  • Solid NAS drive, no complaints at all
Capacity: 6TB Style: 128 MB Cache
Threw this in my home server build and it detected immediately on the first boot with zero issues. Been running it for months now and temperatures look fine, no weird sounds, totally stable. If you are setting up a RAID array this is the obvious pick since the NAS specific firmware actually matters and is not just marketing. ... show more

  • So Reliable, I Forgot They Were Even Alive
Reliability: I’ve been using the WD60EFRX 6TB drives in my QNAP TS-453A for just shy of 10 years, and honestly? I completely forgot they were still the original drives. That’s how quietly and reliably they’ve been doing their job—like the NAS equivalent of a dependable old friend who never calls attention to themselves but always shows up on time. They’ve been spinning 24/7 in a RAID 5 array, handling backups, media, and day-to-day tasks without a hiccup. Not a single SMART warning, not a whimper of protest, and no weird noises—just smooth, silent duty like clockwork. I only realized how old they were when I started planning my upgrade, and it hit me: these things have been running since before streaming 4K was even a thing. Western Digital nailed it with this one. If I could buy them a retirement watch, I would. But since I’m replacing them with the newer WD Red 10TB (WD101EFBX), I figured the least I could do is write a glowing eulogy—I mean, review. ... show more

  • Western Digital Is A-OK!
Capacity: 6TB Style: 128 MB Cache
I love the HDs from Western Digital but, on this occasion, I received a drive packed in only a lightweight bubble pack with small bubbles shipped in a non-cushioned plastic bag. Although the drive appears to be in good physical and working condition, the HDD controller board could have been easily damaged. After many years of hard drive shipments, this is the first to not be shipped in a well cushioned box. I have already reported it to Customer Service so hopefully future shipments will be done properly. ... show more

  • WDEFZX-68AWUNO Died In 14 Months
Capacity: 4TB Style: 128 MB Cache
Update: I finally was able to figure out how to get drive registered to get an RMA number. Once I figured this out everything else went smoothly. Then I got an app to check the HD again and it seems my problem was a previous power outage. Having never had this problem before, I wasn't expecting it. Anyway, I'm still a WD fanboy. Their return website is relatively painless once you figure it out. I rerated the HD to reflect these new developments. For WD40EFZX-68AWUNO... What a pain! Went to WD site to fill out warranty forms and it's not working right either. After a few crapped out hard drives from Seagate several years ago I went with WD. EVERY drive I have in service is now Western Digital. I put two of these in a Synology NAS and "drive 1" went kaput after 14 months. Buying another (68C6CNO) and hopefully WD will come through on the warranty if I can get it completed. WD warranty is most times pretty painless so I'm not really livid it's just that this eats up a couple of hours of the day when you're not set up to make returns. Oh well, things go wrong. ... show more

  • It works fine, was great value
Capacity: 6TB Style: 128 MB Cache
I think every hard drive (model and brand) has its share of low reviews and its loyal partisans and detractors. There are several brands I favor and a couple I avoid. Happy with this one. Passed its full surface test, installed in external enclosure and USB-attached to my Synology NAS (formatted EXT4), happily ate the few dozen GB of files I loaded. I leave it powered off except when in use, so hope for a long life. Still, everything is also backed up to old HDDs pulled from retired equipment: less reliable but free and not in landfill. Don't think I'll need another backup HDD for quite some time. ... show more

  • Replaced WDC Black 2TB - Easy
Capacity: 4TB Style: 128 MB Cache
Each of my desktop PCs has a backup drive. The 2TB (binary) drive on my four-yr old Dell desk top was getting full. I cleaned the old back-up files and ran one more backup before taking that PC off-line, and replacing the 2TB WDC Black HDD with the 4TB WDC Red-Plus. I used the Windows HDD Installation tool to set up a 2.36TB (binary) partition for Windows backup and a 1.27TB (binary) partition for backups of My Docs, My Pics, and a couple other data files that I do every night with Karen Replicator. I run Windows Backup once a week. I installed the new backup drive 31 Aug, so have run a small handful of Backup operations. The first two were not smooth. They did not complete cleanly, and I don't know why. Eventually I disabled enough anti-virus apps (Windows and TotalAV) that the Backup would run over night. The system backup is 1.19TB (binary) and the data back up is 0.28 TB (binary). I am pleased with the performance of the Western Digital Red-Plus 4TB hard drive. ... show more
