  • Another Sunseeker winner (Multiple updates included)
Style: Sunseeker X3 Plus
This is my 2nd robot mower. My first was the Sunseeker L22 series which I had for 2 mowing seasons (including this one). While I loved the L22, after seeing the X3 Plus I knew I'd be happier with an upgrade. I set it up for the first time today and WOW- what a difference. The L22 was still great for what I needed it for, but the customizations and capabilities of the X3 are so much more. It ended up raining shortly after I got it set up, so I don't have much to review as far as the 'mow quality' but I do have a basic review to share on setup. First of all, it will take you much longer to setup than the advertisement says. Most of that time is playing with the app and getting connections, settings etc setup. The antenna is fidgety. I'll get "RTK intializing" errors even though the antenna was placed in the middle of our backyard (closest thing taller than 4' is our house 30' away). If I exit the app, clear out any errors on the mower and restart the app, it's usually fixed. Once I get past the initial setup, it's fairly easy. It takes getting used to driving the mower to create the route, so take your time. It feels self-explanatory at first until you realize you missed a step 20 minutes ago. Read the instructions...READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Just read it- especially if your yard is complex like mine. A random feature that excited me was the ability to adjust mowing speed. The L22 was one speed and minimal features, so being able to control things like that on the X3 was fun. There are two things I don't care for that I wish I would've researched more before the package arrived. First, the antenna. They recommend it on your roof but say that you can put it in your yard if there's nothing blocking it's view of the sky. The pictures in the ad show it 5-10' from the house, which didn't work when I tried it. Bummer. The second thing is the ability to drive in grass. Yes, it sounds dumb. The L22 I had before this one got stuck maybe once in the entire time I had it (and it was my fault). It went through tall grass, short grass- just about anything. This X3 seems to struggle a bit more. While I was driving it around to create the map it got stuck in a couple of very small holes in the ground. I changed the speed, got some momentum and it ended up being fine. It could be a fluke thing that won't be an issue down the road, but it was definitely shocking to see so soon out of the box. Again, this is just Day 1 so I'll add more information in a few weeks. I'm excited to see the stripes in the grass and to see it mowing less than the L22 did since this one's smarter. More to come. Compared to L22 -Feels like it weighs less (haven't actually checked the numbers) -While quality was never an issue with the L22, this one feels tougher and better quality -Adjustable speeds allow for quicker mowing jobs if you're expecting bad weather/guests/party etc -Custom mowing patterns with the X3 vs Random with the L22 -No wires....NO WIRES (except the antenna one) -X3 app is very user friendly, more customizable and altogether better looking -Price feels up there, but when you compare it to other robot mowers in the industry..it's competitive. 3 Day UPDATE** Alright, so I've been using it for 3 days straight now. I think I have a good grasp of the app and how this mower works. The biggest surprise to me was that it won't mow over thick patches of grass. I have two small patches of grass that are very thick and as soon as it encounters the slightest bit of resistance it stops and goes around it. This has resulted in 2 patches of grass not being mowed in my backyard. Can I fix the patches? Yes. Just something to keep in mind. This wasn't clear to me when I ordered, but in the instruction manual that comes with the mower it does state that it won't mow over thick or tall patches of grass. Something else to keep in mind- yes, it's a smart GPS mower and yes it mows in patterns, but it will still mow over the same area 3 or 4 times before it moves on to another part of the lawn. If you're standing there watching it, this can be frustrating. Just don't watch it LOL. It looks crazy but it does eventually mow the rest of the lawn and, if you don't watch it, you'll never know it mowed the same spot 3 or 4 times over. In some cases, that's not a bad thing, but if it mowed well the first pass then you want to smack your head in a wall watching it do it 3 more times. I've yet to see the mower mow the edge. The patterns eventually cover the edge, but one thing nice about the L22 was that it would start with the edge (perimeter) and then mow the rest. The L22 was also less sensitive to mowing large patches and tall grass. This X3 is faster, more efficient, but also more sensitive (sometimes to a fault). Last but not least, the Schedule on the app doesn't seem to want to Save. I'll click Save twice like you're supposed to and it gives you the response that it was sent to the mower. Then....the schedule is blank. I've submitted a Help ticket to see if it's something wrong with the app. App & Firmware updates are up to date. Not sure what's up with that- rest of the app works fine and is actually very impressive. I have 5 Zones, 2 corridors and 1 No Go zone. The mower also learned where our shephards hook is and also our bench (and shows it on the map). Pretty cool Just some odd things that you find out as you mow with it more. I still love it and would buy again, but having to fix patches of grass because the mower is more sensitive is a bit frustrating. LAST UPDATE (about) 1 month later**** It's not very often I feel the need for a 3rd update, but here we are. Many of the issues (and even inconveniences) that I encountered in the first week have been resolved: -A new error I encountered: the mower would turn off after returning to the base. When this happened with the L22, I would pull the mower off the base, turn it on, enter PIN and then return it to the base to charge. This would usually fix it (for months). With the X3 however, that didn't work. So, I reached out to customer support. They responded in less than an hour (I did not however...sorry about that!). They pulled the mower's "action log" and saw that the mower didn't think it was charging so it shut off to preserve the battery. Basically it was idling and said to itself, "hey the boss man is giving us a break so let's shut off." They told me to clean off the charging contact points on both the base and the mower and, sure enough, issue resolved. For the record, I've had a consistently positive experience with their customer service. -Previous complaint: the mow quality. The mower would run into thick patches of grass and go around it, thinking that it's an obstacle. I tested a few things to fix this but only one worked. Using my push mower I mowed it to a height shorter than what my X3 was set to. After a week or two the grass eventually grew tall enough for the X3 blades to barely come into contact with the thick patch. Boom. It was that simple. -A very minor inconvenience that I had mentioned was regarding the perimiter (Edge) mow and that the mower performed it at the end of the mowing job instead of at the beginning (like the L22). Either I missed it (unlikely- I lived in the app for the first couple days) or they updated the app since, but you can now select if you want the Edge mow to take place at the beginning or end of the mowing job. Incredible customization option. -Also mentioned before about the "RTK initializing" error that you get at random intervals. This isn't really an error despite what the app will tell you. In reality this is the mower syncing with the antenna. Give it 30 seconds anytime it says this and it should resolve on it's own (sometimes I'll switch sections in the app and then return to the main screen). If the mower is far enough away from the antenna you may get a "Locating" delay which, to me, is the same thing. Just give it a few seconds. If it's a continuous issue the app has a "coverage map" (yes- just like you cell phone carrier) where it will show you the strong and weak signal points of your lawn given the antenna's location. It was a rough start, but I went from the L22 mowing 85% of my lawn to the X3 mowing 98% of my lawn. Give the mower time to learn your lawn (yes- it learns the size of obstacles, like trees, so it can mow the grass on all sides) and take the time to learn the features of the app. The setup process is 100% worth it. Once the mower is adjusted to the completixities of your lawn, you can set it and forget it. It takes me 20 minutes tops to weed eat the perimiter of our house and property- that's all I spend on lawncare now. Several hours that I can now spend with my kids or doing something I want to do. ... show more

