I am psyched that I came across these coco coir bricks. I don’t have a reptile (at least not one that would need this), but I do use coco coir in the substate for my bazillion plants. These are 1.3 pound bricks, and I would estimate that each brick breaks down into about a gallon of soil (mine was still very dry and dusty, it may fill more fully rehydrated, and I didn’t break them all down). But what drew me to these was the “low salt” angle. I can’t say what the requirements or tolerances to salts for reptiles, but as a potting medium you have to be careful about salt buildup in your substrates because it will kil your plants quickly. With the amendments necessary for planting in coco coir (it’s an inert medium, you have to add fertilizers and aeration), these bricks will give me enough soil to make a bunch of plants happy.

I picked this up mainly for reptile bedding. The compressed bricks expand easily once soaked, and it doesn’t take long before it turns into a usable, fluffy substrate. It does a good job holding moisture without getting overly soggy, and it helps keep odors under control better than I expected. I’ve noticed it stays fairly clean and doesn’t break down too quickly with regular use in an enclosure. The texture is soft enough for small animals while still being firm enough to hold structure, which makes it feel natural for habitat setups. It’s also convenient to store since the bricks don’t take up much space until you’re ready to use them. For just over $4 per brick, you get a lot of "soil". I prefer these new coconut husk soil alternatives anyways, as they are much cleaner and easier to handle and manage. You don't need to just use this for a terrarium - I use it as soil for my balcony mini garden. Just make sure you add a lot of water and be patient, as they take a lot of time to seep through everything. For me, I just put enough water to reach the top of the top of the brick, then let all the water seep through, then I know it's ready. Once they feel mushy enough, you can take it out chunks at a time, then break it down further before applying to wherever you need them. There is no odor, it smells like nothing, or at most what you'd think died coconut husk would smell like (nothing).

I actually use this for gardening; it's a great soil amendment to make your potting mixes more fluffy and aerated. The bricks fluff up nicely with water and I like that they are smaller bricks. The last time I bought a giant 10-12lb brick it was pretty unwieldy as I didn't need to use it all at once and it was difficult to chip off pieces. I recommend wearing a mask while handling it dry if you have any respiratory issues. However, the price seems a bit higher than it needs to be. I wouldn't pay more than $3 per brick in the future. Also, the listing erroneously states that you will receive 2 bricks but you get 5 as listed in the title.

I love this coconut fiber substrate so much more than sand or reptile carpet. It’s honestly been the perfect bedding for my bearded dragons. It’s easy to clean, holds up well, and makes maintenance a lot simpler overall. One of the biggest surprises is how well it helps with odor — it actually absorbs the smell after they go, which is a huge plus. It does come super condensed, so you’ll need to break it apart before using it, but that’s not a big deal at all. Once it’s set up, it works beautifully and lasts. If you’re looking for a natural, effective, and easy-to-manage bedding option for reptiles, I highly recommend this. Total upgrade from sand and carpet!
