  • Dutch oven
Size: 7-Quart
I brought this Dutch oven to make a pot roast and roast a whole chicken. I was very impressed with the size, it cooks well and you must maintain the care of the pot.

  • Good Cast Iron
Size: 2-Quart
I'm in my fifties. I'm from the south. I've been cooking with cast iron since before I was strong enough to lift it. This is a good pot. I liked the 2-quart pot so much that I bought a second one. Now I have two. Both pots were from the warehouse, discounted because they had been returned. They both work flawlessly. I have had cheap cast iron from family dollar and upscale cast iron from Cabellas. This pot from Amazon is mid range. Its not as nice as my great grandmother's pre-WW1 pot, but its about as good as Lodge. I like this size for cooking rice (2-cups dry, 4 cups water, 20 minutes on low after boiling). It makes better rice than you've ever had from a rice cooker and it keeps the rice warm for at least an hour without burning. Just leave the lid on and take it off the stove after cooking. It's also perfect for cooking dried beans. Whether you cook plain beans or add bacon or ham hocks (or turkey necks) for seasoning, the beans cook fast and evenly. They do not have to be watched every minute. On medium-low, covered, they're tender in an hour (assuming you soaked them overnight). I can cook beans in one pot, rice in the second pot, and dinner requires almost zero attention. Since I do a lot of simmering in my pots, they require regular care. I wash them with a scrub brush and a dab of Dawn dish detergent. I have never put one in the dishwasher. I think that would be foolish. After washing, I let them drip dry for a few minutes and then dry with a dish towel. Finally I rub cooking fat on both the lid and pot with a paper towel. I use vegetable oil. My grandmother used Crisco. My great-grandmother used lard. My mother didn't use cast iron, she preferred teflon. In my experience the type of cooking fat really does not matter. When the pot becomes rusty, as it inevitably will, there is a simple solution. Rub it liberally with the fat of your choice and cook it in the oven on low overnight. Voila! Instant no-stick coating. Cast iron is the very best cookware ever created. Even cheap cast iron lasts your and your grandchildren's lifetime. Just rub it lightly with fat after washing and then season it a couple of times a year. It never wears out and it adds iron to your diet which is especially nice for pregnant and nursing moms. The 2-quart pot from Amazon is reasonably priced for a pot that will last at least 2-lifetimes and its good enough quality to justify its price. If your pot is rusting, that's your fault and you have the power to correct it. If you don't, then that's on you, not the pot. By all means give it away to somebody who will appreciate it. I've gotten several of my favorite cast iron pieces that way.😁 ... show more

  • Perfect for Bread
Size: 2-Quart
I bought this to make the bread in the book "Bittman Bread" by Mark Bittman and Kerri Conan, which I also bought here on Amazon. This Dutch Oven has been working perfectly for the last 6 months of baking. As a bonus, it's much less expensive that the same size Lodge pot. I've got a 5-1/2 quart regular and a 7-1/2 quart enameled both from Lodge and use them all the time for stuff, but I only use this 2 qt for the bread, usually more than once a week. It's great. Look up that "Bittman Bread" book and buy it from Amazon (I don't think you can insert links in the review), then definitely buy this Dutch Oven. I highly recommend both. ... show more

