  • Getting too old to lift up the kayak..
Let's face it. Getting old stinks. I bought the saddles but had a different purpose in mind. So, getting older meant not being able to lift the kayak onto the SUVs roof. And not to mention how it would of been even more difficult with a fully rigged canoe. Stay with me. I decided to use the saddles on a trailer as "bunks" The idea worked perfectly. The saddles were the exact width of the trailer frame, and the 2 diff sized boots meant that I didn't need to go to the hardware store. Everything fit perfectly. I've had them installed as you see for about a month or so and have traveled a good amount of miles. No issues, no backing out of any kind. Now the saddles are holding a 13' canoe and they they're working perfectly. Highly recomend! ... show more

  • Perfection
These kayak racks arrived fast and do just what they were intended. Long trip and they didn’t budge or falter once. Ease of load and unloading with how they swivel is a nice feature too.

  • "Powder coat" finish not very good.
These arrived in a box without much padding. My initial look was that they appeared to be of good quality, but then I took a closer look. The "powder coat" finish was chipped, allowing the metal underneath to show. Given the price, this is not something that makes me want to return them since I can touch up the finish. However, it probably shows that the metal was not adequately cleaned and prepared before the coating was applied. Shipping should not have damaged a good quality powder coat finish. Second thing is that the metal parts are aluminum, so the finish is not quite as critical as it would be for steel parts. I'm glad that I looked and chose this one for that reason. The product description at the top is accurate. However, the product description farther down the page gave me cause for concern because it described the metal as "powder coated steel." Whoever proofread the page missed that one. The brackets fit the crossbars on our Nissan Frontier just fine. We have a sit-in kayak, so I put it up on the rack upside-down so rain would not get in. It works just as well this way. Perhaps the feature I find most annoying is the strap. It is good quality and I like it. However, when run around the kayak, running across underneath means the strap vibrates when driving down the road. I tried looping it around the crossbar on the way around and that helped. I have not tried putting a twist in it on the bottom side, but I will try that also and see which way works best. Bottom line: Even with the finish flaws, I am pleased with this product and I think I can recommend it as a product to be considered when purchasing a kayak/canoe/paddleboard rack. ... show more

  • Great for heavy kayaks
I have this mounted on my trucks ladder rack. It’s fairly easy to slide the boat into place or to take it off. The boat sits nicely on its chines in the rack and it doesn’t deform the bottom. The straps are nice and heavy duty and I like how they go through the rack itself. (Kayak is the Old Town Predator PDL/Sportsman Bigwater 132) ... show more

  • Good Solution for Fishing Kayaks
We have two fishing kayaks that were just a little too big for the j-racks. The saddle rack is by far easier to load and unload these wider kayaks from the side of my truck or from the front/back. We bought extra rollers for ease of loading, which we have not had to use yet. I recommend ensuring all bolts are tight before each transport, as one of the racks slipped out and shifted our kayak near sideways once while we were driving. It was only the funny looks from other drivers that made us stop to look. Our tie downs kept it from falling. It seems each time we use them, two or three bolts become a bit loose. These are simple hand turning mechanism. Not sure if it is an “us” problem, or the quality of the bolts. Recently stacked two fishing kayaks together (good YouTube how to videos on this) and felt secure driving with them on a windy/hilly/bumpy 3+ hour drive in the saddle rack. They were secure and safe both ways. Side note: the saddle rack doesn’t make noise like the j-racks do when driving (unloaded), which is another plus for me. ... show more

  • Doesn’t work well with round bars
The clamp mechanism doesn’t clamp well for round bars. Would not recommend unless you have flat bar roof rack

  • Easy to install, hard to keep in place
I've had this kayak saddle for a few weeks now, I use it for my 75lb kayak of which it does well. It took maybe 30 minutes to install then another 10 to adjust to fit the kayak. After the first trip out I found that even though I had tightened the brackets the saddle comes with down to the point they were bending a little, the saddle mounts would still slide a little, enough to cause the kayak to drop between them when pulled to the side. I ended up tightening the bolts down as far as they could physically be turned without a wrench or pliers and so far they still slowly slide out of place, usually when loading and unloading the kayak. The sliding is small enough now to where it is still safe to use. ALSO, if you get this mount system don't bother with the tie downs that come with it. I tried to use them, but they were too short to reach across to the other side of the kayak so I bought 20ft tie downs instead which work much better.-for reference the kayak is a lifetime Teton pro 116 ... show more

