Description
1. Cut off the power of circuit breaker. 2. Install the wire from your 24 volt adapter to the “C” terminal and the other wire to the “RC” terminal. This transformer is like aspirin! It arrived quickly, and was easy to hook up. It’s been plugged in and powering my thermostat for several months now, without a single issue. I bought a smart wifi thermostat to replace my older thermostat that didn’t need a C wire. Ohh... I can’t tell you how frustrating this was. I had the C wire, but it wasn’t plugged into anything. Being that I’m not an electrician I didn’t want to blow up my furnace or a/c, or new thermostat by connecting the C wire to the wrong thing. HEADACHE!! So I looked for a safer fix, and found this. I read the review that suggested that this burned up someone else’s thermostat, so I was concerned. But, I’ve realized that that person obviously plugged the live/positive wire into the wrong spot, or possibly with the negative wire. As someone else instructed; One wire goes in the R slot with the red wire and the other goes in the C slot. If you aren’t sure which wire is positive please use a voltage meter to check before hooking it up. If the wires are marked: wire with the stripe or the dashed lines carries the "positive" (+) end, while the other, unmarked wire carries the "negative" (-) end. Positive should go to the C wire place on the thermostat. If you don’t do this properly you can create a fire hazard, but it’s not this product’s fault.

This is working very well for my Honeywell wifi thermostat (specifically RH6580WF). All I had to do was remove the jumper on my new thermostat, connect the red and white thermostat wire to R and W, then this power adapter to C and Rc (Rc is no longer jumped to R) and it started right up. This saved me a LOT of hassle and a LOT of money! The wire was nice and easy to run work with to run up through the wall from my basement so I didn't have to have the power supply out on display. Only thing I would like to see changed is that the stripped end of the wire is a bit too long, even after I cut the end in half! Would have also been nice if it wasn't hard wired to the power adapter as running the cable down the wall instead of up would have been even easier (I ended up just bunching the wire at the bottom of the wall from the basement, using a hook on the end of a fiberglass wire fishing kit -- took about 4 tries and a few minutes to snag the wire and pull it up)

I have a Nest thermostat hooked up to my central air. From day one I had issues with the system not working properly after I installed the Nest. I chalked it up to the system being over 25 years old at the time of installation. Fast forward and I just replaced the system with a brand new one and I assumed that with the new system all would work as it should. It did not. In fact, I was unable to use the Nest as the system would run for about 2 minutes, cycle off, delay start for about 5 minutes and then cycle on again for about 2 minutes. The tech who installed the system said it was probably due to a lack of the "C" wire but due to the crazy routing of my wiring it would be extremely difficult to redo it. This solved all the issues. The key is knowing what you are doing. There are 2 wires and they are non polar i.e. doesn't matter which you use as the "C" or the "Rc". The key is that you must splice one of the 2 wire with your existing "Rc" wire, the other goes into the "C". Now all is working as it should :-). The only reasons for not giving 5 stars is: 1. it is twisted wire as opposed to solid which is easier to install into the thermostat 2. no instructions included so you really must know what you are doing in advance.

I bought this along with a Sensi smart thermostat. I knew the existing thermostat had no "C wire", and that my simple heat-only system would require such a supplemental transformer. The thermostat worked on the wall but the remote function kept failing within minutes of set-up, with a message indicating it was not connected to power. I spent hours trying to figure out what I did wrong in connecting the wires but kept getting the same result. it finally occurred to me to check the transformer. I had an old multi-meter, and the voltage meter never moved when I checked the transformer. This seemed so unlikely I even bought a new meter thinking my old one must be no good. But--same result. So I ordered a second transformer, a different brand at about the same price. (who knows really what the brand is; there are all pretty generic and probably come from the same Chinese factory). Voila! it did register on my meter and the thermostat also worked fine when I connected the second transformer. Obviously poor quality control, but what irked me most was that I was suspicious anyway when I got this that the termostat had previously been returned: the plain white box it came in, no markings of any kind, was coming apart. I imagine the earlier customer also said it did not work. I am returning this one and hope it's not palmed off on another unsuspecting customer.
