Purchased this as my first laser jet printer as a replacement for an inkjet. Inkjet wasn’t getting used a lot and the printer head dried up. The laser printer should solve that problem. The printer came packed very well and it was pretty heavy. They conveniently have lifting handles built in to the bagging that I found to be very helpful in getting it out and where it was going. The printer was easy to set up and connected to my wifi right away. Print quality is excellent. I have not tried photo printing but don’t really have a need for it. The paper tray is great that you can put half a ream in which for me will last a very long time. So far it has woke up each time we tried to print. From day one of unboxing this printer it never worked right. First it was lines through the documents even on the highest quality setting, then within a few weeks more errors began, like a total refusal to print for no apparent reason with the data being received on the screen, but just a lazy printer that never would work. When it did print, it splattered ink onto the document. We ended up using it for a kids printer so they could just get non-essential docs printed, but then it stopped doing any printing at all about 6 months in. When I contacted support, I had to jump through hoops to prove we were having problems, often getting disconnected because they wouldn't wait more than a minute to let us do the time consuming tasks they asked us to "check" or do. When I finally had enough and asked to simply get a return form to fill out, the agent told me the problem is the "drum" unit (even though I clearly told them about multiple problems-- not just the drum error). He then said "drum units are consumables, and we do not cover the replacement". When challenged on the other issues it was a brick wall-- several agents in, and they would not give any options to return the printer that has never worked right. I asked for contact information to file a complaint to the corporate office, and they brick-walled that as well telling me they would "contact me". Yeah right. In the meantime I am just going to file reports to the BBB and review sites since they can't help customers when it really counts. They do not stand behind their products and the warranty is not real-- they will use any excuse to not replace your printer under warranty. Get ready to be highly annoyed and offended as your money is thrown in the trash with this printer. To make matters worse, the ink toners exploded all over the inside of the printer, so even if I wanted to continue to troubleshoot on my own there is ink all over the inside of the unit (and my rug now). For a duplexing laser color printer, this one is decent, and much cheaper than most other options. I had an older Brother than quit working after about 10 years, and this was the replacement. Print quality isn't as good (not as saturated, and blacks are not nearly as dark, as you would want for professional work). It has connection issues pretty regularly, which my older brother printer never had. Cartridge life seems about the same as my older brother, but it's still lower quality. On the plus side, I've never had any issues with paper jams. Brother used to be the "it just works" brand that everyone went to, but I've had a lot of problems with this one. Brother suggests downloading a print helper, which I did, but it doesn't help. For professional use, I'd probably look elsewhere, unless it's just for internal use, billing, or invoicing where print quality isn't a big deal. For accounting, medical records, or legal, it's really not up to the task. ... show more

We just received the printer yesterday and our first impression is very positive. It was set up in about 10 minutes and work seamlessly with my Mac and our iPhones and iPads. The quality of the photo prints are absolutely amazing. I expected less than photo quality and what we got are almost as good as professionally done prints. I will have to buy an 8 x 10 of one of the pictures we printed just for an accurate comparison. One thing I learned is that the latest Mac release Sonoma has a built-in firewall on the local network and we have to allow Safari to use that in order to use the web browser based set up. The browser based set up page is much more complete than the control panel. The Brother app on the phone is not something that we will probably use. I'm not sure exactly what its purpose is, but it's not to set up the printer. The only problem I've seen so far is when I try to print four full resolution iPhone camera pictures on one sheet of paper, the printer seem to reject the request. I think it had to do with how big those images are, but I'm still investigating. By reducing the resolution and saving them as JPEG. They printed just fine. My previous experience with Brother printers is the black-and-white laser that lasted 15 years until it finally had its first minor maintenance issue. I used that as an excuse to go to color and I'm glad we did. This is an excellent product. I'll report again in six months or a year. ... show more

