After looking at multiple coops at our local farm supply stores, we decided to order this coop despite some of the reviews. We are glad we did! We have a large 12’x12’ run, and only needed the actual coop. This coop was much larger than those with runs attached at similar price points. Also, I knew we could send it back to Amazon easily if we weren’t pleased, but we are. 1st, if you are unfamiliar with pre-fabricated coops, you may consider this one to be flimsy, but in comparison to others it is not. We added 8 screws in between the pre-drilled on the front and back joining edges and it really sturdied up more. If you are planning on leaving this coop out in the open, I would not recommend. If you are placing it in a large run, I really suggest it. 2nd, the latches and hinges are not very strong but could easily be upgraded if the coop was going to be in the open and not in a run. If it were going to be left out in the open I would not trust the hardware to keep anything out. 3rd, the screws are pressure resistant and the heads will break off if you screw in to fast or tight when getting close to sinking. Took us once to learn to slow the auto screwdriver down and take our time sinking the screws. 4th, we will be weatherizing it with some Thompson’s waterproofing, the wood is stained not sealed. BUT, we would do that to any one we would’ve bought. It’s common sense to know they are better protected and last longer this way. 5th, we will also be raising the coop up off the ground a bit like another reviewer posted pics of. It will help in protecting the longevity of the wood. Honestly, we are country farmers and we build almost everything. My husband built our barn, for example, and he said while assembling the coop that there is no way we could build a coop like this for the money we paid on our own. We would’ve had so much more money and time put in. Hope this helps some of you with you future purchase. ... show more

  • Repair after repair
If I could go back and not waste the money on this coop I would. We purchased this coop for my flock of 11 chickens. Our current coop at the time was too small and as our babies were getting old enough to join our exiting flock, we needed a much larger coop to split their sleeping arrangements. Assembly took several hours and once up was not only beautiful, but was exactly what we needed and the flock immediately chose to house in the coop. We secured every latch with a lock to prevent unwanted entry very handy feature! 2 months later we lost our first chicken. Due to the cheap material and poor construction a raccoon was able to pry slats off 1 of the nesting boxes and kill 1 of my chickens. We repaired it and thought we solved the problem. 1 month after that, the ramp door was ripped off its hinges. Only left hanging on by the lock we had secured to it. 2 chickens were killed. We repaired the ramp door and hoped we had fixed it. This was September. We went another two months with only having to repair single slats as they were ripped off. And lost only 1 chicken due to the raccoon only being able to grab the chicken and pulling its head through the slats it had ripped off. Christmas Day we went to let our girls out and the other entry door was laying askew and another was gone. We repaired that door as well. We tried everything from putting stuff in the ground as a repellant to putting up motion lights. We had thought we had solved the problem as another 2 months passed with no further damage. At the beginning of March the entire side to a nesting box had been pulled off and 2 of my chickens were destroyed. After THAT repair we wrapped the entire nesting boxes in chicken wire. No more pulling the slats off as we stapled it to the sides of the coop. Only 3 hens left and a rooster out of 11 total. Surely we couldn’t possibly need to do anything else. Well…we were wrong. Last week, the ramp door was again ripped from the hinges. And another was taken. We started with a mature flock of 4 we had for 2 years, a flock of 3 teen chickens , and raised 4 more chicks to maturity. In less than 10 months the flock has been reduced to only 2 hens left. Everyone understands there’s a risk to owning chickens and there is only so much you can do while your chickens roam around a chicken run. Hawks could swoop in, foxes could slip through a fence, heck a tree branch could take them out! The only time you don’t worry is while in a locked and secured coop for the night. Very heartbroken over this loss and will never recommend to anyone not only this brand but anything like it. ... show more

  • This is a great chicken coop! *** 1 Year Update *** This is a great chicken coop! *** 1 Year Update ***
*** 1 Year Update *** My review below still stands. I like this coop, but a few observations. We have had to make a couple of minor repairs over the year. It's put together with staples and we've had a couple pull out. Nothing major, and the repairs were quick and solid. After about 8 months our chickens decided they wanted to sleep on a high perch in the run area instead of in the coop. For awhile we would put them in at night, but they still preferred to be outside. The perches inside coop are lower than the nesting boxes and they want to perch up high. They do still use the coop as a nesting box and they go in every day to lay their eggs. *** Original Review *** I really like this chicken coop. The size is perfect! We have 8 baby chicks that have grown almost big enough to move into their new home. It has two side boxes with hinged tops, and a total of six nesting areas. There's a large tray that pulls out to make it easier to clean. The front door just opens, and the rear door folds down to make a ramp for the chickens. We have backed the coop up to an enclosed runway area that we already had to give them plenty of space while we aren't home, and they will free run in the back yard while we are there. The directions are not great, but just take your time and make sure you have each part in the right direction before screwing it together. It all does make sense. There's ventilation on the front and back, with additional vents on the top that can close in cold or inclimate weather. The box was packed well and nothing was broken. It's not hard to assemble, and can be done by one person, however, step one is putting the four walls together, and it did help to have a second person to hold pieces together. The wood is fir, which is a light and soft wood. It makes it easy to screw in the screws. I recommend doing this by hand so that you don't damage the wood with a power driver. Once everything is put together, it's very sturdy and feels like it will hold up. We put it up on a cement block foundation to protect from termites and raise it up higher to help protect the girls from predators. It will also make it easier to get the eggs out. One problem though, which is where I take a star off. The kit is short four screws, and they weren't just missing. The top section is held down with four screws on each side. The directions show only two screws. The parts list shows 36 D screws, and there are 36 but this discrepancy leaves you four screws short. I had to go to the hardware store to get the screws and unless the manufacturer fixes this, you will two so just be prepared. I can't wait to put the chickens in their new home. Probably be in the next few days. ... show more

