  • Nice clock, but....
Very well built, beautiful case, keeps perfect time, but the two C batteries that power the pendulum only last two weeks. Update: I had a eight pack of C batteries that were about a year old. I used these in the clock at first and the pendulum would stop after two or three days, I changed batteries four times in less than two weeks, so I though maybe the batteries lost some capacity. After going through these 8 batteries I bought a new 4 pack. The first two lasted two weeks before the pendulum stopped. I changed batteries. Last night the pendulum stopped again after two days with new batteries, and since I don't have any more, I just left it on the wall. A while later the pendulum was moving again (and still is this morning) but the chime was 5 hours off. Next update: Reset the chime and it's been working fine for a week or more. Maybe it wasn't hung perfectly level? Don't know what to think, but the return window is closed. If it keeps going I'd give it 5 stars, if it doesn't I guess I'm out $250+ (It was $243+ tax when I ordered it.) 04/16/2020 update. Been working great ever since my last update. Keeps perfect time, the 2 C batteries are still good, the chime sounds great. 5 stars ... show more

  • Bulova C4331 Hartwick Old World Clock, Walnut Finish
Five stars! and were it possible, I would have awarded it more. This is a stately, almost understated, absolutely beauty filled clock. The woodwork that created each and every layer, curve and angle of our new wall clock was meticulous, and very, very good. This wall clock graces a wall everyone sees as they enter our living room. And we enjoy the compliments it receives. It was a great surprise to us that the front glass panel is curved. That detail tells you something of the quality of this clock. The overall appearance of our Bulova Hartwick Old World Clock makes our clock grand, reminiscent of grandfather clocks. The pendulum is not the highest quality, but you would not know it to look at it. And given the surprising price, it is understandable. This clock will be passed on to our children some day. I see a challenge in their future...far future. We warm to the chines. They sound rich every hour and they have made our new place our new home. We enjoy the ability to have them turn off at night, but that was a choice, as was their song and volume. I hope you love yours too! Oh, I forgot to say it is accurate and quiet--not just another pretty face. Kaye Agle 1-30-2014 ... show more

  • Ease of set-up and clock accuracy
Absolutely perfect! After reading previous reviews, our experience was the set-up was easy and all one needs to do is follow the instructions. In that regard, make sure to have the appropriate batteries on hand and install them at the same time. For this clock, one double A and two double C. The impressive observation is that the clock is well constructed and very attractive and sounds realistic. Most important of all, after 30 days, it is still holding accurate time and that is really what matters. ... show more

  • So far So Good
Opposite some of the reviews I read that were negative I purchased the clock anyway. Quality and appearance is nice. We replaced an old style mechanical clock affectionately referenced as the bong bong clock. It's ticker days had come to an end. I was a little concerned with comments on battery life. Note there are 2 D batteries for what appears to be for the pendulum and 1 AA for the time mechanism. The pendulum is strictly decorative and has no influence on the time unlike the case with mechanical clocks. If you own a battery clock you are or should be familiar with the single double AA battery that you have to change about once a year. So far its been working a month with no issues and I used fresh batteries. As far as volume. It is loud enough. Has a volume adjustment and I set it about half way and you can hear through the house. There is a plastic finger for the pendulum to attach to. Cant say for sure but there appears to be a permanent magnet which aids with the swing of the pendulum more than likely to extend battery life. Like I said the D batteries for the pendulum appear to work independent of the time piece. All and all it is in my opinion slightly overpriced considering it is not very intricate from a mechanical stand point. Architecture is sound from an appearance stand point but from a traditional stand point I am leaving a star out. To set the time, change batteries, adjust volume etc. you have to take the clock off of the wall and open the back acces door to do anything. Unlike the front doors or face of traditional wind up clocks that you set hands etc from front. Not a major show stopper just clarifying difference between traditional. The other thing I miss a little is it does not tick like traditional. Due to the battery / electronic time piece and pendulum it is virtually quiet except for when it chimes. So basically the clock is a mix of old school with new school parts. It keeps accurate time. ... show more

  • "Careful removing rubber band on pendulum"
I usually don't write too many reviews but found it necessary to tell you to be careful taking off the little tight rubber band, holding the upper mechanism of the pendulum. By pulling too hard can damage the pendulum, where it might not function or it might not swing to it's fullest. What I did was take small scissors and snipped the rubber band off without any strain on this delicate part. The Bulova C4331 Hartwick Chiming Wall Clock is a beautiful Old World style. My house is an old Victorian with plaster-board walls. Trying to put a screw in, even with a picture hook kit, the wall just crumbles and I can hear the 115 year old spackle chunks falling inside the wall. This clock is considered pretty heavy, especially for these kinds of walls. I used a 1/4" piece of smooth plywood with a snug fit, tapping it in between the woodwork and corner guard of the wall. Then fastened both sides with 2 screws each. Once the plywood is painted, it should blend in with the rest of the wall color nicely. But please remember, if the upper part of the pendulum gets a slight bend from tugging on the band, it can break very easily. (forgot to mention, I added a metal Victorian style on-lay design to the top of the clock to give it a more Victorian look) ... show more