  • Good for the price
These are fairly easy to use and install. Only problem is that on long road trips the nuts have a tendancy to loosen and then the cradles will slide. If you buy these be sure to make sure they are tightened up at each stop. Having your kayak slide off of the cradle at 80 mph is a little unnerving. Always secure your kayak at the front and the back when traveling at high speeds. I was able to tell that my kayak had moved by the slack and tension on my front tie downs. ... show more

  • All is fine - just the bolts are facing your roof.
The product is a good product. Serves its purpose. The belt being fead through the stands itself gives you ability to "cocoon" the kayak between the strap and the rubber parts of the stand. JUST!!!! The bolts are facing the roof and while driving they may be coming in contact with your roof, damage the roof and make vibration noise. I had to stop and purchase shorter metric carriage bolts. The heads of those bolts were bigger but they did it for that trip and back. ... show more

  • OK but too much Plastic, returned!
This kayak bracket was half decent but I was hoping for it to be more aluminum, the foundation pieces were plastic which I didn’t trust with a roof mounted kayak at highway speeds. Also the straps were missing?

  • Fit a 2016 Honda CRV.
Not my first attempt to find kayak saddles that would fit onto the Honda CRV crossbars, but the only one that DID fit. The saddles have a rubberized part that sits between the saddle and the top of the bar. This does not want to slip along the bar, keeping the kayak right where you want it, Even with the hold downs all loosened, it holds on, but will move when you push it, a good feature. It's set into the top clamp instead of just laying on the top of the bar, so it is held firmly with the top clamp The bottom of the clamp is coated so it doesn't want to slip either. The tighten down knobs are big enough to be able to easily use, but not so big as to get in the way of the tie down straps. The straps themselves have a piece of material at the buckle that protects the car surface from being scratched by the buckle. The saddles themselves where they support the kayak are also rubber and flex to the shape of the kayak. My kayak is wider in the middle than in the front and I could position each saddle to give maximum distributed support. With J-bars you don't have that option as my friends show me, but they use the J-bars so they can put two kayaks on their vehicle. I have just the one. I had planned on using a J-bar rack for the kayak. With a J-bar you need to pick the entire kayak up, over your head and put it down on the J-bars. With the saddles you can leave the back end on the ground and lift the front end up onto the CRV. A hint I found online is to get a small rubberised rug and put it on the vehicle and then put the front of the kayak onto the rug. This protects the vehicle but more importantly you can more easily slide the kayak onto the saddles . This makes it an easy one person job to get the kayak on or off the vehicle. The goods came packaged like a mummy, very protected. ... show more

  • Holds securely
In fact, it it holds too securely in a way. I found I had to place terry cloth rags/washcloths/towels on the two rear cradles so that I can slide the hull of my boat up onto the car. Without them the rubber of the cradles grabs the boat and won't let it slide. Ultimately, this is a good thing... very good thing as far as I'm concerned. I am overall very pleased with this purchase, and it helped me transport my boat from north Florida all the way to Washington DC with no issues during the trip. I've dropped one star on the review (specifically under sturdiness) only for the straps that came with this cradle. One of the straps, after the one trip, became torn and frayed, I'm guessing from the metal of the cradle it was routed through. In my opinion, this is a very minor complaint, as I paid for the cradles not the straps. I have plenty of straps of various kinds, and I prefer to use ratcheting straps to secure the boat directly to the roof rails of my car, rather then just to the cradles/crossbars. The cradle itself holds my boat securely without placing stress on the keel, which is what I wanted. Very happy with this product overall. ... show more

I bought additionally bow and stern ropes and loops. When no kayak on board the saddles, we never know they are there, quiet and firmly attached to factory car rack.
