🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Automatic Chicken Door Opener is an appreciated device for chicken owners providing assistance in the operation of chicken doors. Most customers have found the product to be a great time saver, allowing them to focus more on their other responsibilities. However, it seems several customers have encountered minor issues with setting up and using the product, mainly related to the product's slow operation speed and its battery life.

Pros

  • 🐓 Convenient and a great time-saver.
  • 🐥 Easy to setup and use after initial learning curve.
  • 🌥 Has a daylight sensor and timer feature.
  • 🌧 Durable, featuring a gasket to keep moisture out.

Cons

  • ⏱ The slow operation speed of the opener bothered some users.
  • 🔋 Battery life may be shorter than advertised.
  • ❄ Potential to malfunction in cold climates.
  • 😕 Some users had difficulty with initial setup and operation.

Should I Buy It?

If you maintain a chicken coop and value recycling your time, this product certainly seems beneficial despite the few minor operational issues reported. The Automatic Chicken Door Opener could vastly simplify your daily routine as echoed by most customers, and its pros seem to outweigh its cons. Make sure you are okay with potentially shorter battery life and a slower operational speed.

  • A Convenient Time Saver
My chickens like to go out bright and early, and they like to stay out until dark. That means I have to get over there in a timely fashion. But sometimes, I am not able to get there on time. This automatic chicken door opener makes my life so much better! Although it took me a bit to figure out what time I should set it to (they were stuck outside one night), the girls and I have gotten the hang of things and are enjoying the convenience of letting this do-dad do the work for me. I have mounted mine inside so I don't have to worry about it getting rained or snowed on, but it seems durable and well made. It also has a gasket you put around the edge to keep moisture out and protect the inside from breaking. Downsides: 1. it was kind of hard to figure out the programming at first, and when it works. 2. it's slow! I guess I won't have to worry about any chickens getting stuck in the thing since they would have plenty of time to get out of the way. 3. I'm a little worried about battery life. It says 6 months, but we shall see how it goes. Overall, I would recommend this product. It makes my life a lot easier! ... show more

  • Works
Works as it should. Only been out for a few days so time will tell. Didn't come with batteries as it said though.

  • Worth the money!
Installed this automatic opener with the ChickenGuard Self Locking Door 6 months ago to replace a wood manual door. We mounted it on the inside of our coop so the daylight sensor isn't an option but the timer has worked great AND the original batteries are still going! We update our timer settings every couple months for changes in day length, it's super easy and takes less than 30 sec. The opener moves the door VERY slowly, the door is light enough that our impatient Orpington and Brahmas can scoot under and lift it a bit as they hurry out in the morning. Similarly the door has closed on a lingering chicken, it lifts, pauses then attempts to close a moment later; all gentle enough that a Brahma may continue to linger... We've had 2 instances where the door was still open after the scheduled close time- not sure why but suspect one of the girls was blocking the door from closing. ?? Install was quick, reframing to fit the new door was the only headache. We built our coop from repurposed (free) materials so the price of this upgrade was hard to justify initially but the historic winter rains in CA offered a daily reminder that it was money well spent. :) ... show more

  • Great value and product, definitely not perfect though.
The media could not be loaded. This chicken door saves me time every morning and evening, and liberates me to worry about more important things than closing/opening the chickens. While the product is overall exactly as advertised, I have some notes as the product has failed twice: 1. The batteries realistically only work for 2 months and seem to get drained quicker than they claim. No biggie, just keep it in mind if you see it acting sluggish. 2. If temperatures dips below 25 degrees (F) or so, keep an eye out because the electronics could freeze up. 3. Make sure whatever door you install can’t get caught on anything, and that if you use wood you give plenty of space in case the board swells with moisture. Keep it clear from any degree the chickens might kick in the doorway. 4. If you notice the unit has failed and the buttons are swapped (up makes it go down, etc.) was then the string has gotten looped over the inner spool too much. Push one of the buttons and allow it to swing around the spool and straighten out. 5. It might be a good idea to add some kind of an overhanging protector for the unit (if you can’t put it inside the coop) such as I did with a plastic container. I specially cut so the string can pass freely through it. Small things like that can make the unit last longer over time. 6. ENJOY THE FREEDOM!!! ... show more

  • Works great, needs wifi option
Adapted this to open and close my dog door with the timer. Works well as expected, would love to be able to open the door via wifi

  • Disappointed
Received a used unit, but paid full price. The string was tangled and I had to work on that before it could even be installed. Came in a weird box that had a different product in it originally. Unit was not wrapped. Was dirty. Had no instructions. Had to look on YouTube to figure out how to program it. Bought it to replace a unit that was given to me. Would have returned it, but desperately needed it to keep my flock safe while I was away. Deeply disappointed due to the amount I paid, but so far, unit has worked as it’s designed to work. Just wish it had been a new unit since I paid for new, not used or refurbished. ... show more

  • Lifesaver
Easy to set up! The light sensor is a nice feature. I saw some comments wondering how the chickens don't get caught in the door. We were worried about that, too, since our hens like to hang out in the door of the coop looking out until the very last minute when we shove them back away from the door to close it :). Some people commented that the door goes too slowly to hurt them. We found that it goes *kind of* slow, but faster than we were hoping it'd go. It did catch one of them the first night on the head. We watched them the next two nights and then they learned to back up when it started coming down. It's soooooo nice to not have to get up on Sunday and let them out! ... show more
