  • UPDATED THOROUGH REVIEW OF MEDIUM COOL BROWN, 5C
Color: 5C Medium Cool Brown Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
Skip to 2nd paragraph if you want to review of the product. My edit/update is mostly about the allergic experience that I attributed to the salon semi-permanent color. On application and while "marinating", my head itched. After a few sessions with the salon color, the itching was CONSTANT. I blamed it on the salon color, and kept using my new favorite shampoo, conditioner, etc. It took awhile before I realized that it was the OLAPLEX PRODUCT LINE THAT WAS CAUSING THE REACTION. By the time I realized it, I had lost a lot of hair! I'm just spreading the word about that product line. There's a lawsuit, and they are refunding customers' money, but that's small consolation when your hair is ruined. This review is for the Medium Cool Brown, 5C. First: In my youth, I had very dark brown hair with coppery highlights in the sun. My hairdresser says that my hair is now 30-40% gray. (It's not really gray; it's white.) For several years, I've gone to the salon every 4 weeks. After 2 weeks, I'd touch up with Clairol Permanent Root Touch-Up, 4A Dark Ash Brown. It worked fine, but I hated the obvious new growth of white hair. So, about 6 months ago, my stylist and I decided to switch to a semi-permanent color, both in the salon and for my 2-week touch-ups. (The semi-permanent products I tried at home were Clairol Root Touch-Up Semi-Permanent Hair Color for Gray Coverage, 2A, Rich Dark Brown. The other was Clairol Permanent Root Touch-Up, 4A, Dark Ash Brown. The biggest difference between the two products is the application method. You can look at the product pages to see what I mean. Neither one lasted very long; my hair looked dull and washed out within a week.) Every time I got the salon dye job, my head itched for a couple of days. (I didn't have the same problem with the at-home touch-ups.) But last month, my head, neck and shoulders itched HORRIBLY for almost 2 weeks. Took a lot of Benadryl and swore off the semi-permanent salon procedure. (As mentioned in 1st paragraph, all this was caused by the Olaplex products I had been using.) NOW, FOR THIS PRODUCT REVIEW: I did a skin test 48 hours before coloring my hair. (I never bothered doing this before, but the allergic reaction to the salon stuff made me wary.) I mixed a tiny bit of the color and developer, and used a Q-tip to put a dot on my inner arm. Unlike other at-home dyes I've used, this stuff mixed up white/translucent. Don't worry. It turns color quickly. (Oops. Then I covered it with a band-aid because I'd made a dark brown splotch on my arm!) Buy a box of latex gloves! The gloves that come with these products are horrible, and for this particular product, I used 3 pairs. The 1st pair was for the initial root application. (The directions say to wait 20 min. from when you *begin* to apply the product.) The 2nd pair was for the next step, when I applied the color to comb through my shoulder-length hair. That step may not be necessary for future dye jobs, but this was a new color, and it claimed to have 3 different shades, so I wanted to apply all over. The 3rd pair of gloves was for rinsing and washing out the dye. The total time was 25 min., though in the past I've waited longer for better coverage. For the sake of research, I wanted to follow the instructions exactly. I used the conditioner that is supplied in the box. In theory, this MEDIUM cool brown is lighter than the touch-up products I've used in the past, both permanent and semi-permanent, all by Clairol. If we ever have a sunny day, I'll find out if the color is significantly different from the various "dark brown" dyes. For now, right after doing my hair, it looks really good. When I update this review, I'll let you know if the supposed 3-color highlights/lowlights thing is noticeable. Definitely an improvement over the semi-permanent products. I'll let you know what happens to the towels after a few washes. (I try not to wash every day, just condition, but it's summer and if I bike or swim, I have to shampoo.) MORE UPDATE: I am gradually moving to lighter shades of the same color. To go gradually lighter, change from 4 to 5 to 6 of the same color. Instead of using the touch-up versions, I'm just using the full boxes of dye. The range of colors is greater, and the difference in price is negligible. Eventually, the color will show up completely on the white hair that is growing in, and the still-not-gray will look fine. So the new growth of white hair is less noticeable than the demarcation line when I was using the darkest cool brown shades. ... show more

