  • Agreed - great machine
Style: New
UPDATE: Feb 2010: It's been almost 5 years now. I ended up buying two. After 4 years, we wore out the one at our preschool which served as our main printer. The second one has had much lighter duty at home. Still working great. Based on this experience, we've become diehard Brother fans and now own a 6490 and 8460. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I've had mine for 10 months now and it's been very reliable; not one problem with it. It's quick to print out the first page, the display is a monochrome LCD with a backlight so you can see in dark spaces (say, if you keep it under a counter), no paper jams, no nonsense. Also, if you're an Apple owner the drivers are already included with OS X; truly plug n print. What's a real treat is to combine it with an Apple Airport Express and use Apple's Bonjour software to easily convert it to a wireless network printer. Bonjour is available for both OS X and Windows computers, and is a breeze to install. I highly recommend if you're in the market for a multifuntion monochrome laser printer machine that is compatible with both Windows and Mac OS. ... show more

  • Not too bad
Style: New
The print quality is decent, but not as good as my old HP 6p. The print speed is very good, though paper handling is pretty poor. It's copier function is really pretty good for small jobs. It reports paper jams when there are none, the ADF often drags more than one piece of paper through the scanner, and the envelope/special paper feeder only accepts one lousy piece of paper at a time. There's also a persistent "register me" popup when Windows loads, which doesn't give up, even after you've pressed "already registered/don't register" several times. Installation under Linux was very easy (much easier than installing in Windows, even with the provided driver cd). Print speed under Linux is a bit odd, each page takes quite some time to print, though I haven't tried switching to any of the several other drivers for the printer that are part of a normal SuSE 9.x installation. With Vonage, I'm not able to send or receive faxes a lot of the time, and, with certain machines on the other end, couldn't ever transmit or receive. To be fair, it probably is Vonage's fault. Finally, there's an idiotic feature to the main paper tray that doesn't allow you to re-insert the empty tray unless you load more paper (or press a tab). It's the sort of unexpected, poorly designed user interface quirk that shouldn't exist in products that cost more than a few dollars. ... show more

  • Beware Mac compatible claims.
Style: New
It does not have Wi-Fi, you need to plug your computer into the machine with a hard cable for printing and scanning. Scanning does not work with High Sierra. They do not support it. I called brother 3 days after receiving my fax from Amazon and they suggested my choices were to "upgrade" my fax to another model or downgrade the software on my computer. They would not take this back in exchange, would not own up to their advertising that said Mac compatible. I've had great success with brother in the past, but their customer service has gone down the toilet. ... show more

  • Sturdy Workhorse
Style: New
I am buying this to replace the same model I bought refurbished April 2006 for $177. A great workhorse. It finally died after six tax seasons printing out tax returns. Yeah, it isn't good at envelopes. And it does tend to have some paper jams. But it prints great quality and fast. If it lasts as long as the last one I will be thrilled. It works great with my professional tax software to print out tax returns for my business. I have a separate ink jet I can use for envelopes and colored printing and flat bed copying/scanning. I buy the 6700 page toner cartridge which lasts forever. I only replaced the drum a year ago. So I can transfer the drum and toner cartridge from the old MFC 8220 machine to the new one. Extremely good value for the price. ... show more

  • Brother MFC-8220 Laser MFC
Style: New
This replaces an earlier version of the same machine that has effectively handled my small business needs for 15 years with no repairs needed in the interim. The price of this unit at Amazon was about half of the best price I could find anywhere else. I love the high output toner cartridge, which makes printing very economical. The printing quality is excellent. I frequently print files in excess of 100 pages and have noticed that if I print too many in rapid succession, the machine tends to overheat so now I just try to give it a break after a few hundred pages. It continues to function when overheating but I notice that the pages coming out of the machine feel hot and it seems like the toner cartridge needs to be replaced sooner if overheated too much. I don't believe this machine's performance can be beaten in its price range. ... show more

  • Brother MFC-8220 Laser Multifunction Center - used
Style: New
LOTS of paper jams - my old 4550 worked better. I like the paper tray beneath, it collects less dust, none the less I think that might have something to do with my paper jams. If I needed to use it a lot I would not want it at all. The front door would not open, when given extra effort it broke off the half moon part, seems to work better without it. Did I mention LOTS of paper jams? Eats lots of paper. When it came the plastic on the back was broke - does not seem to bother operation. I am James Elmer :-) ... show more

  • After 7 years of heavy use, I purchased another
Style: New
We purchased an MFC 8220 in January 2004. It served the whole family well as a scanner, printer, fax and phone. Two kids used it through high school and college. My wife and I used it for our small business. It was my fault that it broke. Thought we would look for a new all in one thinking that technology had become better. We need every one of the MFC 8220 features and after shopping for 2 weeks, we learned that nothing has surpassed the MFC 8220 in all of these years. We purchased another MFC 8220 and look forward to many more years of service. The only thing that can improve is to upgrade it with a color scanner. Black and white and grey scale are acceptable for most applications. ... show more
