  • urn stopped working in less than a month
Size: 5.3 Liter Style Name: Hot Water Pot
I'm giving ratings based on an average of experiences between urns I bought in 2019 and 2023. The most recent urn would get only 1 star due to breaking in less than a month. I bought my first Chefman Hot Water Urn back in Jan 2019 to replace a Classic Kitchen urn that had stopped working after 4 years. The manual pump of the 2019 CM stopped working after a few years probably due to the disintegration of the silicone seal. Unlike the CK, the CM did not come with a spare seal. I tried hard to find a new seal to buy, but could not find one. So in Mar 2023 I bought a new CM urn. In just under a month, it did not work when it was plugged in. I checked that the outlet was fine and plugged it into a different outlet anyway. And then I tried using the cord from the old urn (that I had thankfully kept in my basement since it did still work), but it wasn't the cord. The only good thing about the product failing so soon is that it was still within the Amazon return period. The Return Chat said that a new item could not be sent out, but that if I would return the unit by UPS (with Amazon provided paid label), then Amazon would refund the cost. I thought the unit was out of stock, but then I looked and found that the priced had strangely gone up by 50% in the past month, so maybe that's why Amazon was unwilling to just send me a new unit. So instead of paying much more for another CM, I decided to buy another CK unit which was $10 less than the CM instead of 30% more as it was a month ago. Also, I'm reluctant to try another CM given the most recent experience. Comparisons between the Chefman and Classic Kitchen urns: - The CK had an easily detachable lid. In contrast, I could not get the CM lid off even though the instruction manual claims that it can be done. This means that the hinge of the lid often painfully pinched the skin of my fingers when I was trying to dump water out and the lid would close while I was turning the urn upside down. - Neither of the two models is great with manual pumping mode. I think both of them were better when the units were new, but then worked less and less well until failing altogether. If you don't want to use the electric dispenser for religious reasons, you can open the lid and ladle the contents out (and I have friends who have done this with their urns for many years), but it's a pain and can lead to burns if you aren't careful. - I seem to remember that the CK used to spurt a bit of hot water when it first reached boiling. We got into the habit of leaving a mug under the spout to catch that. - The CK I bought back in 2014 came with a spare silicone gasket. - I only use filtered water and I wipe out the mineral deposits at the end of every use, especially after it has been refilled and used constantly over a multi-day period. I also run coffee maker cleaner through the unit a couple of times a year. It is clear that this maintenance is needed, at least in an area like mine with medium hard water, to keep the from getting clogged up with hard water deposits. ... show more

Size: 5.3 Liter Style Name: Hot Water Pot
Not sure why this item has such good ratings and is shipped and sold by Amazon. Price point is decent and quality is acceptable. However, the toxic smell from the inside of the water boiler makes the water taste toxic even after a few refills. Can’t get rid of the smell. Will be returning it immediately. ... show more