  • Great eyebrow dye for redheads!
Color: 8R Medium Reddish Blonde Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
Love how this shade turned out for me! If you’re a redhead then you know how annoying it is trying to find the right brow products. My eyebrows are naturally pale blond, so even though they are super thick they look barely there without makeup. And makeup is never formulated for ginger/orange hair— the blonde brow gels/powders look ashy/gray on me while brown/auburn is too dark. This is pretty much an exact match for my hair color; so much easier than putting on makeup every day! It was fairly easy to apply as well, with nice clear directions. Tip: if you’re using it for your eyebrows apply with a spoolie to push it into all hairs, then use an angled brow brush or similar to add a layer on top. Wipe the surrounding skin clean to prevent staining. I let it sit for 25 mins as directed, wiped off, then applied for another 25 mins to the tails of my brows to darken them. Will definitely be ordering again! ... show more

  • Got the red out
Color: 8S Soft Silver Size: 6.26 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
They say redheads are rare. Not in my family. I was born a dirty blonde with a brassy red cast. I never could get the red out. This is a beautiful color and if you have problems with brassy color are red tones you just can't get rid of, this might work for you. It worked for me. Or if you just want a nice silver color this is great. I will buy again. ... show more

  • Grey is beautiful!
Color: 8S Soft Silver Size: 6.26 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Great color. Wish it would look like the same color as the box on my hair. Unfortunately for me my previously colored hair doesn’t absorb the color as well as I wished it did. I’m guessing that once my hair grows out entirely it will work better for me. A braver person would cut off their old growth before applying this color, but I’m not one of those brave people. So when it does grows out I’ll be trying it again as I really love this color. The conditioner is quite nice too and there is enough to last me through several shampooings. ... show more

  • Best copper redhead dye
Color: 8SC Medium Copper Blonde Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I have been box dying my hair red for years. I have tried some deeper, auburn reds. And some reddish blondes. This is just the best. It is an orange/copper for sure, not red. I am a natural dirty blonde, and it’s vibrant on my hair color, but not carrot orange. I have never had someone ask if it’s dye, people always compliment my beautiful “natural” color. I can’t speak to those with natural darker color, or people with bleached hair. But if you’re a natural blonde who’s wanting to test the waters with red, this is a great place to start. ... show more

  • Leaves hair shiny & soft.
Color: 8C Medium Cool Blonde Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
I found the product easy to apply. It covers the gray hair. It smells wonderful. There was no skin irritation. I loved the highlights in my hair. This lasted around 3 weeks without a touchup. I was very pleased with the results.

  • Found my shade!
Color: 6W Light Mocha Brown Size: 6.26 Fl Oz (Pack of 3)
Im familiar with this brand but there’s not really any reviews here for shade 6w “light mocha brown” so here it is- I absolutely love it!! My hair was bleached blonde and I wanted to find something that was closest to my natural hair which is a darker strawberry blonde color. Nailed it 👌🏻 it’s so pretty and red in the natural light and a nicer brown tone indoors. I used two boxes and then the next day panicked and used the third box on the lower portion of my hair to ensure that it wasn’t muddy looking. The third box definitely dried my hair out but if I had stuck with the two my hair would have not really felt damaged I don’t think. The smell is strong even after washing with shampoo and my bf could barely stand to be in the same room with me the first day but I will absolutely continue using this shade. Oh! I will say that I use a bowl and dye brush instead of my hands. I also use my own gloves. This helps so much with application. Will possibly update with fading process if I can remember lol FADING UPDATE: Second picture with the heart glasses is after three weeks, washing my hair twice a week. It’s faded quite a bit but it’s still beautiful and now even closer to where I was before bleaching. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments. 10/10 ... show more
