  • Works great, but worthless instructions, no locks
I'm getting up in age and can no longer lift even my 50lb kayak up on the roof of my Sienna without another person helping, and even then, it's a difficult job I don't look forward to after a days paddling. The Hullavator Pro seemed like the solution. But the price... YIKES! I looked at the Yakima Showdown, which is almost HALF the cost of the Thule Hullavator Pro, but you have to reach up and pull OUT before you can drop down the kayak. Many of us of at retirement age simply don't have the strength to reach up that high and pull the entire weight OUT several feet before you can drop it down to load/unload. So the Yakima was out of the question for me. The Hullivator solves this with it's unique design. You simply pull down with it's gas assist struts which easily drop it down to the side of the car. Great design that works well... once you get it installed! Why only four stars? I'm a retired electronics technician. I've re-built many a car engine over the years. I'm pretty mechanically savvy and I can follow directions as well as anybody. I don't mind the Euro style multi language instructions that come with products if I could understand exactly what they wanted me to do. The instructions were sparse one liners that left you with lots of guessing and head scratching. For a product that's $50 shy of a thousand bucks, I expected a more detailed instruction manual. I eventually got frustrated and jumped on YouTube where a few good souls stepped through the process and showed me what the Thule manual lacked. At the very least, include a link in the instructions to a Thule video explaining and SHOWING us how to install their expensive product. Also... for something this expensive, and so easily removed from the roof in a matter of seconds, you absolutely need a lock. Thule doesn't provide one!! C'mon guys... how little would it affect your bottom line if you threw in couple of locks? Oh sure they sell them... cheap ones for $50! For me, that's an insult. But... they are the only game in town that does this so well, and they probably know that. So, they can ding you as much as they want. Therefore, can't in my right mind give them 5 full stars. For lack of a readable manual and a couple locks that probably would cost THEM maybe $10-15 at most, they are getting some negative feedback that will probably cost them some sales. To bad... otherwise it's a great product. ... show more

  • Work Smarter Not Harder
Not gonna lie…I’m pretty handy but the directions were intimidating as hell. I bought this as a returned item and aside from the directions, nothing was opened (everything comes in a separate sealed packet) so I’m assuming the people before me looked at the directions and noped. Once I started putting it together though it was actually way simpler than it looked. Took about 30 minutes in a downpour to fully install. I dropped it once so there was a small amount of bleeding, but nowhere near the mess it could have been. It takes a little bit of practice to open & close it, especially with the kayak on it, but after 2-3 runs I figured out the trick to it instead of happening on it as a fluke. They don’t come with locks, which at the cost of these things is absurd, so you have to buy them separately (which seems to be Thule’s marketing strategy to sell every single thing separately). They also don’t pop off easily when you’re not using them so it’s essentially a permanent fixture on your roof unless you want to go through the whole uninstall/install process every time. But overall it’s a well made, sturdy, and helpful product. I just upgraded to a larger & heavier kayak and this makes it so I can take it out solo and easily load & unload. ... show more

  • Not as easy as it seems for longer, heavier kayaks
I bought the Hullavator so I could get my kayak on the roof of my small SUV. The Hullavator provides 40lbs. of lift assistance so with a 60lb., 16’ plastic composite kayak I’m only lifting 20lbs. Sounds good, right? My plan was to install the rack myself using my existing Yakima round bars. This requires an additional adapter which is still much cheaper than buying new bars. Here’s what I learned along the way: • You cannot install the Hullavator without rails or rack that gets bolted to your car. I first learned this when I called Yakima customer service, which is great. Both Yakima and Thule have roof racks that clip into the door frame. There is nothing on either website that indicated these wouldn’t work with the Hullavator. My calls to two different rack store installers did not provide this information and I would have ordered the wrong rack system. Both were using the Yakima and Thule websites. Luckily, I called one of the nation-wide sellers/installers back the next day talking with someone else and mentioning my concerns about the Thule clip on the rack system with the Hullavator. Then I learned that the Thule system also needed roof mounted rails or racks for the Hullavator. • I ordered and had installed Honda roof rails, $600. The Hullavator is $799. Thule rack system, $720. This was still cheaper than a dealer installed kayak rack system that had no lift assistance. • When I drove home and into the garage there was a thump, thump on the roof. The rack arms are too tall for the garage opening, just lightly skimming the arms. Luckily, no damage. The arms can be swung down to the load position or unclipped from the rack and Hullavator base to get in the garage. • I am ready to try out loading my kayak. Huge problem. I cannot lift the kayak up to the height to place in the Hullavator arms. I can straight arm carry the kayak short distances but cannot lift it up. I tried sliding the bow in the back thinking I could slide it. That begins to torque the arm. Also, because my kayak is 16’ I can’t angle it enough without my kayak getting the car. Yes, I can get help lifting it in and out but my goal is to be self-sufficient as I mostly kayak by myself. • I ordered 2 collapsible saw horses from Amazon. I can lift one end onto a sawhorse and then the other and roll the kayak into the arms of the Hullavator. While this now works, this is not the easy solution that I thought it would be. I imagine a 12’ or under kayak would work best with this system. ... show more