  • Cute, Smart, and Super Easy to Use!
Style: Sunseeker V3 Robot Lawn Mower
This little guy is honestly kind of adorable—those “eyes” and even a tiny little wiper made me smile right away. It came with two rolls of magnetic strip that I used to block off areas I didn’t want it to mow, and it picked up on them with no issues at all. Setup was ridiculously easy—like, I was up and running in under two minutes just by following the manual. It’s basically “press and go.” It also came with two tags that are supposed to help it switch between zones. I haven’t tested that part yet, but if it works, that’s a total game-changer. So far, I’m seriously impressed and loving it! ... show more

  • Not ‘great’, but still pretty good
Style: Sunseeker V3 Robot Lawn Mower
I have a tiny lawn but still a hundred or so feet of yard that is adjacent to neighbors’ yards. The magnetic strip that is included is about 20% as long as I would need to cover that length. I contacted support and they actually do not offer additional magnetic strip sold separately. The result is I had to limit use to my backyard (they recommended I put a brick border around my lawn which flies in the face of easy setup). I followed the setup instructions. It gets stuck but this is rare. My biggest gripe is that so far not even once has it successfully returned to its charging base after mowing. It mows well. Surprisingly so. This section was edited after my first version of the review where it was t mowing as well for some reason. I’m still experimenting with setup, and I fear that I will be putting the magnetic strip such that the mower is restricted to only my backyard. For the same money I could get my whole yard mowed by a landscaper for two full summers or more. UPDATE: I closed off my backyard with magnetic strip. It solved the problem. Mow quality: quite good. Ease of setup/use: could be fine if your whole yard is fenced-in, otherwise trial and error. Battery life: see photo. It will do about that much area before needing a recharge. Figure 2-3 charges to complete my whole yard. I gave a 2nd star for their customer service. Yes I did not like their answer (install brick) but they were responsive and timely with it. EDIT: today it’s 90+ degrees outside and this lil guy mowed (almost) my whole backyard. If it could find its way back to the charging station on its own I’d be at 4*. This can’t get to 5*cm but it’s a solid 3-4* (give it a chance before judgment, mine seems to get better with every mow) ... show more

  • Networking concerns
Style: Sunseeker X3 Plus
I’m just about to bail on this mower. The mower does not seem to cut the grass as much as it beats it into submission, which is ultimately what I want, is a low grass yard. The tassles that stick up on some different grasses just get stuck around the back/idle wheels, not the powered wheels. Which is good, because it’s not sticking up. My latest issue is its “plan path failed.” This happened only after I discovered that the mower was contacting China and Hong Kong over a hundred times a day. I blocked those connections on my network system, and ever since the plan path has failed multiple times daily. It has not one time since mowed the yard in its entirety. I’m not turning the connections back on. I’m most likely going to sell this very expensive yard matting device on FB marketplace, because it’s too long out for me to return it. If you don’t mind those connections, the machine does just fine keeping the grass low, it mows approximately 0.1 acre of my yard and does fine when it actually mows. Installation was easy enough. Traction in the yard is fine, and it identifies areas where it gets stuck so you can remedy the issue at your convenience. ... show more
