The foldable cardio stair stepper arrives in several parts and requires assembly. It consists of five partially pre-assembled components plus the monitor. A detailed manual is included, featuring both diagrams and explanatory text. While the manual is well-made, the diagrams use very fine lines (though the photocopy unfortunately made them appear thicker). They are truly legible only in very good lighting. However, the assembly looks more complicated than it actually is; I had my 12-year-old son do it, and it took him just 10 minutes. Unfortunately, the machine has a few weak points. One is the safety pin on the back, designed to prevent the unit from collapsing; it relies on a spring-loaded ball mechanism. Such safety mechanisms aren't very durable over time and eventually fail to serve their purpose effectively. A design featuring a hole at the end of the pin secured by a cotter pin would be safer. Also, the machine is designed only for shorter users. I had to set the handlebars to the highest position for my son, who is 5'7" tall. The handlebars are in a fixed position and cannot be adjusted, which doesn't exactly foster the right feel for a good workout. Using the machine isn't particularly comfortable. The incline cannot be adjusted, so the movement pattern doesn't truly mimic climbing stairs; the angle doesn't align with the natural motion one is used to. Consequently, I don't feel motivated to use the machine daily. Pushing the foot pedal all the way down to the bottom results in a loud banging noise. Better cushioning at the pedals' lowest point of travel would prevent the loud noise. The movement itself also generates significant noise due to the rollers. If you live in an apartment, you should place a rug underneath the unit so your downstairs neighbors don't end up "participating" in your workout. Pedal resistance cannot be adjusted, meaning the training effect can only be controlled by varying the duration of the workout. The display unit is easy to operate; it has just one large button. You have to scroll through the relatively short menu if you want to change the displayed values. You can also download an app, or access additional functions, though these require extra components. Folding the machine is quick and easy; it isn't particularly heavy and takes up very little space when folded. My final assessment: This is not the piece of exercise equipment I would use every day. It has some design flaws that make using the machine on a daily basis uncomfortable. The noise it generates makes a mat necessary. I will try using the device for a while, but I don't see much of a future for us.
