This is my 2nd Jumbo Joe. I gave the first to my son who still uses it. You can cook nearly everything with this grill. Besides the usual burgers, steak, chicken, fish--with techniques I learned online--I have smoked ribs, pork butt and brisket to perfection over several hours. Others have even smoked whole chickens and small turkeys or turkey breasts. Assembly was fairly easy, though the positioning of the parts is critical since they work in concert for best use: the top wire-lock which doubles as a lid holder must be carefully positioned when installed in the base. So, too, must the vent covers be carefully positioned for optimal use via the direction of their handles. The diagrams show it but must be studied to understand how and why to get it right. This 18" rack is big enough to cook food for any group of 4. I wish it had the flip-up sides for inserting extra coals or wood chunks when smoking but that's a minor thing. A rack with hinged sides is available separately but is kind of overpriced, in my view. I use the Jumbo on the ground though some might prefer a table to bring it to waist level. I recommend a metal camping table for about $35 or anything similar. Speaking of camping, I think this is the perfect grill for that, if you have the room to take it along. The Smoky Joe, which I have owned, is a good grill but was ultimately too small for me. Some say the Jumbo Joe selling price is too high, higher than a cheaper 22" with longer legs. But you get what you pay for--the Weber name means QUALITY to me. I've never been disappointed with a Weber product and I have owned their charcoal and gas grills and BBQ tools for decades. ... show more

4.5 overall... Best overall portable charcoal / wood / fire pit. Excellent for cooking (wood and Charcoal). I love the locking lid holder. I've used this for cooking (Wood and Charcoal), as a camp fire pit, and I also use it to smother camp fire coals when I'm done with a fire. Just put the coals inside, close the dampers, and lock the lid. The top vent is not great for temperature control and the kettle does not have a thermometer. ... show more

    • Great Grill, some QC Issues
Having owned a few Smokey Joe grills in the past (they never wore out, but I sold them or gave them away during moves), getting another Weber charcoal grill was a no-brainer; they are built to last and they work well. Unless compactness and price are critical though, I recommend the Jumbo Joe. I've only used it a couple of times, but the larger grill area makes it much more versatile. I'll never go back to a Smokey Joe. Weber needs to clean up it's QC act though. The sharp, stamped edges of the top vent cut right through the enamel into bare metal. I wet-sanded them to smooth out the edges, but the damage was already done. Also, the curvature of the top vent didn't match the lid, leaving big air gaps. These kinds of things are easily fixable if Weber wanted to address them, but they apparently don't. I am not the first person who contacted Weber directly about them. Because it’s a Weber we replaced our old smaller one with this. I like that my paella pan fits perfectly on it! The size is perfect for the two of us. Affordable!

    • Good grill, though it was missing a part
I like Weber charcoal kettle grills. I have a full-sized 22” kettle, and a 14” Smokey Joe. I got this 18” Jumbo Joe for a good deal as it was listed with “cosmetic” damage, and ONLY cosmetic damage. I wasn’t expecting it to be perfect and I don’t mind if things don’t like like new so long as all the parts are there and function as they are supposed to. Cosmetically, the grill was in great shape. However, it did not come with the ash catcher (totally missing from the box), which was supposed to be included, and which I consider important to the safe functioning of the grill. I will have to find and purchase a replacement, which will negate the cost savings from having purchased a blemished item in the first place. ... show more

I find this grill to be easy to use, it has a good amount of grilling area for it's size. The only down sides I can see, are no hook to hang the lid by, and the finish on the cooking grate didn't last very long.
