  • Works great, but manual is not very helpful
I almost returned this item because I couldn't figure out how to stop charging my car early. I read the broken-English manual and it states that to stop charging, to first unplug the charger from the outlet, then unplug the other end from the car. I tried, and it worked. Problem is, I don't want to have to unplug a big 50A receptacle every time I disconnect my car. After playing around with it a while, I found that I can press and hold the "A" button for several seconds, and it will then prompt on screen to "stop charging?" at which point I can confirm by pressing and holding "A" again. The other problem I had was that I couldn't at first get it to charge at any other rate than 10A (2.3kW). The manual said to press "A" to change the current limiter to a different level. I kept pressing the "A" button to make it cycle to other power levels but it didn't change from 10A (this is how I accidentally discovered the solution above to cancelling a charging session). It turns out, you need to select the charge level BEFORE charging, not while charging (when it is not connected to the car). Now that I know this, I can easily cycle it the target 32A (7.7kW) charge level. It includes a mounting cradle for the main charger "brick" and a separate cradle for the car connector, with a lip to hold the cable nicely. This means it works as a wall-mounted charger most of the time, but I can just unplug it and lift it out of the cradle (no tools), put it in the nice carrying case that it comes with, and throw it in the frunk as an emergency mobile charger for road trips. It includes the adapter to charge off a normal 15A household outlet for this purpose. In either 110V or 220V modes, it lets you limit the charging rate (only while NOT connected to the car, but that's fine now that I know). Had I known it had the feature of limiting current, I would have bought the bigger 40A version instead of the 32A version. I wanted to run limited to 32A because I have other loads on the same sub-panel and didn't want the breaker to trip. I would have bought the 40A and limited it to 32A in the winter when my shop heater on the same panel might kick on and let it run 40A in the summer. ... show more

  • Got the 32amp version for guests, it works
I don't have an EV, but I have friends with EV's, and a cabin on the Mendocino coast. I got this as an inexpensive way for them to charge their cars when visiting. I invited one for dinner, and we tried it out in Level 1 mode, just plugged in to a normal outlet using the supplied adapter. It worked, and while slow, it's enough to relieve their range anxiety. They're coming for a visit, not to fill up and go, so a slow rate over 12 hrs or more is OK. I'm going to add a 240V outlet, but it's great that this works as-is in the meantime. Since I don't have an EV, I don't have experience with charging, and I'm puzzled that this charger doesn't have an off switch, the manual says to unplug it to turn it off, which doesn't seem like a good idea, if it's drawing a lot of current it would arc and damage the connector over time. But I think my friend told her car to stop charging before she unplugged the connector, so maybe that's it. I saw some reviewers say to hold down the "A" button to turn it off, but nothing happened when I did that. I took a star off because the plastic holster for the charger was missing, but that's not a big deal. My use will be light and occasional, so I didn't want to spend a lot and I wanted something simple, no need for Bluetooth, wifi, or an app. ... show more

  • Does not last
Color: 40A-(NEMA14-50) Size: 25ft
First impression was that the product was of a decent value relative to the price. Charging cable is relatively thick. Button to select between current doesn't have a good feel but works OK. The device is simple but functioned acceptably for 8 or 9 months. Then one night my car stopped charging before it reached target charge. When charging the next time, I noticed the current going into my car was less than it always had been, and the cable was hotter than usual both where it connects to the car and where it connects to the wall. Most of the cable was not hot, but it gets hot at these connection points. Where it connects to the wall, operating at 40A it was hot to the touch and would probably burn my hand if I held it longer than a touch. I turned it down from 40A to 32A, which was better, but still hot. I borrowed 32A chargers that my friends got with their GM and Tesla vehicles; both warmed up during operation, but both were much cooler than my Bokmann. I would say the Bokmann was always hotter than these other brands, but in the past month, it has become uncomfortably hot and no longer reaches full current at 40A. I'm likely to stop using this charger and buy a more reputable brand to replace it. ... show more
