Make SURE that when you buy this, it says "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com" or you may have issues getting the stated 5 year warranty. I ordered 2 of these. Came from a 3rd party seller and when I registered the drives with Western Digital, I only got 30 days of Warranty!! So much for those 5yrs. At least the drives did not come dead. I will update this when and if the drives die.

AFTER NOTE: Finally, resolution...It took several (at least 5) interactions with Customer Service, none of which were possible by phone, but the issue is finally resolved. Western Digital replaced the drive (finally agreeing to pay shipping back the bad drive to them). It took additional attempts for acknowledgement of my return of the bad drive shipment back to them, which then finally activated the full 5 year warranty on the replacement drive. Their default is 120 days, seriously, so if you do buy this and have to return it, be diligent! They just seem overwhelmed in Customer Service. ORIGINAL Which is worse? A hard drive with a 5-year warranty that dies after 33 DAYS, or the company that makes them --in this case Western Digital -- responding unreasonably with rigid rules that are far from appropriate. From my point of view, for a business, the purchase of the hard drive is not just the sheet metal and magnetic discs needed to put them together, it is the company backing the drive, ensuring its reliability. To be fair, I have owned 3 "Red" drives used previously for three years without a problem. This specific purchase was for 4 drives to be used in a Synology DS918+ NAS. I moved up to these "Pro" drives because I was concerned with the period AFTER 3 years, not the first month! The drives installed easily, seemed (on the outside) to be constructed well and were packaged appropriately for shipment. Yesterday, the NAS reflected significant degradation in one of these 4 drives, to the point of not being usable. I figured even good companies have a few buggy drives so I went to the WD website, which was buggy in and of itself and incapable of processing an RMA. So then I called the company this morning. I was informed that I could ship the drive back to them (AT MY EXPENSE) and they would ship me another drive ("re-certified") upon receipt. 10-15 business days (that's two-three weeks, folks). The alternative was I could get premium service, if I gave them my credit card number:They would reserve the full retail price of the drive on my card, ship me a NEW drive now, and release the amount on hold when they got the drive back. Again, shipping on my dime. When I pointed out that it was 33 days (the drive had itself only actually been at work for about three weeks), they said that they would escalate the case, and try to get free shipping, but that if I wanted a NEW drive, they would still need my credit card...even though I explained to them that I was happy to return the drive and wait for them to get it before shipping me the new drive (I bought another drive as a standby for the NAS). They said they would escalate and see. That was about 12 hours ago...still waiting to see. As a business person, I rely on machines...but more importantly I rely on the good faith of the companies producing those machines. When the machine fails -- which happens -- I expect the company to back them up, and do what is right. Right now, I can't even get a straight answer from WD. As some in Washington are known to say "SAD!!!" Two stars in respect of the WD drives that have worked for me in the past.

Purchased the 2 4TB WD Red Pro drives for my QNAP NAS, 1) Drive 1 Failed within 2years and back then they had advanced replacement with a CC hold and this was a decent replacement in good time - Main issue here is the unreliability of the WD RED Pro NAS drives 2) Drive 2 Failed 3 months ago and the Warranty replacement for this has been a nightmare, for advance replacement they now charge $25 non-refundable and you have to pay for postage for shipping the drive to them, alternate was to shipping them the faulty drive and once they receive they will then ship a refurbhised drive to me, its been 2 months and absolutely no response from customer service 3) Main Issues - a) How their top of the line WD RED PRO Drives are so unreliable that twice I lost every thing on my NAS (fortunately I had backed that up) b) Warranty replacements are a big farce with WD they make it extremely painful and they are as unreliable as their Drives no c) There is "Zero" empathy for potential data loss of their customers d) A company that loses its ethics and has "Zero" empathy for their customers, it is only a matter of time before they have to Shut SHOP, the BIG and MIGHTY have fallen when Customer Service has been poor, WD you might be BIG now but the FALL is coming ... I'm switching to another company for all my hard drive needs from here on ...

Have ordered many WD drives over the years. This one (12TB Red Pro) is the first that was DOA. It would spin but not initialize. Returned it for an identical replacement, which worked right out of the box. Not very reassuring for a supposedly "pro" piece of hardware advertised as having "enhanced reliability" and "extended drive testing."

I bought (2) of these units to use in my Synology DiskStation 718+. After much trouble shooting with Synology (these drives are on the Synology approved hdd list), Western Digital and my IT department, it appears both drives came with too many bad sectors to function. Synology installation software says 'Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)'. Windows is unable to initialize the drives in order to delete unallocated dive space, and the Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics fail to test the drives, 'Too many bad sectors detected.' These are brand new drives with manufacture dates in May 2018. I could understand (1) bad drive as bad luck, but (2) is unacceptable. I was instructed by Western Digital to return the drives to the seller.

I have purchased 8 of these drives since the end of Oct 2020 for a NAS. It has not even been one year since their purchase, yet 6 of the 8 drives have FAILED!!! (at different times, thankfully, so no data lost) This is an utterly abysmal failure rate. To add additional pain, WD requires that you pay return shipping for all failed drives and they are slow to send replacements. WD used to have good customer service but they no longer seem to care. I would strongly advice against purchasing these drives. When they are working, the performance is fine, but they only work 25% of the time. FYI, I'm filling out yet another RMA for another failed drive as I write this review. All of the failed WD drives were lightly used in a RAID array for a network share in a NAS which has 16 other hard drives (Seagate drives, of which NONE have failed over 3 years). The failure rate for this WD "Pro" product is completely unacceptable.
