I purchased someone's return Winter Skimmer Plug on Amazon knowingly. When it arrived I saw why it was returned it was made too large that it would not fit the Square Front open area of my Large Above Ground Pool Skimmer for our Pool. Probably didn't fit the Skimmer of who purchased it previously. What I needed to do was I needed to trim it to fit. That isn't something a consumer should have to do with it to get it to work. I used a Square on it and a Razor Knive to take about a 1/4" off one of the sides of the Sponge type of material. I went with taking off half of what I measured to be to much being this product need to compress to give a good seal. The way it was made there was way to much material there from the factory to compress so I took a chance and trimmed it and it works fine. For the price Amazon charged me for someone elses return Winter Skimmer Plug I made it work but I don't recommend it to others. You should be able to purchase one that fits the first time being there are basically only 2 basic sizes of Above Ground Pool Skimmers Large and Small. This one should of been made to fit right from the get go into a Large Skimmer. It works for me now. ... show more

I like the concept of not having to drain our pool every winter. Tried this plug for the first time. It seemed to have sealed nicely against the pool wall and no water was visibly leaking. However, after a month it began to leak, slowly, and eventually had a skimmer of frozen water as the leak would slowly freeze. Not sure what the answer is but don't like risking a frozen skimmer. ... show more

I installed this plug 2 months ago and I haven't noticed an issue with water leaking. It's possible that some drops have gotten through based on what I have seen in the skimmer basket, but it's nothing to worry about. All I wanted was to keep as much of my balanced water in the pool as possible and to keep out critters over the fall, winter, and part of the spring.     • Easy gadget to stop water from exiting pool

We never used this type of gadget to seal the wide-mouth skimmer on previous pools, always had a stainless steel plate on a gasket, that you needed to remove half the screws in the skimmer face-plate, then install the gasket and plate with the removed screws back into their original holes - kind of a pain in the butt. Nothing could be simpler than this unit which seemed to be the only general type available for our new pool. We just matched the exact type of plug with the model number of the skimmer and it appears to work great. We have a 21' Wilbar above ground pool with Hayward filter, wide mouth skimmer. It fit snugly. BUt since it is a closed cell foam rectangle piece on the back of flat plastic plastic that holds it into the skimmer, I don't know how many seasons it will last. Hopefully more than one. If not, we will go back to plugging the bottom of the skimmer. For now, it's great, but it's only December and it has not been very cold here. ... show more
