  • Transcend, rugged, portable, hard disk drive
Capacity: 2 TB Color: Blue
I own a Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P notebook PC and I installed Ubuntu 14.04.2 64 bit LTS GNU/Linux using Linux kernel version 3.16.0-37 generic AMD64. I gave away some older and smaller capacity portable and desktop hard disk drives to my parents and friends and I decided to get this Transcend USB 3.0 2.0 TB MIL-STD certified portable hard disk drive in the blue color on a whim from Amazon. A friend of mine who also uses Ubuntu 12.04.4 64 bit LTS GNU/Linux has this exact same product model and he told me it just works right out of the box. I had good experiences with Transcend products in the past; I own a Transcend M.2 42 mm NGFF SATA-III 6 GB/s 256.00 GB solid state disk inside my Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P and it just worked right out of the box too. I plan to use gParted to delete the FAT32 file system and I will quick format it using the ext4 file system and I will encrypt it using LUKS with the Advanced Encryption Standard 256 bits Secure Hashing Algorithm-1 with a unique, long, complex, and strong password and I will save it to my GNOME keyring. I chose to get this product because it will be my first MIL-STD certified portable hard disk drive. I regularly travel via bus, train, subway, and a friend's personal vehicle to various places like coffee shops, book stores, libraries, hotels, my parent's apartment, my friends' apartments, and anywhere else that offers free public 802.11 Wi-Fi hot spots and I almost always carry my Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P notebook PC, my Logitech Proteus Core G 502 USB 2.0 wired gaming mouse, the 170 watt power adapter, and my Logitech G 35 USB 2.0 wired gaming headset along with my CEntrance HiFi-M8 LX XL4 portable USB 2.0 and TOSLink DAC and headphone amplifier plus my Shure SE-846 CL quad driver earphones inside my Microsoft messenger bag or FUL backpack. I also carry my 2012 ASUS Google Nexus 7 tablet and LG smart phone just in case I need a two-factor code to log into my devices or accounts. This Transcend rugged portable hard disk drive is perfect for my needs as it provides robust physical protection for my unique and precious personal user data and it is fully compatible with most major GNU/Linux distributions right out of the box. It is very fast using the Super Speed USB 3.0 cable and port too. When I tested my friend's Transcend rugged portable hard disk drive, I consistently got 60.00 MB/s sequential read and write performance which is pretty good. The blue color pops and it looks nice and it makes it easy to distinguish my stuff in my bag or backpack when I am on the road. This is a good product especially for GNU/Linux users that require mobility, ruggedness, and portability at an affordable price. The 2.0 TB capacity is spacious and it is more than enough to store all of my personal user data safely and securely. Highly recommended! Update: 05/22/2015: I got my product a few minutes ago and it is working perfectly. I am copying a large amount of personal user data and I am seeing a consistent 60.00 - 63.00 MB/s transfer speeds using the Super Speed USB 3.0 port and cable. Mind you, I have two internal solid state disks including my primary one which is a Crucial M550 2.5" 7.00 mm (with 2.5 mm mounting bracket) SATA-III 6 GB/s 1.0 TB solid state disk. So, I'm copying data from both of my internal solid state disks to the external Transcend StoreJet portable hard disk drive. I like the blue color and it is a rather thick, tough, and stylish design. I also like the circular light indicator to tell me when it is powered on and it blinks rapidly when I am accessing it. It uses a Western Digital 2.5" 15 mm SATA-III 6 GB/s 2.0 TB 5,400 RPM internal laptop hard disk drive which is excellent as WD makes the second most reliable hard disk drives in the market right under Hitachi. It is dead silent and it stays cool to the touch during large data transfers or heavy access. I plan to take good care of this product and I hope to not break it soon. It does work with Ubuntu 64 bit LTS GNU/Linux right out of the box. Please remember that I quick formatted it using the Linux ext4 file system and I encrypted it using LUKS with the AES 256 bits XTS SHA-1 cipher and hashing algorithm so that does slow down the performance a bit. My Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P has the Intel 4th generation "Haswell" Core i7-4700MQ 2.4 GHz quad-core with both Hyper Threading and Turbo Boost CPU so it does natively support AES-NI which provides hardware encryption acceleration of roughly 4.0 times encryption and 10.00 times decryption performance. Ubuntu 64 bit LTS GNU/Linux supports Intel CPUs with AES-NI right out of the box within most modern Linux kernels. I am very pleased and satisfied with my product and Amazon's excellent customer service and support. I will not return this product for a refund. ... show more

  • "One Touch Backup" doesn't work
Capacity: 4 TB Color: Blue
This is a little disappointing. Bought the Transcend 4TB USB 3.1 Gen 1 StoreJet 25H3B SJ25H3B Rugged External Hard Drive TS4TSJ25H3B so that I could pull some files off I don't always use on my two computers but don't want to delete. First, specifics: The drive is small, lightweight, fits in your hand well. I could put this in my purse or pocket and I doubt very much the extra weight of this would kill me. The drive is actually a little less than 4 TB (3.93 TB) because they put a driver/program that you must first install on your computer on there, but it's negligible and was expected. I did install that program on both my computers, but it failed to work on either one. So the "one touch backup" is more like you back up the files manually, cutting & pasting like you would with any other portable thumb or stick drive. I would have liked that back up feature, but the real reason I bought this wasn't for that but for the 4 TB space and also for the advertised 3-tiered shock protection. I'd bought a WD Elements portable drive some time back and after a simple 2 foot drop from a table to a carpeted floor, it went kaput - along with all my files. I'm hoping if similar events occur, this might offer better protection. I'm not returning it because I can still manage to get the files off the computers. I was able to remove 1.5 TB from one computer and I'm quite happy with that. It didn't take forever to do, either, and that's a huge plus. To be honest, I expected it to take hours & hours and it didn't. I would buy it again, remove the program that doesn't do what it's supposed to & go from there. For the space you get & the shock protection, I really am hoping this works well that way. I do reserve the right to amend this review should anything change in the future. For now, it is what it is and it appears to be working just fine, even if I can't do the "one touch" backup. ... show more

Recently bought a pair for like the 10th time. I started using Transcend StoreJet series when I lived in Cambodia about 10 years ago. Not trusting the merchandize quality that was available in the Cambodian market at that time (no regulation/no quality check -> dumping ground for sub-par products), I made a point of purchasing a good chunk of famous brands in the US when I traveled back. I was starting on a rather large documentary film project. I bought the usual suspects. WD, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. They all would had slow start, stuttering and some failure. Out of utter frustration and reluctantly through a recommendation of a local filmmaker friend, I picked up my first pair of Transcend. I never looked back since. They always came to life fast. Never failed to read. I have purchased 16 or so of them (all in pairs due to my back up needs). None has yet to fail or yet to fail to start, or even stutter. The track record I experience is impeccable and ridiculous, compared to other established brands. I am a filmmaker and do massive photography for exhibits sometimes. Transcend StoreJet is the only brand I fully trust. I recently picked up a pair of Seagate 2T USB drives. They feel finicky. Not failed yet but let's see if they can begin to re-establish my trust on other brands. Because Transcend came in and delivered quality when I felt most vulnerable, I remain grateful to this brand. ... show more
