  • Great drive, high speed for a traditional hard drive, long warranty
Capacity: 4TB
Works great ... I normally get WD Black 4TB, but they were out when I needed a hard drive for back-ups. I prefer the black, or this gold drive because of the longer warranty and higher speeds compared to their other drives. I would rather spend a little more money and get the longer warranty and the 7200rpm. I have been using WD Black drives for 6 years and I haven't had one go bad yet (fingers crossed). I have only replaced drives (= added drives, still using others) because I wanted a bigger drive since I've been using the Black drives. My son now has his two old 2TB along with a big 8TB because he fills them up with Steam games. I have three old 2TB and 4TB, and an 8TB. The Gold drive also has a 5-year warranty so I feel confident it will also be a great drive. I paired this with a Rosewill hard drive enclosure with a built in fan for cooling. So far so good :) ... show more

  • Fast and quiet.
Capacity: 4TB
Fast, quiet (yes it is quiet) and just plain works. I put this in an external Roswell case and use it on a Mac Pro which i believe is still USB 2. The fan in the case makes some wind noise, and can be turned off. I only ran the fan during my initial backup of about 1.2 TB. Now i leave the fan off, and I've checked the drive a couple of times by hand to see if it is hot and it never is.. You can hear the rw heads moving sometimes, but thats music to my ears. it doesn't have ANY annoying hum, or buzz or other sounds that bother me. I did have to initialize it for the mac, but that took about 5 minutes, including time to find the option.. done! ... show more

  • Honestly can't tell if every one I've received is broken or if they are just that bad.
Capacity: 4TB
The media could not be loaded. Let me preface with this review is based off the THIRD one of these I've bought. The first one had a terrible grinding noise and shook my desk. Data Lifeguard said it had bad sectors. Had it returned, no replacement. The second one cost $30 more because the first one I had bought on sale. It was also very loud, some grinding, but didn't shake my desk. Checked with Data Lifeguard and it said all was clear, I returned that as well. This one I had to pay $10 more than the last one because, though having a lower listed priced, all of a sudden this one was taxed. Each one's packaging was abysmal. Wouldn't be surprised if each one was damaged in transit. Amazon doesn't really get how to transport expensive fragile electronics. I'm just going to assume all of these are irredeemably bad. It is VERY LOUD, constantly making clicking noises as if it's doing something when you aren't even using the drive. I'm definitely not using it and Task Manager says 0% usage so the drive should be asleep, BUT NOPE. Never-ending KRZZZCRAZZZKURRRRR 24/7 no matter what. I was just gonna keep this last one regardless, tired of the back and forthing with returns and waiting for refunds, but I can feel the walls of my mind being torn down hearing it go on and on. I'm feeling more and more tempted to chuck this thing against a concrete slab as every second passes, but I'd prefer my money back and a better drive instead. I've attached a video with it making the noise, take in mind that this isn't the worst it's sounded. ... show more

  • It's called "Gold" for a reason.
Capacity: 6TB
First I would like to start out by explaining that if, like me, you bought one of these refurbished and it already has around 30,000 power on hours, you should know that these are rated for over 2 million power on hours, unlike most drives. These drives are meant for servers that are always on and Gold is the highest possible rating WD offers that I know of. The lifespan of one of these drives is likely to be over half a century. I bought one of these refurbished for only $48 and it only had 32,000 power on hours. For a lower rated drive that would be a lot of power on hours but for these that is nothing. This price was a steal so I bought 3 more and two of them only had around 8000 power on hours. WD Gold drives nearly never fail and the time between errors is over 2.5 million hours so for $48 you definitely want one of these. Even refurbished they are more reliable than any red or green rated drive on the market. ... show more

  • Fast and very long-lived but loud and exorbitantly priced
Capacity: 4TB
This is a fantastic drive for servers, network storage where durability and longevity are paramount, and people who absolutely *have* to have the best, but it's not without caveats. First there's the outrageous (by consumer standards) price, which will probably scare off many people by itself. On top of this, this drive is loud, much louder than WD Blue or even WD Red drives, and its considerable weight will make these sounds resonate more in your case. For this reason, I can't recommend it for desktop computers--it makes my PC much louder even with a Fractal case that features extensive sound deadening. It may keep you up at night. ... show more
