  • Excellent trailer - breeze to put together Excellent trailer - breeze to put together
Style: 4 J-rack Kayak Carriers & Spare Tire
After looking for several options to carry my kayaks, I ended up purchasing this nice little trailer. There are many great things about this trailer, but here are a few highlights: - Built solid. This is not a flimsy thing at all. - Rides very well. No bouncing around even when it's empty, and trails straight as an arrow. - Handles highway speeds well - Impeccable assembly instructions. It's the best written assembly manual, period! - Packaging is great as well and there are no surprises (see the images I shared). It took me about 2 evenings to put it all together; about 2-2.5 hours each. We turned it into a fun project for the whole family, so you can probably put it together in 3 hours easily. There's not much heavy lifting, so one person can do it on his own, but an extra set of hands is never a bad idea. When you're putting it together, follow the instructions. They are very well written and all the hardware for each section is packaged separately. Don't jump ahead, because you will end up having to backtrack. Just follow the sequence in the manual. If you have purchased the kick stand or the storage trunk, make sure you insert these into your assembly process to save time. The kick stand needs to be installed while you're putting together the coupler. The plates for the storage trunk need to be installed when you're assembling the axle springs. For the assembly, you really need a deep socket wrench. I had a standard one and it was a tad difficult at times. The hardest part of the assembly was positioning the bars and the kayak carriers. When positioning the kayak carriers, I mounted one flush against the hardware that connects the load bar to the U-shaped load bar support, on the outside. Mounted the second one inside with a 12" gap between the two. Did the same on the other side and it worked fine. A few irritations about this trailer: - The white ground wire is a tad too short. If the connection on your vehicle is right on your hitch receiver, or if you have it dangling out, it might not be a problem. However, my car had a factory-installed socket and it was too far to the left. I had to use a 12" 4-pin trailer extension to make it work. - The coupler is a bit difficult to attach. I think this is not really a problem if I adjust the nut a bit, but so far I've been lazy. - The rear load bar is not as stable as the front one for some reason. It's fine for carrying kayaks, bikes etc, but I wouldn't put too much weight on it when/if carrying cargo. - 17' kayaks seem to be the longest you can carry with this. Probably 18' wouldn't be an issue either. However, if you own/plan to own anything longer, you'll need to get some sort of tongue extension kit for it. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and have been quite impressed with the build quality of this trailer. I highly recommend it. It's also flexible enough thanks to the load bars. You can essentially remove the kayak carriers and put ski, canoe or bike carriers or even cargo boxes. It's a cheaper alternative to Yakima's rack-n-roll trailer. UPDATE: I've been using this trailer for a month now. Took several drives. Handles excellent on highway speeds and is very easy to handle. I had to redo the electrical connection for the ground because I had not crimped the o-ring tight enough when I assembled it and it came loose. Not a hard repair, but it's still a hassle. I had put pictures of the product, but they seem to have disappeared for whatever reason. It has made kayaking with 4-kayaks a lot simpler. It gets a lot of attention too. ... show more

  • I love this trailer; here's why:
Style: Microsport Xt - Retractable Tongue
1. Amazon delivered in less than a week, no damage at all. 2. Directions are clear. READ them start to finish in advance, then read them a second time. It will eliminate silly mistakes as you execute the build. 3. I built the trailer in a garage in one day, roughly 8 hrs. If you can change the oil/filter on your car, you can do this. 4. I looked at the Rack-n-roll trailer as well. The Malone is significantly heavier. That may be a drawback when moving it around your yard or parking lot, but it tracks like an arrow on the highway, and I've loaded it up with items a lot heavier and less aerodynamic than 2 17' sea kayaks. It is tough and stable. Before you lament the cost, I have noticed dozens of places this trailer COULD have been made cheaper. The hardware is excellent quality, the frame is solid as a rock. No twisting, no rusting no stripped bolts. 5. Company support was stellar. I laid out the parts prior to start, and could not find 2 large structural members. OK, this is not my proudest moment; the Malone contact informed me that the missing parts were tucked inside other larger parts. 6. I added large 6" wheels from Home Depot on the rear cross member so that I can tip the trailer up on end and roll it into a storage location. I also added, and recommend adding; a spare tire, the Malone box (perfect fit), and I added a plyboard shelf in front of the box. 7. I recommend two modifications that I will be doing this winter; change the tail lights to LED, and enclose the wiring harness in either light hose or flexible plastic tubing. 8. I've been using this trailer primarily to haul sea kayaks on weekly trips to the coast for 2 summers. I hose down the trailer after each trip. No signs of rust yet. I have the aluminum wheels and love them. 9. One build/maintenance suggestion: There are a few nuts/bolts that are tough to access with either a standard socket or an adjustable wrench. I am looking for a thin walled extended socket (same idea as a spark plug socket) to easily reach those items. You should also recheck those fasteners at the beginning of each season. I had to retighten several of them this spring, and was very surprised that was needed. Satisfying build experience, extremely useful, good quality, excellent customer support. ... show more

