WD drives have served me for YEARS and I've never felt better about buying their products again.
Capacity: 1TB Style: USB-A ready
I used to buy Seagate products - until they totally hosed me with a faulty product that stopped working in 3 months and then refused to admit the poor quality of their products or help me recover my data - a total shame since it used to be my 'go to' choice in the past. No more. I even have an older iOmega drive that hasn't failed for over a decade, but not Seagate. I found that Western Digital was always good in the past and is even better now. They are my GO TO drive of choice for a couple of years now. The drives are sturdy, well-built, fashionable - and most importantly, reliable! I have three WD drives now - each of a different data capacity - one for Mac and two for other platforms. They don't fail - they chug along happily - don't get hot and don't make me feel insecure about my data - EVER. I've had two of them for YEARS now without failure. The Mac drive is new, but the Mac is, too. I have learned to trust WD with my data and I've never been let down. I might suggest that people also buy a protective case for any external drive - it doesn't cost much - and it just gives you that extra level of feeling your data is protected - but that is just IMO. ... show more

Plug in, and walk away!
Capacity: 4TB Style: USB-A ready
Note: If you read nothing else, you can get your user manual here: wd.com/docs (I read it in the fine print in the material that arrives with the drive) I've waited WAY too long to back up my Mac computers. I remember reformatting drives in the past, and it was no fun. I decided to pick up the 4TB version of this drive and give it a try. I knew to expect the first backup to take a while, so that was no problem. What I liked was that I was able to plug in, and the time machine immediately opened to start a back up. I just waited until it started, then walked away times... I am now using this as a time machine for two different mac computers. After backing up two computers, I've still got 3.65 of 4TB free. I thought about getting the 2TB, but am now glad that I did not. I did purchase the $9.99 warranty through Amazon, only because it includes data recovery (wasn't clear if the WD warranty would). I do expect this will stop working one day, but I think its the best of the devices I reviewed. I hope to never need to use the warranties, but I'm glad they are there. I'd get this you have even ONE Mac Device. I don't feel a need to backup my Android phone because I have google photos, and much of my other stuff is backed up on Google Drive. Finally, I stored it in an old external hard drive case. Its super tiny, so it can be neatly stashed on a bookcase. I'm sure you've heard its important to go gentle on your drive. Hope this works well for you! ... show more

Backing up in Time Machine in 3 minutes.
Capacity: 4TB Style: USB-A ready
Initial reaction: Plugged it into my AirPort, replacing a drive that went bad, I see it on my Mac. In time machine preferences, I switch to that drive, get a backup going, and start copying some large files. Inside of 7 minutes, I've got 2 macs being backed up and files being copied to it. Absolutely no issues. Me Likey. 5 Stars. I'll update this review if things change. UPDATE: Disk went bad inside of a week. Time machine backups started failing. Tried a backup with SuperDuper. Read/Write error. Soon I couldn't even see the disk while it was making repeated clicking sounds. Got a defective one. It happens. Getting another one. Not changing star rating yet. ... show more

3rd Passport was not a charm
Capacity: 1TB Style: USB-A ready
I've had this for 2.5 months & it's only been able to back up my system 3 times. It's supposed to be backing up my system every HOUR. I didn't realize that it wasn't backing up like it was supposed to until 3 days ago. So for 3 days I've tried repeatedly to back up my system but it only makes it so far before freezing up. This is my 3rd & LAST WD Passport. The first one I accidentally dropped & although the exterior didn't crack, it never worked again, 40 years of my life in pictures, gone. No baby pictures of my children & no proof in pictures that I was ever in the military. I was devastated. But it was my fault, so I purchased another WD Passport which failed after 5 years. I honestly didn't now they had a such a short shelf life. I purchased this one in June of this year (2017) & it's not working...so frustrating thinking that you've bought "insurance" when in reality you have no coverage whatsoever -_- ... show more

This seems like my other 1TB drives and I did purchase this ...
Capacity: 1TB Style: USB-A ready
note: that I have not had this for long, so I will hold off on a 5-star rating for now. This seems like my other 1TB drives and I did purchase this for REDUNDANT backups ... I have to say this new model (I have a few of the ones for PC, that are the same way, but will not "review those" here) ... seems a bit faster to the prior models which I have a few of as well ... just transferring to and from this unit seems SPEEDY .. .no problems so far. Note to Linux users: ... "for mac" just means the default file-system is not a Microsoft File-system (FAT32 or NTFS) but Linux can see/handle the apple file system just fine which i did switch to a Linux file-system. THE POINT? ... IIRC this is the exact same unit as "for PC/Windows" but the out of the box file system is for Macs... if you see a good deal on one of these "for Macs" and are a Linux user .... buying this drive and just changing the file system is just as good as doing the same thing with one of these WD 1TB drives "for PC" ... show more

If you're looking for something easy & fast to use for your Mac, I highly recommend it!
Capacity: 1TB Style: USB-A ready
I've been pushing off buying an external hard drive, mostly because the previous one I had failed me and it was somewhat of an annoying extra step to make it Mac-friendly. While I was doing some updates & taking my Mac to genius bar, I decided to finally make a purchase and I’m happy with my decision! I’m mainly using this to store my photos & videos that have been stored and taking so much space in my Macbook from years ago and it was really easy & fast to install and use. 1TB was enough storage for my use and the price was good for my convenience. The drive come with preloaded software for backups and encryption & 2-year warranty, so that was a plus (it’s always nice to have a warranty, even if it’s limited IMO). ... show more

Would 100% reccomend and amazing value for money.
Capacity: 1TB Style: USB-A ready
Just exactly what I wanted. Needed this because my Mac book air memory was full (mainly from pictures, Videos and movies). Extremely easy to set up and use. It comes with instructions, but you can also find information for setup easily online. Very portable if traveling or going away on business and can stay in the case (separate purchase) when plugged in to the laptop for safe keeping. Plenty of length on the cord. All in all, extremely happy. Would 100% reccomend and amazing value for money. ... show more
