🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The DJI Avata drone has garnered high praise from users for its ease of setup, intuitive flying experience, and impressive specs such as 4K at 60 fps video quality. First-time users and drone enthusiasts alike appreciate the included goggles for an immersive flying experience, although some mention the goggles can fog up due to sweat. While the drone's performance and quality are highlighted, there are mentions of the goggles controller compatibility issues that firmware updates don't fix. Detailed cost breakdowns suggest that the 3-battery combo offers better value compared to purchasing items separately.

Pros

  • 🚀 Easy to set up and pairs up perfectly
  • 🕶 Adjustable goggles cater to those who wear glasses
  • 🚁 Exceptional flight performance with nimble and quick movements
  • 🎥 Superior video quality with 4K at 60 fps and HDR
  • 👍 Fits well for both beginners and experienced drone enthusiasts

Cons

  • 💧 Goggles can get sweaty and fog up
  • ⚠️ Firmware issues with incompatible goggles controller reported
  • 💸 The 1-battery combo may end up more costly due to necessary additional purchases

Should I Buy It?

If you're looking for a high-quality drone that's easy to use, offers an immersive flying experience with adjustable goggles, and comes with superior video capabilities, the DJI Avata is a solid choice. However, consider opting for the 3-battery combo for better overall value and extended flying time. Keep in mind the potential issues with goggles fogging and compatibility, but these do not greatly detract from the overall positive experience and high performance of the drone.

  • Perfect starter kit for drone flying
Style: Fly More Combo (3 Batteries)
An amazing package for an amazing drone. I bought this package as a starter kit to get into drone flying. The Avata 2 is the perfect balance between training wheels (which can be taken off) and real capacity. Been flying it for months now. The drone is very fast, can fly high and has good view. The goggles have good reception, can adjust to your eyes and feel nice to wear. I live in a forested area and can fly about 200m between the trees before the signal fails. Flying above the trees I have a range of about 1200m. I haven't tested it in direct-line-of-sight yet. I've flown through light rain, got caught in some leaves and boinked a tree once, but barely any damage. The joystick is very intuitive and I actually often prefer it over the controller due to the simplicity of using it. Using the joystick combined with the goggles head tracking works amazing for sideways shots and exploration. This package comes with a nice compact bag that fits everything. The batteries last about 18 minutes of actual flying when doing so calmly. Swapping batteries is a matter of seconds (restarting the drone a total of about 2 minutes). The battery charger intelligently charges the fullest battery first. ... show more

  • Best Drone I’ve Ever Owned – Highly Impressed Best Drone I’ve Ever Owned – Highly Impressed
Style: Fly More Combo (3 Batteries)
I’m honestly blown away by this drone. It’s an incredibly impressive piece of tech. The maneuverability is outstanding it’s fast, responsive, and feels much more agile compared to other models I’ve owned before. The video quality is absolutely stunning and truly stands out. Every shot looks sharp, vibrant, and professional it’s hard not to be impressed. One of my favorite features is the ability to view everything through the goggles. It feels like you’re actually flying yourself, seeing the world from above in real time. That immersive experience makes it so much more exciting and unique. Overall, this drone exceeded my expectations in every way. Highly recommended for anyone looking for performance, quality, and an unforgettable flying experience. ... show more

  • Great Entry Point into FPV
Style: Fly More Combo (3 Batteries)
This drone is awesome if you want a taste of what flying an FPV drone feels like, but still want the steady handling of a camera drone. It’s definitely quicker and more agile than your typical camera drone, but DJI added a Pause button that basically stops the drone mid-air and makes it hover. If things start to get out of control, just hit pause and it airbrakes immediately. I was honestly surprised at how fast it reacts. It really helps build confidence when you want to push this drone a bit. Battery life isn’t amazing, though. Compared to a regular camera drone, it doesn’t last as long. DJI says you’ll get around 23 minutes per battery, but I usually got more like 15 in real-world use. Thankfully, the bundle comes with three batteries and you’ll need them. On the bright side, the charging hub is great. It can move power around between batteries and top off the one that’s closest to full first. Super useful when you're out flying and need to get back in the air quickly. Moving onto the camera: it’s great for video, just okay for stills. If you’re into action shots, it shines. You can shoot 4K at 100fps for slow motion, or go with 4K/60fps for a smoother, cinematic look (tip: set the shutter speed to 1/120 and convert it to 30fps later. Thank me later). The stabilization is solid too, and you can even turn it off if you plan to add it in post using something like Gyroflow. As for photos, they’re decent but not amazing. This drone doesn’t love to sit still. It sways a bit because it’s so light, which makes getting clean still shots difficulty depending on the weather. If photography is your main goal, you might want to stick with a traditional camera drone. If you’re into FPV or want to learn, Manual Mode is going to be your endgoal. I’m no pro, but I’ve seen some seriously cool footage from people who know how to fly it. I gave it a try myself, and yeah it’s tough lol. Be ready to crash a few times. Don't worry, this drone can take it. Just know you’ll need to adjust a few settings and buy the RC controller separately to unlock full manual flying. Speaking of controllers, your experience really depends on which one you use. The included motion controller is super easy and fun to use. It’s responsive and intuitive enough that almost anyone can pick it up and fly with no problem. It even has built-in tricks like flips and drifts. But if you want more precise control, especially if you're flying in manual, the RC controller is the way to go. Even outside of Manual Mode, it just gives you more control overall. If you're just flying for fun, the motion controller is great. But if you're planning to get serious, the RC is worth picking up. ... show more

