  • Great Doorbell Solution, Too Many Bell Options!
Color: White
My family and I live in this old house and when we moved in, there was one of those classic button-with-speaker things where you can talk to whoever rang your bell and then theoretically let them in with a push of a button from another floor. Well that shit never worked from day one. Well, let me correct myself... the bell would ring. Someone could actually push the button and then the bell would ring. But then we started getting alerts from friends via text or call saying, "Hey I'm down here ringing the bell and nobody's coming." I guess even that old button went on the fritz. I'm not embarrassed to tell you that I'm not Mr. Handyman. I can hang a picture or a shelf, maybe even fix a toilet, but I'm not up to the task of doing electrical work to rehabilitate this old piece of crap. So I went on Amazon to see what kinds of new tech options there were to choose from. Lucky for me, I found the TECKNET Wireless Doorbell with Bluetooth technology! Of course, I thought to myself... Bluetooth! And for only $17 bucks, how could I go wrong. When the TECKNET Doorbell arrived, I was giddy with excitement. The listing proudly claimed "38 Different Chimes To Choose From!" so I knew we were all in for a treat. The bell itself comes with an adhesive pad that you use to apply to or near your front door. Easy enough. I plugged in the "receiver" near a chair in my living room. Trust me when I tell you, this receiver can be plugged anywhere in the house because you'll hear it VERY clearly when the bell is rung. It wasn't until after I had installed it that I realized you could manage the volume, but for the purposes of this review, let's just say it was on EXTREMELY LOUD during the Chime-choice phase. My wife and kids were standing around ready for this show I promised them was going to be incredible. This was a mistake. Definitely buy this product. It's great. But do NOT make a big show of it when it arrives. Their expectations were sky high and I'll just say many of the Chime sound effect choices are not great. They include the classic "ding dong" and other related styles of sounds, but of course, when someone like me is hunched over the plugged in receiver on his hands and knees, I had to go through all 38 choices! • Ship's Horn • Old School Buggy Horn • Wacky Slide Whistle One after the other, my family stood behind me saying, "NO! Next!" But in order to get back to the one probably EVERYBODY settles on, you have to cycle through all 38 chime options. And keep in mind, it is at the full volume, so when I accidentally went past the actual good ones, my family groaned knowing that I was going to have to go around again with this torture of sound effects. The dog was going absolutely bananas. Only other thing to mention is that there is a little battery in the bell that goes outside of your door. This will probably need to be replaced in about a year. These batteries are those annoying circular ones that you can't get everywhere, so I just went on Amazon and bought a little pack. I guess I should also mention that my kids' backpacks always seem to rub the button each time they come in the house so there's lots and lots of bell-ringing in my house when school is in session. ... show more

  • Great Doorbell
Color: White
I had to buy a new doorbell when our old one bit the dust. This one worked out great. We've had no problems with it. We have the receiver/bell part plugged into a wall socket about 40-50 feet from the front door (button mounted just outside the front door) and it works just fine. Hasn't failed us yet! I bought a different brand before this one but had to return it to Amazon because it didn't work from the start. There are many different brands from which to choose on Amazon and I would definitely recommend this TECKNET one. ... show more

  • Excellent range, works 120/240V, set up as my Mailbox Alarm
Color: White
Love this wireless doorbell unit so far. I didn't need a doorbell; I needed a mailbox alarm and with a few modifications this works great! My mailbox is 700ft from my house so I wanted a way of knowing the mailman had come before trouncing 1/4mi round trip in the Seattle rain. I bought this unit because the range was advertised as 820ft. First thing I did was plug the receiver into a wall outlet on the second floor of my house near a window facing the mailbox. Walked down to the mailbox and pressed the button. Worked perfectly at 700ft! I then proceeded to make a few modifications to adapt this unit to what I really needed. However, if you are buying this for its original intention as a doorbell, you should be all set. It works right out of the box, battery is already installed in the transmitter and it is already paired to the receiver. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes to have it up and running as a doorbell. To answer a few of the questions I see repeatedly asked in the Reviews: Yes, the receiver works on any outlet power 100-240VAC, just like your iPhone charger or laptop power supply. A lot of reviewers said it is only 120V, not true. The instruction sheet that comes with it clearly says, "Receiver Power Supply: 100V-240V". The actual plug is the standard two-blade North American style which we use for 120V, but the unit itself can be used on 220/240V international mains. Next, people seem to wonder how to change the battery in the transmitter (the instructions are woefully silent on this). Simply insert a small flat blade screwdriver in the slot on the back and push a bit to release the tab, then gently pry off the back. Pay attention to polarity when you change battery. The negative end of the battery holder is the one with a small spring on it. In case you're interested, here is how I modified it for the mailbox. This is really intended for those of you who are comfortable with electronics, know how to solder, and are willing to tinker a bit. This will definitely void the warranty (big deal; it only cost $12). It is perfectly safe since you are only messing with the 12V transmitter unit. I took the cover off the transmitter unit and soldered a couple of wires across the pushbutton so that I could add an external NC microswitch I had attached to the mailbox door. When the door is opened by the mailman, the microswitch contacts close and this activates the transmitter the same as if you were pushing the built-in button. The internal antenna is sort of interesting. Half of it is printed on the circuit board, and the other half is a small 1-inch long spring soldered to the end of the circuit board. Figuring the signal would have a problem getting out of the steel mailbox, I carefully soldered a small coax cable at the junction of the PCB antenna and spring antenna, and then soldered the coax shield to the backplane of the PCB. I ran this through a hole I drilled in the bottom of the mailbox. Once exiting the mailbox, remove the outer shield and let the inner conductor of the coax stick out 6-3/4in (170mm) which is a quarter wavelength at the operating frequency. If you want to make a more exotic antenna, visit your library and check out a ham radio book; the ARRL Handbook is a good one. Look for antennas for the 70cm (440MHz) ham band. For the geeks: The frequency this wireless doorbell operates at is 433.920MHz which is pretty typical for remote control gadgets. The signal sent is a short burst of digital pulses. If you hold the button pressed, the transmitter will continually send the signal. I measured the output on an RF Power Meter and mine is showing +0dBm (which is 1 milliwatt, i.e. 1/1000 of a watt). Not a lot of power for 700ft, so I think they have a pretty good receiver. The build quality of the printed circuit board appears very good. ... show more
