My house is almost perfectly oriented to the cardinal points which means my front porch gets a near perfect afternoon/evening blast of sun. During those hours in the summer my porch is not a pleasant place to be. This shade was easy to install and so worth it. When I crank it up, it's well hidden. Included are two bungy loops to anchor the shade to your porch railing etc. Without these, my shade would get destroyed quickly due to the wind we get. I installed them so when I hook the bungies to the anchors, everything is a little loose for ease in connection. I then retract the shade a bt on the roller to make everything tight. I've only had the shade up for one summer and am unlikely to use it during the winter. I expect it to last some time with my use. If I can find them, I am considering purchasing different sizes for the rest of my porch. ... show more

Years ago, I installed two, six-foot Coolaroo shades over the windows on the back bedroom. I put up a ten-foot, and an eight-foot Coolaroo shade on one side of the 'catio'. Being on the Salish Sea, we occasionally have (literal) gale-force winds; not to mention rain and snow. The shades have withstood the weather very well, and have kept the back bedrooms cooler. The shades in the catio greatly reduce the glare from the white single-wide on the lot next door. We've been so pleased with this product that late last week I put two, four-foot Coolaroo shades over the windows of the front bedroom. They have helped reduce the temperature in the front bedroom against the hot sunlight up here at the 49th Parallel. Today we received a six-foot shade for the front room window. I was able to install all of the shades without help; even the ten-foot one. Installation is very simple. My only complaint is that there isn't enough room on the crank bracket to use my drill. With the latest installation, I found that it's easier to mark the hole locations, and drill the holes without the brackets. Coolaroo shades are easy to install, stand up to Pacific Northwest weather, cool our rooms, reduce sun glare and wind buffeting, and we can still see through them. The units are packaged in four-foot by four-inch cardboard tubes, which should be more than adequate for shipping. I ordered two units, and each one was shipped in separate cardboard boxes with packing paper. I did find the packing to be excessive and wasteful. At least I was able to repurpose most of one tube for something else. Better to just put a label on the tubes and ship them that way. The six-foot blind I also ordered was shipped without any packaging at all (not even a tube). Much better! ... show more

I was a little skeptical of getting the 10' one because of user reviews about it being bent, but I decided to try it anyway. It was super easy to put up but I suggest an extra pair of hands to hold it. It works great and I love the ties at the bottom. I have a west-facing outdoor patio. It and the house get grilled by the afternoon sun. In the past, I've installed three 8' bamboo roller shades across the patio. The bamboo shades have always worked well, provided good shade, and were easy to roll up (though the cords were a bit unsightly). I leave the shades up year-round and they remain in good shape for about 5 yrs, then deterioration begins to show. This year, I purchased a terra cotta Coolaroo rectangular shade sail to go across the top of the patio and decided to purchase matching roller shades. Unfortunately, because the mounting brackets are on the sides of these shades, the usual three 8' shades wouldn't fit. I had to go with two 8' and one 6' (there are no 7' shades). I did the installation myself and didn't find it to be difficult, but it did take time to measure carefully and consider placement, as well as to level the brackets. There are no extra screws; if you lose one, as I did, you'll have to find a replacement screw. Also, because of the side brackets, there will be a minimum 2" or more gap between shades. My previous bamboo shades mounted from the top and there were no gaps. From a style standpoint, they look very good. The terra cotta color is really nice. There are no cords hanging around. From a sun-blocking standpoint, they provide medium-filtered shade, at best. The bamboo shades were much better at blocking the sun. From a privacy standpoint, there is some privacy if there is no light on in the patio area; however, if you are sitting on the patio with a light on, you are easy to see from the other side of the shade. The bamboo shades provided better privacy. They roll up and down easily. The roller stick is removable and I ended up putting it in my pantry when not using it. I particularly like the tie-downs at the bottom of the shade. I don't want to constantly raise or lower the shades depending on the weather. I want to set them and forget them, which is what I've done. I can't speak for the longevity of these shades as I've only had them up for two months. If you are looking for something stylish and chic with medium sun-filtering, these are a good option. If you are interested in something closer to sun-blocking or a higher degree of privacy, these are not the best option for those purposes. ... show more
