This was a great value for the money when it comes to retractable awnings. And, the awning, once installed seems to work great. However, be prepared for some fits and stops when you are assembling. I would classify myself as a fairly advanced DIYer and it took me the better part of a day and a half to get this unit properly assembled, mounted and operational. I would say the two main issues with the assembly instructions and online videos are 1) a general vagueness with a process that actually requires a significant level of detail--like exactly which way to orientate brackets, the motor, etc. (they're written like "just insert this into that and shazam! you're done..." but that's not how it works in practice) and 2) the written instructions not matching the model of the unit we received. One other issue we had was the awning itself was two entirely different shades of brown--like one half was brown and one half was more maroon. Customer service was super helpful and sent out an entirely new replacement fabric within a week. I have found customer service very helpful. Anyway, this is the most economical and quality awning you will find. However, this is not a beginner's project. Either hire an awning expert or take your time and expect some frustration.

My deck gets very hot in the summer time, so, for years, I thought about an awning. When I saw all of the options for the Aleko Motorized awning, I was sold. I selected a 10' x 8' motorized awning in Gray. It arrived faster than expected and in perfect condition. All of the parts were there and perfectly packaged. Prior to purchasing, I read the reviews which mentioned that the instructions were bad. I didn't pay much attention to it. BUT those comments were accurate. First, there was NO INSTRUCTION MANUAL, in the box. I got mine by calling Aleko support who gave me a link to a PDF Manual. They also told me to watch the online installation videos. Quite frankly, neither helped. I'm an experienced do-it-yourselfer (thankfully), but I found the manual and the videos really lacking. I assembled and mounted the unit and, as soon as it was up and I started to deploy and retract it, I knew it was wrong. I had to take it down, fix the assembly and re-hang it. It was frustrating. That said, now that it's installed and working properly, I am very pleased with the quality and functionality. I think the material used for the awning will last a long time (and, with what I know now, I think it will be easy to replace it, if it's ever necessary. So, overall, I'm pleased with the purchase. If they'd spend just a little time fixing the instructions and create some clear videos, this could easily get to 4 or 5 stars.

The Aleko installation video is horrible!! They don't say a word & it runs in warp speed. You can't follow any of it. The written instructions were ok but lots of details missing. The manual showed the motor on the left side but ours came with it installed on the right. We were told by tech support it could be on either side...however...the remote would have to operate in the opposite direction (up is down, down is up) and the slot for the hand crank is attached to it so having it on the left meant the slot was upside down and therefore couldn't use it. We had to put the motor back on the right. The bolts used to put into the brackets once the bar is attached were too big & we couldn't get them in...had to buy smaller ones. Remote didn't work so will have to call & get a new one. Don't remove the safety sleeves from the arms until you've locked them into the arm bars...very important! The caps used at the end of the front bar & plastic & are supposed to screw in but there's nothing to screw them into...we're going to glue them on. Quality of the product is nice & James in tech support is fabulous.

Contractor. I've put up maybe a dozen awnings, all were pre assembled. This one assembled easily, the motor was easy to figure out, plenty of adjustment, fabric seems heavy duty. I suggest you be familiar with awnings before attempt to assemble one yourself. Most reviews complaining of 'poor directions' were probably just unfamiliar with awnings. This was easy. I will definitely be a return customer.

Material had a burn mark on it, got a replacement over 3 weeks later after multiple emails. Motor only turned one way, that had to be replaced... The overall awning is solid and the instructions weren't horrible. You can even watch the video on youtube, which helps a lot. I was just upset, that now a month later, I just now have all the replacements so it works properly. I do have to give a shout out to their tech support group. The guy who helped me troubleshoot the motor was great and super patient. Unfortunately it had to be replaced, but overall, I still like the awning. Make sure you are mounting this into the studs and you have multiple people to help put it up; it is really heavy!!! (We had to add a 2x6 brace on the outside of our home, since the studs didn't line up with the awning mounts) Also, I totally recommend buying the ceiling mount brackets. They are actually multi-functional and much more sturdy than the basic mounts you get. (you need 3 of them for the 12x10 awning.)