  • Amazing Dutch!
I've been on a cast iron craze recently. I think back to college when I'd watch Yan Can Cook, and Chef Martin Yan would lean over into the pan and say, "It's got to be hot hot!" I finally realize what he means after all these years of cooking. Heat makes for awesome cooking. It gives wok hei. It makes the difference between a juicy, seared steak vs a dry, tough one. When I discovered this secret, I was like a kid in a candy store, picking this cast iron, that cast iron, another cast iron, please. When I bought the 5 quart Amazon Basics dutch oven, I figured that at the low price, if it came with issues, it wouldn't be an expensive loss. I was impressed with the packaging. Amazon did not want this pot to break, so it had form fitted Styrofoam everywhere, pot and cover nicely separated. There was a nice Amazon Basics logo on the bottom of the pot. Upon close inspection, I thought I found a hairline crack on the cover. It seems when they casted it, part of the iron folded over on itself and formed the line. Someone then took a sander and sanded part of it slightly. What I thought was the hairline crack was actually the edge of the polished surface. The next day, I cooked bacon in it. I fired up the Camp Chef Explorer stove and cooked two pieces of bacon in the pot. I also flipped the cover upside down and cooked two pieces of bacon in it. The cover makes a very nice ad-hoc skillet. After it cooled, I inspected the cover again, and it is not a hairline crack. The bacon seasoning started covering up both the polished and unpolished surface into a nice, uniform seasoning. The following day, I made chicken stew in it. While carmelizing the onions and carrots, I made another nice discovery. The flat bottom lends itself nicely to efficient stir frying. Sometimes, in a wok, I come across the problem of the bamboo spatula not being able to get under the food, so I end up chasing the food up the sides of the wok unable to flip it. The part of this dutch oven where the bottom meets the sides creates a nice angle that pushes the food onto my bamboo spatula for easy flipping. Yesterday, I took it to my parents' house and made artisan bread in it. Everyone was impressed with the crispiness of the bread crust. Everyone came back for seconds. Needless to say, I no longer have the dutch oven. My mom liked it so much I gave it to her. It's almost Mother's Day, and who would say no to their mom? *ahem* Amazon...another cast iron, please! LOL PS: The lid fits a 10 inch skillet but not a 10.25 inch skillet. It falls into a 10.25 skillet. ... show more

  • Very good product except one
Size: 2-Quart
I'v long heard that cast iron pan makes great food, but I didn't use it often because most pans are shallow and oil easily splashes out all over the cooktop. This pot has some depth and it's small, not very heavy, that's why I want to try it. It proves the folklore. I had sauteed sliced pork, and not completely thawed chicken leg quarters. They taste chewy and with good aroma. Before I always sauteed meat with cast aluminum non-stick pot and I feel like I'm chewing some kind of hemp rope. This pot would have had a five star from me but it missed one because the manufacturer only pre-seasoned the outside of the pot, not the inside. Can you believe it? The outside of the pot looks oily and shiny, doesn't rust. But the inside will rust if water is not wiped off completely and not oiled. The pictures of rusting that other people show are true. But that's OK, I am willing to fix it myself for the sake of great food. I'v used this for 4 months now. It's difficult to maintain and takes time to maintain. I then bought an enameled cast iron dutch oven. But I came back to this one because the enameled pot doesn't produce same aroma. Making sauteed pork or chicken in this little oven is so easy and tastes so good. The amount of meat I ate has at least doubled since I bought this thing. I just put sauteed pork and some salad leaves on top of ramen noodle and pour hot water in, it's a super quick and descent meal. ... show more

  • Large capacity, stick resistant, heat retention and distribution, no enamel to chip or discolor.
Size: 7-Quart
I got tired of enameled cast iron Dutch ovens discoloring or chipping here and there. The last straw was glaze chipping off the bottom and getting into the food after treating that last pan like it was my first-born child. So, why not try raw cast iron? The first Thing I noticed about this cast iron Dutch oven is the rough surface. I was worried that the texture might inhibit food release and cause sticking. That is not the case in any way. Rather, this is probably the most stick resistant piece of cast iron I've had, enameled or not, with the exception of an antique family heirloom Griswold skillet. I don't know what it is but maybe the texture actually prevents food from sticking. What I know is browning chicken skin side down is easier in this than in just about any other (PFOA-free) cookware I've tried. For the price, I took a chance, and so far after about a month and a handful of uses, am extremely satisfied. ... show more

  • Does it make a difference in my cooking?
Size: 7-Quart
Product seems to be very well seasoned. I say that because after receiving it I followed the instructions and just washed it with hot water but i did put a tiny bit of soap since it was first time out of box. Then asninstructed i dried it using paper towel amd coated it with small amount of veggie oil. As I wipeit I did notice a very bery fainted stain of black wish for me it was nothing to worry about. I have not cooked anythjng with it yet so will give another review once I do. Final note, the weight is mot so bad. ... show more
