has turned an OK outdoor space into something much better. We like the way that it keeps the deck cooler in the bright afternoon sunshine. I understand now the beauty of being able to see through the shade while giving a little more privacy. We are very happy with this purchase. Now in a matter of sharing what I learned from the experience. We also installed a 10 foot long Coolaroo shade at the same time. I have Parkinson's so the effort required to install certainly exceeded the 20 minutes that the instructions suggested =8^). What I figured out seemed to help in handling both of these shades. When first taken out of the shipping container, take several strips of hook and loop fasteners (Velcro) and tightly snug them down to make the shades easier to handle until it is time to unfurl them. It also helps with the slightly annoying problem of having the fabric sliding while you are hanging off the deck trying to mount it using the brackets hung under the roof eves. I used 4 for the 10 footer and two for the 4 footer. These fastener straps would also come in handy when taking the shade down, if you elected to, for winter as well. I also put an extra screw into both brackets for the 10 footer. I thought that only placing two in each bracket was not enough for that long span of 10 feet. The shade itself only weighs 11 pounds, but I was worried about the sudden wind gusts and Colorado weather blowing on the shade. It was easy to drill a third hole in between the two slots provided by the manufacturer. After making all the necessary adjustments to the shade I then placed this third screw to give more support and also to lock each bracket down. Hope this helps someone. ... show more

I recently rebuilt our deck and added a pergola. We don't have any large trees close to our deck, so I purchased 2 of these shades to block the sun and add privacy. So far, I'm very impressed. They were easy to install and the quality is much better than anything I found at the typical home improvement stores. These shades are great. We have bought two of them, both 8x6. They hold up well and work great. Love them! Just so you know, Amazon mixed up the colors for this shade. The Almond is the darker brown, and the Sesame is more like a yellow. When you click on these color choices for the Amazon listing, it indicates the reverse. We have one in Almond (bought last season), and one in Sesame (bought this season). They are in different decks. I wish I"d bought the Almond again, it's a prettier color than the Sesame. The Sesame is too yellow for me, and the sun is brighter and more glaring through it. The Almond has less glare, although they are described as having the same SPF factor. The Almond is like a darker beige, but not too dark. It's perfect. ... show more

I almost had $2500 metal-rolling shutters installed on my east-facing bedroom window because the room heated up like an oven when the sun came up in the morning. I decided to try this first before investing that kind of cash and I'm so glad I did. They installed easily (although definitely a 2 person job) and are taking a pounding in the Vegas-sun and still holding up great. They cut down on the room temperature by at LEAST 5-7 degrees, sometimes more. I bought another shade for my office window (west facing) and it helps tremendously.
