Should I Buy It?

If you’re looking for an environmentally friendly and maintenance-free lawn mower and are willing to invest upfront for long-term benefits, the Ego Zero Turn 42 Inch Lawn Mower could be a great choice. However, consider your yard's terrain and the potential need for firmware updates before making the purchase.

  • Wonderful Tool
This is coming from someone who has never enjoyed lawn care, but this ego zero turn 42 inch lawn mower, I'm having a tremendous amount of fun with! It does a great job cutting the lawn, I'm enjoying using it twice a week and it's incredibly fast and easy to do my yard. The machine charges all the batteries rapidly, and it can go to from a zero to full charge in under 2 hours. So far everything on the machine has been very easy to use, I'm getting compliments from people in my neighborhood on how the grass looks and more importantly I'm enjoying it. The only negative I have on this machine is the overall price of it as it is an expensive upfront cost, but not having to do any maintenance as of right now is a great payoff. Also the batteries will be able to be used with other ego pieces of equipment and I plan on purchasing the snow blower later this year where the batteries from the lawn mower will work in the snow blower. Again very happy with the overall performance and ease of use. Anyone who has the funds to make this type of investment, I think we'll be happy. ... show more

  • Works like a charm.
Mow a 33K lot with this thing, and it’s a little overpowered for that. I have usually around 45% battery left when I mow from 100%. As a mower, it’s frankly very nice. Controls are responsive, and intuitive. Cuts like a dream. Never had a zero turn mower before and that’s very nice. Very quiet. No smelly gas, to little red gas tank, no annoying trips to the gas station with the little red tank which always leaves behind a nasty odor in the car, no oil, no choke, no carb, etc. recharges in an hour. Frankly, I couldn’t be happier. ... show more

  • Quality Is POOR. Warranty work is SLOW and unpredictable.
I bought this mower last year (2022) to mow approximately 2.5 acres. The first year it was great -- no issues at all. At the start of the second season (this year), I tried a firmware update, which failed, and completely bricked the mower. After many failed attempts to re-flash the firmware, and time with Ego tech support, it they told me to bring it in to a service center. The nearest service center with any reasonable wait time was an hour away from my house (so four hours total driving time to drop off and pick-up). Keep in mind they do not cover transportation as part of your warranty, so if you don't have a trailer, good luck. The service center took approximately four weeks to fix it. In the meantime, I had to rent another riding mower for $180 and spend another two hours round trip transporting it. The service center replaced the battery management system (BMS), which did seem to do the trick (I was able to drive the mower onto my trailer to bring it home). Fast forward a few days, and I was finally able to mow my yard. It was extra thick, so it drained the batteries before I was done. After letting it charge overnight, I went to turn it on this morning and... another issue. It "turns on", in the sense that the control panel looks normal, but it won't move, and the blades won't turn on (error 607). This is getting incredibly frustrating. At this point, I'd warn anyone and everyone away from this mower. Their quality control seems subpar and their independent repair network is slow and unpredictable. Now my best case scenario seems to be wasting another four hours to take it back to the repair shop (while likely needing to rent a mower again in the meantime). It's absurd and shameful. While this mower is great in theory (until it seemingly inevitably breaks), I'd stick with a gas mower with fewer electronics and way more time to have worked out the bugs. The rest of the Ego lineup seems decent (string trimmers, blowers, push mowers), they just don't appear to have the engineering chops to build a quality riding mower. UPDATE I contacted Ego support about the latest issue. They told me they would escalate it and I should hear back no later than the next business day. It is now three business days later with no contact. ... show more

  • Just charge and mow
I ordered on a Friday and it was delivered the following Wednesday. The freight company wouldn't deliver to my house because I live down windy narrow roads. So I had to meet them nearby and transport it the rest of the way myself. A minor inconvenience but nothing out of the ordinary when you live in the sticks. Pro tip: The manual tells you to completely disassemble the metal shipping cage. It is a lot easier to just remove 8 bolts around the bottom of the cage and then lift the top part off the mower. (see pics) Then you can turn it upside down and use it to store firewood if you want. 2nd Pro Tip: try not to rip the black plastic covering. You can use it to cover the mower instead of paying $90 for the Ego mower cover. I keep my mower in an old shed, and the plastic keeps the bird s%&! off of it. Assembly is straightforward and didn't take long. Updating the firmware was a little intimidating, but it worked fine (just follow the instructions). I had never driven a zero turn mower before so there was quite a learning curve (I got stuck in the ditch on the maiden voyage). It has a lot of power - it goes up steep hills much easier than my gas mower did. My biggest complaint is the handling on slopes. It will go up hills fine, but when going sideways on even a gentle slope, this thing always wants to go downhill. It doesn't get very good traction and will slide and tear up grass. I've heard of others adding weights to help with that but I haven't tried it. It's basically silent when the blades aren't on, and not very loud when they are. I like to listen to music/podcasts/audiobooks while I mow. I used to wear earbuds under protective ear muffs. With this mower I can hear the earbuds just fine without wearing ear muffs or cranking up the volume. Everyone already knows that an electric mower doesn't use gas or oil. But my absolute favorite thing about this is that it has no belts! My old mower drove me nuts constantly breaking belts in the middle of mowing. So I'm so happy to be done with that. No more gummed up carburetors; no fouled spark plugs; no clogged air filters. Just charge and mow. ... show more