  • good basic coop to expand on
we built our first coop ourselves with salvaged wood and siding, although this coop is much smaller, it's still an upgrade for our girls. it does appear to have been designed by someone that knows nothing about chickens. our 7 full sized hens fit just fine, but giving 6 nesting boxes for such a small amount of chickens seems like a waste of space as they all crown into one nesting box no matter how many options you give them (maybe a second if someone is desperate). the "dividers" between the nesting boxes got knocked out over and over until we put in a couple screws to wedge them in place. we also had to put a strip of wood along the bottom the nesting boxes, as the tiny lip didn't prevent eggs from being kicked out accidentally. the roosts are much too narrow and really should be higher. although we've screwed real pieces of wood on top of them now, several of our ladies prefer the nesting box area since it's the same height anyway. the roosting bars also got knocked off all the time before we screwed in the new stuff. obviously with all the screws we added, we had to get our own, but I believe there were more pre-drilled holes for screws than we had screws provided to begin with. We knew when we ordered that we wouldn't be using the ramp (too easy for our toddler to stomp on and break), or I'd knock a star off for that as well. very hard to operate the latch, unwedge from the rest of the coop, rewedge to relatch... we did change the hardware on the regular door to a hook , so we can attach the hook the the run cage, otherwise the wind or wild chickens kept shutting it. we also put the whole coop on bricks so the tray isn't as close to the ground. PROS: the cedar smells good. we assembled the coop in the house and were able to carry it outside. if you have a decent size run or free-range your chickens, this is totally enough room for at least 7 normal sized hens to sleep and stay out of rain. obviously, it's a good looking coop. if you just really don't want to build a(nother) coop and you have a little know-how, it's a great frame to expand on. ... show more

  • Not very study, I would not recommend this product at all
When we put this coup together it was easy and looked decent. Sadly this was not the case, it's not sturdy at all and broke very easily when we moved it (Very carefully, it wasn't like we tossed it around). The top part doesn't latch and didn't have a way to screw it down to the base. We lost multiple chickens because of it. Do not pay the almost $600 for this. It's not worth a penny over $100 ... show more

  • Poor quality walls
We’re first time chicken owners and didn’t want to invest in building a coop, but we also didn’t want something cheap. With this coop being fairly expensive we thought we’d be getting something decent, but I regret purchasing this. We live in Wisconsin and anticipated needing to insulate and make modifications, but we honestly could have built a coop by scratch by now with all the modifications and reinforcements needed. The walls are VERY thin and flimsy. They have a similar strength and weight to shims or paint stir sticks. I ended up getting 11/32” OSB and cutting it to fit each wall. I covered each piece with sheet vinyl for easy cleaning. I will also say that the hinges for the nesting boxes and doors are not very good and should be replaced. It’s kind of difficult finding a good replacement though with how thin the roof is. With that being said, it’s probably a nice coop for a climate that’s consistently in the 50’s-70’s and dry weather. You’ll still need to add silicone to all joints, though. It looks nice, but I expected a lot more out of a coop this expensive. ... show more

  • Falls Apart, Cheaply Made, DO NOT BUY
We purchased this product a few months ago for our chicks once they got big enough to go outside. They’ve been in it about 6-8 weeks now and in just that short time this coop has practically fallen apart. The latches do not work well on the door, a panel just fell off on the bottom and predators got in and grabbed one, killing one of our hens. Since then the side panel on one of the nesting boxes has come loose (and they’re not laying yet so I only open it to clean it out) and the ramp is so cheap the chickens themselves can break out of it. Don’t waste your money, spend the money and time building a decent one. If I could give zero stars I would. ... show more

  • Very cute and easy to assemble. Very cute and easy to assemble.
The house was fairly easy assembly. Yes, it’s pretty flimsy, but we put it on a foundation and reinforced some of the screws. I suggest buying longer screws of your own prior to assembly. We paired it with a run, that was also easy assembly, unless you’re old, fat, and out of shape like we are. Lol. In the end, we are very satisfied with the product. Happy chicken tenders. ... show more
