  • Fresh Tasting Water!
Style: 6-Year Whole House Water Filter
When we recently moved into our home, we switched from well to city water. The chlorine taste and smell of the city water was terrible! I was buying cases of water to drink and it was adding up. We decided to purchase this whole house filtration system after reading all of the great reviews. My husband installed it himself in less than a day and instantly we could tell a difference in the quality of our water. There is absolutely no smell and it tastes so amazingly fresh! The size of this device is very compact and fits in a convenient area that's not in the way. In six years, we will purchase another!! 😊 ... show more

  • +Has metal connectors, -1/2 inch ports, shutoff and +bypass on handle.
Style: Pre/Post Filter + Bypass Valve
+ Has metal female thread connectors vs solid plastic threading. Has shut off, bypass and thru filter selection on handle. - reduces water flow thru less than 1/2 inch ports. & the bracket is weak so I used oversized washers to bolster it. fyi:I added a water regulator (on 3/4 inch copper lines) so psi is less but workable. Used 1807 astm pipe and parts (the most common size). Shark uses its own pex size for crimping. I avoided it. Their product is good, but I chose a more universal size-1807 astm. I set up a manual bypass of filter system in case of a quicha event. The Lower connection w the 1/2 inch white pex is for flushing filter when new or when the water company sends excess debris when working on street lines. Not necessary if you flush out to connected exterior faucet. Using pex w crimps was a joy. (vs soldering) You can still rotate pipe after crimping. I'll let you know how the filter works in a few months...maybe. The sediment filter dropped the hard water count by about 10%. Less junk for my kidneys. (the carbon filter on the fridge also reduced the hard water count) ... show more

  • It takes some practice
Style: 6-Year Whole House Water Filter
I put 2 of these in, in 2 different houses about 2 months apart October to December 2022. I also installed the Descaling unit and 4.5" filer housing with active carbon filter. All items arrived quickly both times and in good condition. Fair warning, the Carbon filter unit is heavy and I bet my Amazon driver hates me sense I ordered 2. Both systems are on public utility water. One system has a water hardness of ~120mg/L (Moderate) and the other has a water hardness of ~260mg/L(Very High) according to local provided municipal water reports. Both system's reports claim to have low TDS but also have rust due to old municipal infrastructure. In both cases we noticed the water felt noticeably better after installation. Will update on status and effectiveness in the future. With the first system I took my time and used the included valves and PVC plumbing and adapted to the existing house PEX system. I fought with leaks in the PVC joints and had to adapt to NPT before adapting back to PEX to tie into house plumbing, which required more fittings and increased chance of leaks. Total install time was about 12 hours or so and ~$250 in extra parts. For the second system I adapted straight to PEX, installed breakable joints and PEX valves on both sides of the units for ease of replacement. The 2nd install was 6 hours and cost less than $150 in additional parts. Some suggestions -These units are short (~30" tall), if you are installing them I suggest you put them on a raised, well supported platform making them easier to work with. If its in a finished area put them in a drain pan. - Put in a bypass valve to allow you to isolate the units in event of leaks and to aid in replacing them after the 6 years. - If you don't already have PVC Plumbing than don't use the included PVC fittings. I tried it both ways and it was easier for me, and cheaper, to adapt to the existing house plumbing rather than install the PVC valves/pipe a then adapt to the house plumbing. - Follow the instructions and purge before installing. - Highly recommend following the manufacturer suggestion and installing the canister pre-filter. Doing the math including salt and filters the cost of putting in the system myself (~$850) was nearly equal with installing a salt based water softener myself which would not have included a carbon filter. This would have required extra plumbing and electrical work, also hauling salt down into 2 basements 2 times per year. Quoted cost (at one location) for having a service put in a full system was $1700 (single tank ion exchange, pre-filter, and whole house carbon filter). To have provide salt, change filters, and service the system was an additional ~$30 per month for the first 2 years, higher after that. Both houses would have required additional plumbing cost for the purge lines and electrical outlets to be added for the water softeners. If this system works as it seems to then the cost is significantly cheaper. ... show more

  • The best transparent filter housing for drinking water
Style: Pre/Post Filter + Bypass Valve
I replaced an old non-transparent filter housing with this AO Smith transparent version. Being able to see the state of the filter is a huge convenience. The filter it comes with is a basic sediment filter, which is okay but not ideal for drinking water. I replaced it with a .5 micron filter which is ideal for drinking water. ... show more

  • Screwing and Unscrewing the Filter Holder is Impossibly Difficult
Style: Pre/Post Filter + Timer
I replaced an older filter with the AO Smith model. I had changed the old filter system many times without difficulty: release the pressure; rotate the filter housing off; put in a new filter; screw the tank back into place. Because the shutoff valves and plumbing were already in place it wasn't difficult to connect the AO Smith filter holder to the water system. With the filter cap connected, I attempted to screw the clear filter tank into the holder. The threads were extremely difficult to align properly. I disconnected the plumbing and placed the filter cap carefully upside down to see what was wrong. Even with perfect alignment, the filter housing was very difficult to turn. The threads were obviously not well manufactured to match. I used some fine steel wool to make sure there no imperfections in the threads and finally got the tank to screw into the cap, but still with considerable difficulty. I re-connected the unit to the water supply. Unfortunately when the system is installed, the tank must be screwed up into the holder, so getting the alignment correct is basically impossible. It was past the return window so it's now in the trash and I'm looking for a better-manufactured filter system. SOLUTION: As soon as your whole-house filter arrives, open the box and see how easily the parts go together. If they don't screw together easily, return it. PS. This system also did not have a groove for the o-ring seal. Another ding against this product. ... show more