I contemplated giving this printer only 3 stars as it's a much less robust unit than the previous generation, and it is going the way of HP where you're forced to replace toner long before the cartridges are really empty. The prior generation Brother printers had a hidden menu that you could use to reset the toner counter, and I found that I could often print up to 500 more pages without fading after the "replace toner" warning popped up. They removed that feature on all of their printers now. In addition, they are making it harder to use aftermarket toner. As of now, it just nags you to acknowledge you're using non-OEM and allows you to continue, but rumor has it that if you run any firmware updates, that will go away too. These printer companies are getting out of hand with the predatory cartridge pricing and software blocking any refilling or aftermarket supplies. I'd be willing to pay double for quality OEM toner, but I'm not going to pay 4x, or basically the price of a new printer every time the toner needs to be changed, especially when I know the old toner has a ream of paper worth of toner left in it. All of that said, the printer works well enough for business docs and light graphics. LED printers like this one don't typically handle photos well, so if you want to print those, you really need an inkjet. For basic color documents, it works fine, but don't expect brochure quality. There are also settings in the menu for fine print quality vs. toner save, duplex and adjustments for paper thickness. Of note, none of the Brother HL printers do very well with cardstock or even really thick laser paper. If you need to print on those types of paper, you'll need to go into the printer settings both via the LCD screen on the unit, and also use the full Brother print driver, which allows you to adjust for paper thickness. Basically the printer will warm up the drum more and run the paper slower, so the temperature stays hot enough to fuse the toner. I've also found when printing a lot of thick pages that it's helpful to print 5-10 at a time and then do the next batch, as this allows the drum time to heat back up. If you just run a large batch through it, the toner sometimes flakes off once you get so many pages in, I believe due to the thick paper cooling the drum off too much. Once you're done with thick paper, it's recommended to change the settings back to standard paper thickness. It doesn't seem to hurt anything if you don't, but it prints much slower as it tries to maintain drum temperature. The printer itself is a fairly compact unit, much smaller than the 3270 series it replaced, which is nice for my needs as I ship it to conferences. Brother printers typically hold up well to transport so long as you remove the toner cartridges before shipping. If you don't, you'll have a rainbow of toner dust all over and inside the printer, and a big cleaning job to get it to not add unwanted backgrounds and splotches to your print jobs (don't ask me how I learned this many years ago:-). It's about 10 LBS lighter than the old ones too, so a little cheaper to ship and easier to manage. I bought a pelican case and cut the foam to fit it perfectly. I wrap the toner in the original packaging and tape it up and find it will work fine if not shipping too far. If it's cross country, I just send new toner as the amount of jostling it gets causes a mess inside the packaging. I save the partials for use at more local conferences since even the non-OEM cartridges are a bit pricier than the prior model. A few quirks about this printer are that the paper tray doesn't really hold legal size paper. Brother came up with a workaround to allow it to work, you load the paper in and the don't quite seat the paper tray as normal and it allows use of legal. It works fine once you figure it out, and it allows the printer to have a smaller footprint, so it's a good trade off. The printer is quiet enough, comparable to the older models and comparable models. You hear the fan running, but it's not intrusive. One thing that is not as good as the prior models are the cartridge drums. The cartridges snap into the drum units. The old ones snapped right in were very snug. For this model, the drums are a bit flimsy so it can be a little tedious to seat the cartridge into them. Not a huge issue, but I was spoiled by the old ones. Once they are installed, they are fine. I have multiple units of this model and have only had one issue and that was a failed drum unit. For some reason it kept printing a dark line on the pages. I changed toners and tried both OEM and aftermarket and had the same issue. I ended up having to rush out and buy another printer and decided to just use the drum units out of that one, and it worked flawlessly. That was a year ago and the printer is still working fine after being shipped to 16 different cities. The new printer, minus drum units, is still in the box as a backup for if this one fails. New drum units are around $70/set. I still choose Brother over other brands because they have not yet fully locked me out of using aftermarket toner. Being a traveling printer and having challenges safely packing toner to not make a mess in transit, I replace the toner a lot more frequently than an office user would. I can't justify $300+ for new OEM toner when a $79 version works comparably. If Brother reads my review, my request of them is to either charge $100 more for the printer and fully allow non-OEM toner, or price your OEM toner more competitively, and I'll buy it. And also, please return the "open the lid while pressing the two buttons while standing on one foot and chanting Don Quixote lines" to reset the toner count. Toner is not cheap and it's wasteful and not environmentally friendly to discard it before it's fully spent. These requests are all that are preventing me from giving you five stars. ... show more