  • Very nice trailer
Style: Microsport - Base
It took me one leisurely day to assemble this trailer. It looks really good and it makes loading and unloading kayaks a breeze. Beats the heck out of hoisting kayaks up on the roof of our Jeep. The directions were very good and easy to follow. Another great thing about this trailer is that you are always ready to hook up and go at a moments notice when you get the chance. The folks at Malone were quick, efficient and friendly when I called to get the needed documents to title and license the trailer. The man I talked to asked me if I had assembled the trailer yet, and did I have any problems, and then offered to assist me in any way needed. No help was needed but I appreciated his interest. The only suggestion I have is that the light kit that comes with the trailer only had four clips to secure the wiring in the frame channels. I could have used two more, for a total of six. Also the license plate holder in the light kit is made of plastic. I was afraid that the plastic might eventually fatigue and crack from age and vibration, and then I might lose the license plate, so I replaced it with a metal license plate bracket that I picked up at an auto parts store. I think this is a really sharp looking trailer that will give me many years of service and then bring a good price at my estate auction when I am dead. Well worth the price in my opinion. P.S. I have taken four trips to current river since I bought this trailer, (about 300 miles one way), carrying an Old Town Predator MX (a fairly heavy Kayak), and an Old Town Cameron 120. The trailer trails nicely even at 70 mph interstate speeds, as well as rough back country roads. Even with the Kayaks loaded, the tongue weight is light, so I have found that a trailer dolly is not even needed. It is quick and easy to hook up and unhook. This makes it easy to park the trailer beside our car in parking lots, such as at a Motel. The trailer has attracted much interest and many compliments from people we meet on our trips. ... show more

  • Sweet trailer!
Style: 4 J-rack Kayak Carriers & Spare Tire
Trailer is awesome! Could not be any happier with this purchase. Use it to store and transport 4 recreational kayaks. Plenty sturdy for my purposes. No issues assembling, even without recommended deep well socket, a ratcheting box end wrench works just fine. Pulls like a dream and long tongue makes backing a breeze. J-style kayak carriers make it so easy to hold and strap kayaks down. Also purchased the storage trunk and the retractable tongue kit (main reason I bought this trailer), that allows me to store fully loaded trailer in garage. My ONLY negative comment is that the tongue will not retract all the way in as long as you have the storage trunk installed. This is a minor detail, but prevented me from rating 5 stars. *UPDATE* Still love this trailer! The storage box, not so much. There is no way to lock the box to the trailer, and since I retract the trailer tongue to store trailer cannot leave the box mounted in the trailer. I see Malone is now making a storage bag that looks like it mounts up high in the trailer that will allow the tongue to retract. Still use the box to store straps and such, so not a total loss. Have changed the trailer rack configurations three times now as my kayaks/canoes selections have changed over the past three years. Each time required additional purchase of different mounting bars/systems and each has worked like a dream. The base trailer system allows for a host of different configurations, which makes it very versatile. Great purchase! ... show more

  • Not worth the money. Build your own.
Style: 4 J-rack Kayak Carriers & Spare Tire
I was super disappointed to see about ten boxes in my driveway. I thought I was buying a trailer from Amazon not IKEA. Took 2 days to put together. I bought the heavy duty one and still feels flimsy as hell. They give you a spare tire and mount but not extra lug nuts to put the wheel on. And you have to modify a 9/16 wrench to hold a nut for the D rings. This thing for what it is, is way over priced. If I had it to do over I’d take the 2 days and weld up a real trailer. Seems like Chinese junk to me. ... show more

  • Great trailer
Style: 4 J-rack Kayak Carriers & Spare Tire
If you are looking to make your life easier, save time and reduce lifting, this trailer is for you. Good value, good quality and no surprises. The product ships via UPS and arrived in a few days. The instructions were very well done. Assembly took 4-5 hours with two people. Minimal tools required. I've taken it on a few short road trips and it works well. It seems to trailer a little better when fully loaded. I think this is because it is so light it bounces a little when you hit some bumps. I'm pulling it behind a minivan and you would hardly know it is back there. Loading is very easy. Make sure to load the inner boats first including straps and covers otherwise it's a little too tight to get to the straps. Proof of purchase, VIN # and other documentation shipped separately and arrived 1-2 days after the trailer. This is needed to register the trailer. Keep this in mind if you are on a tight schedule. Only negative comment is that the manufacturer should include more clips that hold the wires to the frame. I called them and they sent three more. I'd have been happier if they sent 10. ... show more

