  • Great skillets
I bought the 10.5 and the 12 at the same time. Since I've had them I've cooked (this includes both skillets) eggs (first cook, no sticking), buttermilk biscuits, ribeye steaks, bacon, bacon gravy and homemade corned beef hash. It has performed like you'd expect good cast iron to perform. The cleanup has been pretty easy. The interior surface of the pan has a definite splotchy look, but it's performing as a decently seasoned cast iron skillet should. I really like these skillets and I'm glad I bought them. ... show more

  • Great cast iron skillet
I love my new stargazer cast iron skillet. It came pre-seasoned, but I continued the seasoning process with Crisbee. It cooks very well and I look forward to cooking my eggs every morning. If your food is sticking, it's your technique, not the stargazer pan. Pre-heat, oil pan, cook on lower heat than you are accustomed to, and cook patiently. Cooking with cast iron is not a race or hurried process. Enjoy your new cast iron skillet. ... show more

  • Heavy duty, well made skillet
This is my first experience with using a cast iron pan. Despite being an experienced cook, I was always slightly intimated by cast iron, so I stuck with stainless steel, nonstick, or enamel cookware. Someone gifted me a Lodge skillet several years ago, and it has sat unused in a closet ever since. I could never psych myself to do the seasoning, and I was convinced it was going to be a bear to maintain. However, I have read so many articles touting cast iron's benefits and versatility that I decided I needed to bite the bullet and try it. I was completely unfamiliar with the Stargazer brand, but upon reading about the company and its products, I decided to order this 12-inch skillet. Overall, I have been very pleased with this purchase. I received the seasoned pan, which means it is supposedly ready to go right out of the box. Some reviewers have stated that the factory seasoning was not very good, but I haven't experienced any issues with that. I even used this skillet to make scrambled eggs "as is" (no extra seasoning done by me), and they came out beautifully with virtually no sticking at all. Grilled sandwiches have also done very well. I haven't tried anything more robust yet, but so far so good. I have found it easy to clean the pan once it has sufficiently cooled down. Basic instructions for care come with the skillet, which I found quite helpful being a novice user. It specifically states that the skillet needs to be dried thoroughly before being stored. While the engraving on the bottom of the pan is beautiful, it does retain water that is impossible to remove with just a towel. Thus, do not skip the step of drying your pan on the stove prior to putting it away. The instructions also explain how to do both maintenance and a total re-seasoning. Again, I appreciate having this information printed on a card that I can keep with the pan instead of having to look it up online. Again, having never used another brand, I can't compare this against a competitor in terms of similarities and differences. I can say that this Stargazer skillet is MUCH more attractive than my Lodge one. That just has too much of a campfire/chuckwagon vibe for me. This skillet has a classier, more upscale look, but isn't so fancy that it looks inauthentic. It is heavy duty, well made, attractive, and genuinely seems like it will last forever. I will update this review if any issues with long term use, but for now I am very pleased. ... show more

  • My Favorite Skillet
The media could not be loaded. I adore these Skillets. I am a big fan of cast iron in general and and a big fan of Lodge, Smithey, Field, etc. But these are my favorite. I own two 10.5 inch skillets and two 12.0 inch skillet. I use them every day! Stargazer really has nailed it with all aspects of the design. These are smoother and more refined than any other brand I own, even far more expensive skillets. I love my Smithey skillet but let's be honest... when I bought it, it was more than double the price and the exterior surface was very crudely ground to put it nicely. Both my Smithey and Field lack the precision of the Stargazer skillets as some parts of the walls are different thicknesses on those. The flat bottom (without the heat ring) allows it to heat faster on a glass top stove. The curved circumference-wide lip allows for the best pouring experience while being smoothly curved and elegant, minus the sharp angles of the Smithey which I actually had to sand down because it could actually inflict pain. One thing I love is that I can tap food off my wooden spatulas and spoons on this curved lip without it carving up them up. The sharp angles of my other skillets make it so that the spoons and spatulas get damaged from the tapping. These little details add up! The interior is wonderfully smooth with no disk brake grooves like the others. While I never had any issues with the originals that were smooth like glass, the newer skillets have a micro texture that helps seasoning stick better. This surface is a joy to cook on but especially the easiest to clean. Your metal spatulas won't wake up the house from the grinding as they do with the Lodge skillets. The forked handle works very well to dissipate heat and you don't usually need a handle holder unless you're cooking for a very long time. One thing that is great about its concave design is it works perfectly as a spoon or spatula holder. Another hidden detail that makes a difference! Another thing that is underappreciated about the handle is the large hanging hole they included so that it can hang on a large variety of hooks. This is a major aggravation with many other skillets. And I love the large helper handle that you can really grab on to. You can literally carry this thing around like a piece of luggage which is really great if you have any kind of walk to make while camping or cooking outdoors. You can really feel the attention to detail in every single aspect of the skillet. And while these skillets really do prioritize function, they somehow still look beautiful. The aesthetic may not be old fashioned but it's still really elegant in its own way. It's a really good balance of modern and masculine, solid and tough but also refined and elegant enough to appeal to an expensive kitchen. These would be totally at home over a camp fire with a cheap beer in hand or in someone's fancy kitchen. Can you go get a Lodge and be done with it? Sure. Lodge is great. But over a lifetime, the price becomes totally worth it as all these little details and benefits serve you every day. A few final thoughts... I not only love the skillets and sincerely feel they are better designed at a better price than any other artisinal cast iron brand, I actually really love this company. They are Made in the USA and are always making sure to give special discounts to veterans, special discounts on Veterans Day, etc. The company is very down to earth and I can't speak highly enough about the customer service when I had a post office issue buying one for a friend. Stargazer is one of those special, old fashioned feeling American companies where everyone works really hard and does things the right way. You really want to root for and support them the more you interact and do business with them. Thanks to Peter and Co for the years of great cooking. Next on my list is going to be the Braiser. I can't wait to see what else Stargazer has planned for the future. - Adam Powell ... show more

  • beautiful look to it and cooks food beautifully as well!
I want to first say that I really love the overall look of this skillet. Unlike a lot of the other ones on the market that are just black with a very rough surface. I love this bronze finish, and the smooth surface on the pan itself. It has a lot of heft to it which is nice. I also love how deep the sides are so that you can cook quite a lot in there without worrying about food spilling over. It does have a factory seasoning on it but I have done my own cycle of seasoning with it using flaxseed oil. I've been very impressed by how nonstick the surface is even being able to cook eggs on it without too much of a problem. There do not seem to be any hotspots on the pan, but it distributes the heat very evenly throughout the surface. This is definitely a very important aspect of any cast-iron skillet. This has become my go to skillet for cooking most things on my range. ... show more