  • Quality Fun Drone With Awesome 4K Video
Style: Fly More Combo (3 Batteries)
To start with, I own the original DJI Phantom 4K drone. It is a beast, reliable and still works perfectly. I just hate having to connect to a tablet or phone each and every time. Plus the size, it's far from portable. I wanted a drone that was portable, quick and easy to setup each time with great video picture and of course, it had to be DJI. I was hesitant on this one as I also want the Air 3S when it comes out, if it comes out to the mass market in the U.S. I went ahead and picked this Avata 2 and got the Fly More Combo Pack with 3 batteries. This is the best way to buy this as you will use the extras it comes with and will save over $150 from buying the extras seperately. Even though I own a DJI drone, there was still a bit of a learning curve. My main appeal for this drone was the FPV Goggles you get with it. I am used to a tablet or phone and never used goggles. Man, it is a whole new world. I have used this drone only a few times due to our great Oregon rainy weather, and flying with goggles is so much different. You are part of the flight and not just on the sidelines. The hardest part is learning the distance of the drone from trees, people and surroundings you can't see. You basically see what is in front of you, above you or below you, depending on how you point the camera. It's pretty awesome, but it does take some getting used to. start slow and cautious and be in an open area to start. Have a chair as some people may not be able to stand well as again, you feel you are part of the drone. Joystick is a love/hate relationship. It is new and I am still learning it... a little. I went ahead and bought the RC Controller 3 si i can use manual mode as well as familiar control similar to my Phantom. A beginner that has never used a controller may get used to it faster, but for myself, it is a real challenge. I wish they included the controller and not the joystick. Note: You need to use the joystick for ARCO meneuvers. These are the flips and such. The drone itself is very small compared to my Phantom and is very light. Handles very well and easy to control. The uodating and binding (linking) the drone, controller and/or joystick and goggles was pretty easy. You can use either joystick or controller and if you want to switch, you can do it without programming. The Avata 2 is pretty quiet, quick and very responsive. Battery time states 23 minutes....yeah, in a perfect world. Batteries last me about 17-18 minutes of flight time. That's really not too bad as I shoot 4K video continually and up/down alot as well fast top speed runs. I have only shot 4K 60fps and it is clear, beautiful videos. All and all, this is an awesome and fun drone. Again, get the extra batteries 'Fly More Combo' as you will need them. This combo pack also has a 3 battery charger which makes it easy to charge your batteries. The case it comes with is really good quality and can fit everything inside it, including the extra controller. Overall I rate this drone a 4.5 right now. Had it come with the controller instead of joystick, it would be a solid 5. Highly recommend it. Oh, I am planning on also getting the Air 3S still. I love shooting video and that one has a top of line camera. I am not complaining on this included camera though. It shoots great video. Don't pay more than the $1199 SRP though for this set. I see some outrageous pricing.... ... show more

  • A Step Up From Avata 1, But RTH Problematic
Style: Fly More Combo (3 Batteries)
I am writing this as a relative noob who would not even *think* of flying either Avata in anything but "Normal" mode. Likes: * Feels significantly more precise than Avata 1. * Goggles 3 view seems clearer and more vivid than Goggles Integra. I have trouble imagining how this could be but it is the impression I get when I A/B my Avata with my Avata 2. * Goggles 3 see-thru feature: in color, no less. * Goggles 3 diopter adjustment makes them simpler to demonstrate to somebody. * Goggles 3 comfort level is a bit better. Goggles. Integra are plenty comfortable, but taking the weight off of the bridge of the nose is appreciated. * The padded nylon carrying bag that comes with this bundle is actually real-world useful and much appreciated. And, purely be accident, my Mini 4 Pro fits nicely as well - in the space fot the charger. * ESC beeper saved my butt when I attempted to invoke RTH in backyard brush and it wound up inverted in the weeds. * Batteries are much, much easier to insert and remove than the Avata 1's, which are hard on the fingers to say the least. * Noise Level Significantly less than Avata 1's. Not "Quiet" by any stretch of the imagination, but at least not painful or *too* offensive to bystanders. Mini 4 Pro is still my standard when innocent bystanders are in the area, but at least I can fly this one around the yard without feeling that I am unduely disturbing the neighbors. * Deployment Speed: starting with everything in a closed bag, I can unzip the bag and have this thing in the air in 45 seconds. Dislikes: * Not backwards-compatible. i.e. cannot use Mini 4 Pro with Goggles 3 and Motion Remote 3. * Object avoidence missing. One could argue that, given Avata's legendary durability, object avoidence is not needed - but that lack seems to limit RTH (as below). Seems to me like this can become a big deal if/when RTH is invoked at any significant distance and it gets hung up in some branches. * RTH is still "Dumb". i.e. if RTH is invoked under tree cover, it will rise straight up into the foliage, unlike the Mini 4, which will find an unobstructed way home. * Goggles' intra-pupillary adjustment needs tb stiffened up. As it is, they need tb readjusted with every use bc they slip out of place in the course of normal handling & storage. * Battery charger is slower than Death, in good measure because it still only charges batteries in sequence one-by-one - unlike the Hanatora charger which charges up to three of my Mini 4 Pro batteries concurrently. * Battery charger shows zero info about batteries, unlike Hantora which shows battery temp (charging a too-warm battery can damage it), voltage, %charge, and # of cycles) * Battery charger has no provision for charging to storage level (60%). I am getting about fifteen minutes of real-world flying time - that's starting at 100% and landing when battery is down to 20%. Indoor Hover Test, beginning @99%: 08:30 60% battery 14:05 30% 15:20 24% (Low Battery warning) 16:00 20% 17:00 12% (forced landing) Fix the backwards compatibility, Hantora comes out with a decent charger, and we might move up to 4 stars. EDIT: It finally dawned on me to install the latest version of DJI Assist on my PC and then update the firmware on the Avata 2, Goggles 3, and Morion Controller 3 to the latest-and-greatest. That done, the Goggles 3 and Motion Controller 3 pair and work with my Mini 4 Pro. ... show more