  • Follow the instructions in order as indicated!!
Style: 4 J-rack Kayak Carriers & Spare Tire
I have researched the Yakima & Malone kayak trailers and found the Malone trailer to be an exceptional value and very high quality for the price!! The Malone is a galvanized metal trailer whereas the Yakima is aluminum hence the reduced load capacity. The Malone package also includes 4 sets of J cradles, 12’ long tie-down straps & a spare tire where with the Yakima these needed accessories are added costs to the trailer purchase. The instructions are perfect, follow them and you should have no problems!! If you read and follow instructions in the order given, anyone can assemble this trailer road ready within 3-4 hours. I was done in 2h-45m!! The tires had the 65psi called for. There isn't any problems that I can see with the new wiring harness connections as previously complained about. I did wrap the connections with electrical tape and also any areas subject to abrasion. The kayaks (12.5’ Wilderness Pungos) dropped right into the J cradles and tied down securely with no problems at all. When I road tested with kayaks loaded there were no problems and no loose bolts when I returned!! On its first 500 mile round trip the trailer tracked perfectly behind a F150, handled highway speeds up to 80mph with no sway or vibrations, handled road bumps without bouncing around and once again no loose bolts!! One of the welcome pages indicated that they have increased the load capacity to 850# and have included LED lighting and improved connections!! The lighting package is outstanding!! The only improvement I made was to add a 1/2” eye bolt to the front of the main yoke tube just behind the hitch connection so bow lines can be easily tied off and also two 3/8” eye bolts on each side of the back rail for stern lines for added safety on longer trips. When I had a couple of questions the Malone Tech Support was outstanding, answering clearly & within the same day!! I would certainly recommend Malone trailers to anyone looking for a great little kayak trailer for a fair & reasonable price!! My wife also thinks it’s cute!!! ... show more

  • Do it. Don’t hesitate another day.
Style: Microsport Xt - Retractable Tongue
I’m so happy I bought this trailer. I hemmed and hawed for several years before taking the leap. I just got tired of loading the kayaks on top of my SUV. It got to the point that I went less often due to the hassle. This trailer makes it a breeze. Assembly was OK. About what I expected. I received my shipment of boxes spread out over 3 days. Thankfully, I received the frame parts first so I could start assembly and complete as I got the other boxes. I believe there were 5 total. Taking my time and reading directions multiple times before proceeding, it took me about 4-5 hours spread out over 3 days to assemble. I was in no rush. The instructions were clear with good pictures for all the important steps. Towards the end of assembly, there were a couple steps that I was unsure of and were less clear but I was able to figure it out. I already owned the Malone mounts so I didn’t need to purchase a package with those included. As far as what configuration to purchase, I went back and forth between the aluminum vs galvanized. The selling point on the aluminum was the retractable tongue and ability to store it upright. As it turns out, I would have been just as satisfied without the upgraded pieces. In order to stand it up, you need to disconnect the wiring harness, slide the tongue back, resecure it and then lift the trailer onto the runner bumpers. I attempted this but it seemed that my J hook mounts in the rear were preventing it from standing in a stable fashion. Since that seemed a little dangerous without additional fastening against a solid structure, I gave up on storing that way for now. Instead, I just leave the kayaks on and I’m ready to go at anytime. Unfortunately, it also means I’ve lost garage space. Not sure what I will do in the winter, yet. The trailer itself is very solid and tracks nicely behind my car. I have no fear pulling it around but haven’t taken it on the expressway yet. Love the LED lights. Overall, extremely happy with the purchase and would do it again. Most likely would just get the all galvanized version with standard tongue but I don’t feel cheated with this version either. It has removed the only downside to kayaking. P.S. The seller I purchased from, Outdoorplay, was outstanding. I contacted them due to the delay I experienced with a couple of the boxes. It was all on FedEx but they were extremely quick to respond to email and very thorough and willing to assist in their response. It wasn’t just a canned response of ‘wait 2 weeks and if you still haven’t...’. They genuinely looked into it with Fed Ex, provided details on my shipment and offered to fix it if I didn’t get the final parts in a couple of days. Will definitely look to do business with them again. ... show more
