Top Amazon Reviews

  • It's been a year since my purchase, and it's still worthy of 5 stars.
I have been using the Asus F1 projector for the past year now, so I thought it would be helpful for others to read an in-depth review of my experience so far. ***Why I chose the Asus F1 In my search for a new projector last year, I had some specific needs that led me to the F1. First, I wanted to switch to an LED projector, so I wouldn’t have to worry about changing the bulb or the colors and brightness fading over time (as with my old Optoma DLP projector). Next, I needed a short-throw projector for a somewhat narrow screening room, so a 120” image could be projected from 7 feet away. Finally, I needed horizonal keystoning or lens shifting, so I could position the projector from the side of the viewers. Surprisingly, my options for a 1080p LED short-throw projector with both vertical & horizontal keystone adjustment were almost zero with the exception of the Asus F1. (This was last year, so I am not sure what’s available now.) Although less critical to my decision-making, I welcomed the F1’s smaller and lighter form giving it portability, its built-in Harmon Kardon 2.1 channel audio, which includes an 8W subwoofer, and its quieter operation. (LED projectors don’t have a heat-generating bulb that requires constant cooling, so they’re generally quieter and have a quicker start up time.) Not to mention, the appearance of the F1 stands out from the generic designs of most projectors. ***The H-K effect Before my purchase, I read some mixed reactions to the F1. Perhaps some people have simply been looking at the 1200 Lumens on the spec sheet and are immediately labeling it as dim and underpowered, while completely overlooking something known as the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch (H-K) effect. Specific to LEDs, the H-K effect creates a higher perceived brightness due to its increased color saturation, higher luminous efficiency, and less color and brightness decay. In other words, 1200 Lumens on an LED projector is brighter than 1200 Lumens on a DLP projector. On the negative side though, LEDs tend to be more expensive the DLPs. (Please google the H-K effect for more info.) ***Online reviews Nick Rego’s review of the F1 on TechRadar is a particularly weak one. He makes no mention of it being an LED projector in his article, not once. As a result of this huge oversite, all of the benefits associated with LEDs – longer lamp life, cooler and quieter operation, improved color saturation, and higher perceived brightness – are completely absent from his discussion. Instead, he labels it an expensive “Petite Powerhouse” and recommends some DLP projectors with a higher lumen count. In contrast to TechRadar’s sloppy reporting, Codrut Neagu’s F1 review on Digital Citizens provided a more thorough and balanced review with many supportive images. I would check that one out – it helped me move forward with my purchase. ***Amazon reviews Additionally, I checked out some of the F1 reviews on Amazon, and they’ve also varied. One reviewer wrote, “Colors pop! In a darkened room I am now getting a 140 inch cinema quality experience. When I watch a classic three strip Technicolor film I feel I'm seeing it the way it was meant to be seen.” I completely agree! The F1 produces some large, impressive images without going to an actual theater. The same reviewer further wrote, “I find LED projectors are mostly under $200 toys or extremely expensive professional machines. This fills the void nicely.” Exactly right, once again. Another Amazon reviewer mentioned that the volume coming from the F1’s speaker is too low. As for my setup, I do have the volume raised higher than other devices, but it’s not maxed out. I suppose it could be an issue if you’re screening for a group of people or you like your audio played loudly. If that’s the case, you can always pair it with an external speaker or amp. Most projectors don’t have their own internal subwoofer, so I think the F1’s speakers are rather exceptional. (Also, there’s a video posted by a different reviewer that shows the F1 making a strong electric noise. This hasn’t been my experience – I can only hear a fan lightly humming on mine.) ***Suggestion It’s worth mentioning that I usually use the F1 for watching films in the evening with low to moderate ambient light, so if your viewing habits include daytime viewing with moderate to high ambient light, 1200 Lumens may not be enough for you, H-K effect or not. I suggest using the “projector throw distance calculator” on Projector Central’s website to determine brightness in relation to projector distance/screen size and ambient light. (The F1’s profile is selectable.) Certainly, there are brighter projectors out there, especially cheaper DLP ones or more expensive LED ones, but the F1’s brightness for my viewing needs is plenty, not to mention its rich colors make for a more cinematic experience. ***Minor issues Despite all of my positive experiences with the F1 this past year, a few minor operational issues have surfaced. The remote doesn’t function well – it needs to be precisely pointed at the unit to be recognized. Also, the autofocus isn’t accurate enough, so I have disabled this feature and set the focus manually; however, the next time the F1 is turned on it automatically resets the focus. This means that I must manually reset the focus each time I power it up, which is done with the unit’s subpar remote. (Many reviewers have been praising this feature, so perhaps most units are fine, or it works poorly with the horizontal keystone enabled.) I’ve also disabled the AURA RGB lighting effect from the sides of the projector, but that too often reactivates when I turn the F1 back on. Lastly, to turn on the F1, sometimes I need to flip my AC power strip switch off and back on, and then press the power button on F1’s remote – it doesn’t happen often though, perhaps once or twice a month. (Once the F1 is turned on, there are no issues with it remaining on or turning off.) All things considered, these are all very minor issues/inconveniences, which have had no real impact on my viewing experience. ***4k or 1080p? With more UHD titles becoming more available, it would have been nice if this were a 4k projector, but I am still very pleased with how well the F1 displays 1080p blu rays. Again, I had very specific needs in a projector that weren’t available in 4k at the time of my purchase (LED, short-throw, horizontal keystone), which may still be the case. Since most of my films are still on blu ray, I didn’t mind selecting a 1080p projector. ***Closing thoughts As I first mentioned, I’ve been using this projector regularly for the past year, so I’ve tried to provide some thorough feedback to help others make an informed decision when choosing their next projector. In my opinion, there hasn’t been enough meaningful feedback on the F1, resulting in a few dissatisfied customers on Amazon. Certainly, there are cheaper, brighter options than the F1 if you want to go the DLP route and are flexible with your viewing environment and projector placement – it all depends on your specific needs. As for me, the F1 is nearly a perfect fit for my home. Good luck! ... show more

  • Great picture, weak speakers.
Great picture, can watch in a room with a light on or some ambient light. I set it up about 8 feet from wall and have a 9 foot screen to watch. The thing keeping it from five stars is the sound. I have a ViewSonic projector, a lot smaller, also with Harmon Kardon speakers, but that is a lot louder than this. In fact the small Viewsonic at half volume is as loud as this at full volume. Surprising because this is allegedly using the same speaker manufacturer. I have has laptops and tablets louder than this. It is probably worse outdoors, at least here the sound bounces off the walls. ... show more

  • Finally a great mid level LED projector
What a great projector. I have an LG LED projector with about 25,000 hours on it that is starting to fade and now showing dead pixels. I tried the Crenova LED and it's OK for casual use, but it appears to use a white light source. The colors look washed out. I believe the Asus uses an RGB light source. Colors pop! In a darkened room I am now getting a 140 inch cinema quality experience. When I watch a classic three strip Technicolor film I feel I'm seeing it the way it was meant to be seen. If you are considering this projector, a room with low light levels is very important. The remote is a little wonky and it has no Bluetooth audio out. I find LED projectors are mostly under $200 toys or extremely expensive professional machines. This fills the void nicely. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • Excellent except remote, little pricey
Great projector EXCEPT the remote which doesn’t seem to ever get a very good signal. Works half the time. Love the projector - just not sure if I could have gotten the same or similar quality for less money.

  • Great product!
This projector is brighter than I expected for an LED bulb. The auto-focus and auto-keystone are great bonus features.
