  • So cute and fun to build & run. Great documentation.
The media could not be loaded. Pidog just seems so happy, wagging his tail and doing superman and howling and trotting tricks. I watched the assembly videos and used the paper assembly instructions too - the two together complemented each other, and the only problems were where I failed to follow the instructions, which nevertheless were really good. You do need patience and good dexterity to build it - some parts are quite small and the screws and nuts for servos can be challenging. You want to think about building it as a fun challenge, like a puzzle, not as a chore full of difficulties, and you'll have a good time. It's not a simple build - there are about 70 steps, but all the parts are there and clearly labeled. The documentation is really well done - from the hardware build to how to install & run the software. The canned example programs are fun and pidog is perky and does fun stuff. It has so many sensors and behaviors. Support is good. There's a forum for asking questions and you get an answer in a day. I dropped Pidog and broke a neck servo, and also the speaker failed so no sound initially. Sunfounder shipped me replacement parts which arrived in about 2 weeks. I've run all the examples, and I'm working through the section where you create your own programs based on the source code they give you, and I find the function examples documentation clear. I suspect there's an API doc in there somewhere but haven't found it yet. It is not a software programming course, but rather a vehicle for trying python programming in a robot. Depending on your skill level with software you may spend more or less time trying to understand and re-create the sample code they give you. I'm an experienced roboticist and I was prepared to struggle and the whole experience turned out to be pleasantly problem-free. There will be learning experiences for those not so advanced - but that's why you choose a kit like this. But be careful not to give it so someone who doesn't have the right mind-set. ... show more

  • installing the software and start running it not evident
The PiDog is assembled, but the software is not 100%. Once the installation is completed, it is my intention to alter and expand the Phython-code.

  • Initially overwhelmed but looking forward to building!
I got this with the intent of assembling together with my 12-year old but quite frankly, it sat on the shelf until I could learn more about Raspberry pi. Other reviewers have done a great job of beginning to educate me so I just ordered the 3B+ board off Amazon and it wasn’t too bad at $48 and comes tomorrow. I was going to order the latest 4B version but several have said this is a sweeter spot and even if it is an older model, it’s better for this robot. My daughter has been showing some STEM talent and what better a way to have some time together to both learn and develop of skills together on this. And how cool to be able to share with friends and talk about on school and other learning program applications. Yea the parts list and 70 some odd assembly steps can seem daunting but it’s a great opportunity for both of us to tackle a big project like this in digestible steps, and have something really fun to look forward to at the end. And the maker has some excellent online documentation and videos to help the assembly process. I also got an electronics screwdriver set with all the mini torx, etc and a rechargeable base that’s really cool and should help! Looking forward to it and I’ll post updates when we finish. ... show more

  • An adventure
I'm still working with my kids to put this thing together... what an adventure. Quite fun, but goodness, be prepared for the amount of parts. There are extremely tiny screws, a bunch of duplicate parts, but have to be installed on the left or right side, and does require some immediate configuration right at the start to get the servos in the right orientation. So far this thing has been a blast to slowly put together bit by bit over a couple of weekends. Nearly finished, but not quite yet. The screw drivers it came with were great... they were magnetic, which helped for the extremely tiny screws. ... show more

  • Fun project, requires beginner programming skills and dexterity
It took me about 4h to assemble this little guy and get it going including programming the SD card and installing all the repos it wanted me to install. Everything fit together as it should and there were extra bolts thrown in as a buffer. My only issue with this is that all movement seems to happen in slow motion. I think this is a board/software issue since it is experienced by almost all servos. The only one with no movement issue is the head, it rotates way faster than the rest of the joints. Installing the software was as easy as following the instructions on their website. The only one that I had issues with was the sound driver which I had to run 3 or 4 times to get it to finally stick. After everything was installed and I got the dog's ip I was able to run all the pre recorded routines and install the drivers required for the app. The app worked very well from the get go on my phone. ... show more

  • A fantastic kit
This is a really cool kit. This kit is used with your own Raspberry Pi so one is not included. The rest of the electronics are included. This is a complicated kit with lots of parts. Some of which are small. Perfect for hands on people and makers. The instructions are detailed and easy to follow. Best of all you can view assembly videos online. The parts are well made. I'm very impressed with the overall quality. ... show more
