  • This is a REALLY Good product
I went back and forth about whether to get a robust residential wood chipper ranging from $700 to $1000 or whether to get a much cheaper one with less capacity. It would be great to have one that can handle a 3 inch diameter branch. But the truth is that's pretty uncommon. If a branch is that big I can chainsaw it into bolts and use it for firewood. From a recommendation site I finally decided to get this much lighter powered machine which is supposed to handle branches up to 1 inch diameter. I've seen various reviews which say it conked out or didn't work right. I've had none of those problems. My main reason for writing this review is that it does what it says it does VERY WELL. It's small and light. You can move it around on its wheels or it's light enough to carry over your shoulder. If a branch is small enough to get through the one inch opening it will churn through it no problem. Occasional jams go with the territory. But after processing a lot of branches I think I've had that happen once. I popped it open, removed the branch and was good to go. I was particularly impressed after one big branch and all its secondary branches came down in a recent storm. This isn't really what the SunJoe is designed for. But I used my Sawzall but break it up into small pieces. The primary branch was like 5 inches in diameter. So that won't work. But the great majority of the recent were an inch or under. I did it over two days and it chipped through every one no problem and never overheated or jammed. A bigger machine would have made the job go quicker. But not dramatically. And I found it kind of stunning this machine held up so well and processed so efficiently for a job that most people would have hired a tree company to come out and process. Basically it greatly outperformed my expectations and what I think would be reasonable expectations. Just very high quality. Two additional points. If you put branches with a lot of leaves on them those leaves don't get broken down that much. But to be fair, that's not what the machine is for. Just something to keep in mind. Also, it comes with a paddle to push things into the jaws. It's attached to the machine with a lanyard or small tether. It's quite risky to have any kind of string or rope in the mix with a machine that sucks things into it. So I'd recommend being careful using the paddle or better yet just removed the lanyard and avoid the chance of any mishaps. Again, I felt I was flying blind purchasing a wood chipper with so many contradictory reviews and so many accounts of horror stories where a pricey machine just dies after a few uses. My experience is very different. This is a surprisingly robust and unstoppable machine for such a low price or really for any price. It's not going to chip branches over 1 inch diameter. But at 1 inch and below it's great. ... show more

  • Effectively reduces tree debris down to very little
I have a house built in 1948 along the Stanislaus river. The house is way up in the bank and terraces down to an overflow flood control built by the Army Corps of Engineers. The flood control has not been maintained and we have a lot of overgrown trees and compost piled up on our lowest retaining wall. I needed a wood chipper to help reduce the tree debris down to help me clear it out a little more efficiently. So I bought this one as it fit our budget and our needs. For several months I have been using this every couple of weeks to reduce down fallen branches and twigs. I have found that it does a great job of breaking down the debris into a massively reduced pile. I have found that a standard bucket will fit at the shoot and collect the chippings nicely. Dry branches go through pretty easily, wet ones a bit more slowly. The massively long grape vines will shred in this machine but I do have to stop it periodically to clear out stringing debris that wraps around the center bold on the steel plate that spins and holds the blades. Larger branches approaching the limit size can jam the blades and typically have to be chipped in short bursts to keep the blades from slowing too much and jamming. Gloves are a must. I have gotten blisters holding and feeding branches through the hopper. Safety glasses too as there is always a risk of debris flying. As for safety, this thing is great. There are multiple safety devices and they all work. The thermobreaker will trip if the device jams. There are rubber flaps on the top of the hopper to keep debris from launching out the top, and they work well for small debris. The lockout on the switch works just fine but I never use it. There is also a safety catch on the upper clamshell of the hopper which works very well. The retaining screw for the upper clamshell does take a lot of turns to remove so avoiding jams tends to be a priority for me as I hate having to open that part while working. I always open it at the end to clear it. Now there is one major design defect that resulted in the four star rating. The power switch is not adequately sealed to prevent dust and debris building up in the switch. Once this happens it will interfere with the device turning on. I ended up replacing the switch with a sealed boat switch of the same voltage and amperage specifications. This did require creating a mounting plate (I used some lucite I had around) and filed out the housing to accommodate the new switch. Bolted it in and this works even better than before and now has a light thanks to the aftermarket switch. While this was a bit of work the long term benefits are definitely there. Replacing these switches only costs about $2.50. Replacing the thermobreaker is only about $5 for the part. Overall a great chipper and easy enough to maintain and use. ... show more

  • Perfect for my needs
Super easy to set-up. You are up and running in minutes. I had a pile of shrub bushes in my suburban yard that would have filled a full size pickup bed up to the top of the cab. Most were of about 1.5" diameter or less. Had it all nicely shredded to fit in three empty compost bags. Took me about 2-3 hours of which the most time was spent getting the items prepped and ready to shred. As others have said if it fits in the intake chute it will probably go through. I noticed two items that made all the difference in a successful chipping experience. Max capacity diameter branches (or close to it) need to be very straight and not have protruding branch nubs. I got three total jams. All my fault. Each jam was the result of trying to get a piece of wood through the machine that wasn't straight enough or had too large of a branch nub sticking out. I did not use ear plugs and did not find the machine overly loud. YMMV. I also wore eye protection but did notice that some very small chipped pieces occasionally kicked out of the top of the intake chute and struck me very lightly in the face. A face shield may be something for a user to consider. It will also bang your hands around a bit as you guide a branch into the cutters. After a bit of experience I learned how to hold the branches in the best way to get them through the machine with enough control to minimize the banging around. Overall my wife and I were very impressed by how well the machine worked. It produced some really nice mulch for our garden beds. Don't know why the red unit was so much less $ than the other colors but I was happy for the savings as well. Respect this small electric powered shredder for what it is and I believe it delivers great value for the price. ... show more
