  • Awesome bright crisp picture
This is my third projector and by FAR the best. Much better than my last Epson Home Cinema 5040UB. The Epson lists higher lumens in the specs and pixel shifted 4K. The Sony is MUCH brighter and the picture is FAR better. Sure, this cost more, but for my 180" screen (20' throw) in a room with ambient light, this is so much better. It still isn't great during the day as my shades aren't that good, but my friends appreciate the sharp clear picture even during the (daytime) Superbowl. This projector works best at night for movies and TV. Spectacular. ... show more

  • Excellent 4K projector - brighter than our old 3000 Lumen projector.
Much much brighter than I expected given that we had a 3000 lumen HD projector before. I'd been holding for a native 4K DLP based projector, but our old DLP based projector's fan bit the dust before these existed. So I was thrilled to find Sony making a laser lit, projector with native 4K, using their unique SXRD ( Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) technology. (SXRD explained here https://pro.sony/ue_US/technology/sxrd ). Bottom line is it works extremely well, and given that it is a Sony, I expect higher than normal reliability. There are four minor negatives to this projector; 1) The startup time is slow - easily a minute to turn on. Peculiar. 2) The initial color balance is off until the unit warms up - initially the yellow channel is noticeably brighter than the other colors. 3) The projector is heavy and the ceiling mount attachment points are not well placed for front to back balance which strains the mounts vertical pointing adjustment. 4) The manual describes and I would like to attach some kind of safety cable in-case the ceiling mount fails/comes loose (I used Loctite on the screws). But, there is no independent mount point on the projector for such a safety system. Beyond these minor issues, this 4K projector rocks! So far, very happy with it. ... show more

  • It is native 4K and a Sony!
Color: Black
So it is October 2025 and I was looking to upgrade my home theater. I was thrilled with my audio but felt I could do more with the video. I began looking at my options and much like many of you, I considered several projectors. This one came out a couple of years ago so a refresh is possible. But here is the thing…tried and true tech has its rewards because so many people have put it through its paces. And a good picture is always good. So when it arrived I was surprised how big it was. I had seen YouTube videos but somehow it seemed bigger in that box on my kitchen table. It weighs 28lbs so watch how you hang this thing. I spent a couple of hours re-rigging my Benq projector mount to be sure it was well attached. Plan ahead, calculate the throw for your screen size and be sure you have a stable solution. This thing is pricy and you don’t want it coming down accidentally. So I finally got it rigged up and turned on. Setup was simple yet difficult. Let me explain…the menus set up was quick and easy. Not too many options to get it projecting a 4K video. The problem came when setting it up to fit in the screen. I was expecting a keystone adjustment but this does not work that way. It offsets the lens to make up for your position. So you point the project absolutely straight and level. You then turn some dials (yes manually) to shift the lens. This lets you get it right. It just took me about 30 minutes to get it right. You can do it in five minutes if you just start by setting it level and go from there. Use a bubble level or laser level. Once set up I used my AppleTV 4K and started the first movie. I could see the actor’s pores! The detail is out of this world! Panning is good but there is some small jumps when panning fast. There are options to smooth that out and they work well. The color rendition is stunning. Bright, colorful scenes are easy but how color holds up in shadow detail is key and Sony did it with this one! So the video is spectacular. This is to be expected as it is a Sony. But here is what blew my socks off…this machine is so very silent. I had heard a reviewer complain so I was worried but this thing is very silent. My last projector got a great deal of use and I believe the lamp was getting close to its time to change out. Perhaps this caused it to start losing some of its brightness. With the laser technology, that won’t happen. As an added bonus it has a 20,000 hour expected life span! That means about 15years or so for my watching. In short the menus are simple, the video is absolutely stunning, the fan is silent, the laser technology is awesome and setup should have been simpler had I just started with it straight. As an added bonus, this looks like a Starwars ship hanging in my theater room too. I am thrilled with my purchase. It is expensive but if you look at it based on the number of hours enjoyment it makes it a worthwhile purchase. I always dreamed of a theater like the one I have and worked hard to get it. Now that I have it I want it to be perfect. While I won’t ever reach perfection, this projector is a step in the right direction. ... show more

  • Great projector
Color: Black
All around great projector, HDR is okay, but the best I have seen from a projector so far. Wish it had better web/API controls but responds well to IR emitter automation.

  • Super quality
Color: Black
Very pleased with the Sony projector. The picture quality is breathtaking in comparison to Epson and few others I saw at best buy before deciding on Sony. We are beaming to a city gray painted basement wall for a really huge 200inch screen, and it is amazing.

  • Good picture terrible for a dedicated theater room with 2.35:1 screen
Color: Black
I currently have Panasonic PT-AE800U 1080p Projector, projecting on to a 182 inch 2:35:1 screen. It produces bright but softer images due to the screen size. I have had it for last 8 years. I decided to upgraded to the Sony when I saw it on sale. Compared to the $1600 Panasonic, Sony has no features. 1. There is no HDMI-CEC, I used to use the Apple TV remote to control everything. You can't do that anymore as the projector does not turn on or off without having its remote 2. I bought it knowing Sony has all manual controls, but if Panasonic can give it on a $1600 projector, why not on $6000 projector. 3. There is no lens mask. I used the masking to avoid overfill of the screen when 2.35:1 content switches to 16:9. Unless you spend another $6000 for an anamorphic lens, you can't use it with 2.35:1 screen 4. There is no keystone adjustment. The projector I got had incorrect keystone where the image was wider on top and narrower on bottom unevenly. I was not able to correct it. 5. Only good part is the picture quality. Native 4K made a world difference in picture quality. But some scenes looked digitized. May be the dynamic contrast! 6. It is huge and looks ugly. 7. Remote has backlit button, it turns backlit on after pressing it. Why not turn on backlit as soon as you press any button? 8. Cable connectors are on the side and it will be visible anywhere from the room 9. It is going back! I might get the JVC NZ7! ... show more
