  • pricey but great quality with some recent changes in design
I purchased my first set of Yakima gunwale brackets and straps in 2013. (The description of the product says that it's a "rooftop canoe rack," but it's a set of gunwale brackets and straps for use with a rooftop canoe rack.) I was always impressed with the product's design and the ability to strongly and easily (no knot tying needed) attach my canoe to the cross rails on the car top carrier and to the front and rear of my vehicle. Over the last 10 years, I used this product to successfully transport my canoe for thousands of miles, sometimes in very windy conditions, and never had a problem. Due to a change in vehicles (and roof racks), I purchased the newer version of this product in 2023, and there are some design changes. The design of gunwale brackets appears to have changed for the better: they will fit just about any roof rack crossbar that exists and can be tightened-down more securely than the old brackets. The design of the strap that loops over the bow and stern carrier handles of the canoe for the bow and stern straps, however, changed from having a cam-type system (still used for the crossbar straps) to a simple plastic buckle. I have a little less faith in the plastic buckle than I did in the older cam-type system. My hope is that the design change was made for some reason other than saving money for Yakima and that the plastic buckle will not fail during transport of my canoe. ... show more

  • Performed well in stormy weather...
I loaded a 17 foot Old Town canoe on my Yakima rack - mounted to my camper shell - with the KeelOver system installed and drove 1980 miles from the San Diego area to the Salt Lake City area and back. The trip north had some strong winds, snow, hail and rain. I kept speeds at 70 on the freeway (limit is 80 in S. UT) and the boat did not move. The return trip was the real test. Extremely strong winds, mostly 90 degrees to the boat, beat on it like a jackhammer. I don't have actual wind speeds but I'd put the gusts in the 40-50 MPH range. The Las Vegas area had damaging winds two weeks earlier ( 70 MPH, power lines down, etc ) so it howls through there. The high desert in CA was no better and we took a direct hit from a "dust devil" along with sustained high winds. From Mona, UT to Victorville, CA - about 500 miles - the KeelOver took a beating. We stopped after 300 miles as the front "keepers" had moved out about an inch. Again in Victorville to make the same readjustment. I call that a successful trip. The mounting instructions clearly state to ensure the straps are installed to the INSIDE of the towers and this is why. I had 66" round bars so I had some slide room, but the straps kept the canoe in place due to their inside position. ... show more

  • Secured a 80lb canoe over a 600 mile round trip in winds and storms
This system when used correctly is incredibly stable and fairly easy to install. It kept my heavy canoe centered and secure on my forester for a long trip and I was impressed how well it did even in high winds, stop and go traffic and sudden stops, and in the rain. This system is wonderful, if you want to add a slight amount of security to it you can always close the straps (that go over the top) inside your side door which will help prevent someone from loosening the top straps and removing your canoe. On a side note, I was able to use this with the swingdaddy by Yakima too (bike carrier) and it worked really well. I've been happy with all my Yakima products and regularly recommend them. ... show more

  • Solidly secured
There's no lateral movement because of the posts and no vertical movement because of the straps. I don't even use bow and stern straps because I have good length roof racks. Highway speeds, no movement at all. Easy to attach. I'll canoe more Now that it's so easy to load it up and it's more secure than the ropes I had been using. ... show more

  • Is as advertised
Does the job, pads could be a little bigger. Plenty of straps to hold down my canoe. I use the guide lines by putting a 1 inch dowel thru the ends and placing in behind the rear latch and a short dowel under the hood. It works better than buying the other accessories. Plastic nylon construction so we will see how long it last. I wish there were locks on them as too easy to steal. ... show more

  • Does the job.
I got these to put on the factory rack on my 2016 Outback. They go on easily and hold the canoe well. They come with front and back tie down straps and 2 straps to go across side to side. Not inexpensive, but an easy solution if you want your canoe to stay put.

  • Great canoe carrier!
The carrier took a little bit of time to get mounted on the car properly. I had to reverse the mount to hold the canoe from the inside because the width of the canoe would cause the mounts to interfere with the cross bar mounts (Thule rapidaero bars on factory Honda Pilot rails). Don't slide the canoe over the rubber on the mounts as it can tear the rubber. Once the canoes in the mounts and tied down the mount holds the boat steady as a rock. Keeping your boat on the car is the whole point of getting a carrier. I wish there was a way to lock the mounts to the cross bars because it is almost too convenient for people to borrow the carrier while you paddle. ... show more

  • Workaround for narrow racks
We have a Rav4 with factory rails that get narrower toward the back. As a result, the crossbars weren't wide enough for the back keelover brackets to go on the outside of our rather beamy canoe. Our solution was to flip the brackets around to the inside of the canoe in the back. The end result is the same -- no sideways movement at all. The canoe is trapped on the outside at the front and on the inside at the back. Once it's strapped down, it's solid. ... show more
