  • Not Safe Without Additional Tie Downs
Style: Canoe Carrier
Bought this to mount my canoe on my truck's roof rack. I wanted the foam cushions more than the other pieces. The cushions are non-slip (almost sticky) and adequately firm with cut outs to fit and hold onto the gunnels. They protect my canoe from abrasion on the rack. I did find a use for the included cords, which are good quality, easy to tie without slipping apart, and easy to untie. The included hold down strap is of no use and from the instructions seemed intended to loop around the canoe and inside the car roof (windows down) with the cords tied to the bumpers - I can't say this is safe but for very slow speeds. There is also no method to adequately cinch any of the hold down components. I added additional ratchet straps which loop over the canoe and secure to the roof rack. This with front and rear rope tie downs that I can cinch tightly means I can drive at any speed. ... show more

  • Good solution for putting canoe and ladder on car
Style: Canoe Carrier
This worked well. I have a car that doesn't have cross bars and I just bought a canoe from Craigslist and wanted to take it home. I live on a lake so I really don't have to drive much with the canoe on the roof or for a long distance again (once I brought the canoe back from buying it on Craigslist). So, I thought this was a less expensive solution than paying $400 for cross bars. It worked GREAT. The foam cushions were perfect and carried this canoe well. I would recommend it again for that reason. That said, I think that there could have been more or perhaps better straps for the canoe in this kit, which, is why I only give it 4 stars. I ended up using some rope and straps that I already had purchased at Home Depot and that worked well in the end. I later used the foam cushions to buy an outdoor ladder to reach the top of my house. Again, crossbars for my Highlander are $200 and I just needed to get the ladder from Home Depot home. It, again, worked out GREAT. I saved money on the crossbars and the cushions completely steadied the ladder on the roof of my car with no worries, or scratches. ... show more

  • In every other way the quality is good.
Style: Canoe Carrier
My only compliant is that the height of the foam blocks is a little on the low profile side. The slight curvature of my roof top end up touching the canoe in the midsection between the blocks. A towel there keeps the canoe from rubbing the roof. A flatter roof should have no problem. In every other way the quality is good. ... show more

  • Not Thick Enough
Style: Canoe Carrier
I used it to transport my canoe, but it stops there. The blocks are too thin. The foam is too thin under the canoe. This puts the gunwale to close to the roof. It scratched my car when moving the canoe into position because there was a slight curve that was not bridged by the blocks. The foam will also roll under the canoe and because they provide the smallest possible blocks, it does not give much room for shifting. The foam block is tapered, which will increase the pressure directly under the canoe. The foam cannot distribute the force evenly across the bottom. The blocks should be rectangular like most other kits. I did not notice how small the blocks were when ordering. It was available quickly and I needed it quickly. I will be buying a more substantial kit now. My canoe weighs 57 lbs and it struggled. I fear for anyone with a 90lb canoe using these blocks that hopes to protect the roof from dents and scratches. There is a reason this kit is cheaper! ... show more
