  • Works great! A little slow on slower computers.
This backup drive does exactly what it says. No complaints, Perfectly satisfied, though it may not be as fast as advertised on some systems, including mine. On my computer, which is a 2014 era 1.86Ghz ASUS with 4Gb Ram, the process is a bit slow, even on a USB 3.0 slot. I used the included software to backup about 45 Gigs of documents, photos, and music for an initial trial. It took about 90 minutes for 45 Gigs. That's about 1 Gig per two minutes, far from what some users report at 5 Gigs per second. This was on a USB 3.0 slot. So, just to warn you ahead of time, it may be pretty slow on low performance computers. Especially for large back ups. You can schedule backups hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly automatically, and the backup software that is included in this drive will update any information you've saved on your computer's hard drive in that span of time. This is really convenient for me as a writer. I don't have to manually back up my files anymore. If I've been working on a long file like a book for over a month, I can back up my whole document on the first backup, and then it will back up just the part I've written since the last backup, in subsequent backups. For instance, I did my second backup today, and it was just 13 Megs of information that I've added since my initial 45 Gig first backup. This second backup took about 40 minutes total. Backing up information can be done in the background if you want to work on other things while it is taking place, which makes the included software convenient. Just click one button for each subsequent backup, or if you have the Western Digital drive attached, it will backup at the specified hour, day, week, or month that you want to backup, automatically, with no click of a button.. You can initially choose which file paths and folders you want to backup. You don't have to back up your computer's whole hard drive in automatic backups. In my case, I chose just Documents, Photos, and Music. As other users have hinted, the files are backed up on the Western Digital drive in a special file format with different file extensions than the source file on your hard drive. They appear in a "bin" folder on the Western Digital hard drive. Though not that obvious, they are still easy to find. Restoring backed up data is basically one click of a button as well, using the software included. I have not tried restoring data as yet. However, if you would rather back up your files manually and exactly as they are on your computer's hard drive (same file names and extensions, etc.), you can do so just as easily as with any other USB drive. Simply copy the files directly to the Western Digital hard drive using your Windows File Explorer, like you would with any USB drive. Just out of curiosity, I copied my 45 Gigs of files manually a second time, not using the Western Digital backup software, but Windows file explorer instead. The process was painless and easy since Western Digital drive is formatted in NTFS, just like most computer hard drives. It only took 2 minutes for my computer to copy 45 Gigs of files directly to the Western Digital drive using Windows copy feature rather than Western Digital's software. This was on a USB 3.0 slot. So, it easy to use this drive with the included software, or just as a supplemental hard drive saving to it like you would any USB drive. ... show more

For full disclosure, I was a fan of Western Digitals drives before I bought the unit... I've lost several drives to malfunction and not one of them was a Western Digital (maybe one seagate which isn't a bad brand and several others). I had expectations of the device some were on spot, others were different. I ordered the black 1 TB unit and by the pictures I saw, I was expecting the unit to be made of a high gloss plastic... it wasn't, it's actually a low sheen matte finish that I quite like and seems fairly scratch resistant (so that's a plus) needless to say fingerprints aren't an issue. The unit is thinner than I thought it would be, it's less than a centimeter thick, otherwise it's a little wider and somewhat taller than a deck of playing cards. Mine has a white LED light on the front that lets you know when it's in operation and this was something I hadn't noticed while browsing and it's useful for me as there is no sound whatsoever (you will feel a little vibration if it's beside you on the couch you're laying on of course. The drive copies pretty quick for my liking but I wont be making any appraisal of that feature since my laptop doesn't have USB 3.0 which the unit supports, so technically I'm getting slower speeds than I should and it's fine for me. The software bundled with the unit (which is actually saved on the drive itself ready for install is a pretty standard backup utility which gives you the option to back up whichever files you choose automatically, whether every day, every week, or every month, you will be asked when in the month (eg. first Monday) you want this backup to occur. For some reason this backup was alot slower for me than it would have been for me to copy a file of similar size and paste it directly, perhaps it's archiving it in a way that allows future backups to just be of any added or modified files... I cant say as I've yet to have my second backup. Bundled is also a "drive status utility (?)" That sits in your system tray beside the backup utility which displays how much of the drive is filled, lock status (mine is still unlocked, so I can't speak of encryption observations) and temperature status... mine says ok all the time and it feels as such. I havent noticed these running programs affecting my old laptops performance at all. I expected the unit to be made of a cheaper, thinner plastic with noticeable flex... I was pleasantly surprised. There's no flex to it, it feels well built, I've even walked around with the unit dangling by it's USB cord (which I dont advise) it stays, it gives you confidence like that. I'd buy another in a minute... for the price I'd have been happy with alot less... for what I got, I might have paid more. ... show more

  • Worked for a long time but now having problems
First off, there's really nothing wrong with the drive and it's worked great for 7 years. Now I am having issues with corrupted files and trying to recover / fix the drive now is near impossible as it may be completely failing on me now. This is a sad because it's been solid for very long and if I have to, I will have to reformat almost 500gb of backup data, which will be completely lost. Thank god it's nothing too important though! ... show more
