I wanted to write this and add some more information onto some of the other reviews hoping to help others who may be considering this product. First of all, this is a Hayward product. They don't have an impeccable reputation for no reason. The skimmer is solidly built, the door has a clever retaining design making it easy to install/remove from either the inside or the outside of the skimmer, and it comes with the return nozzle and all the fittings you will need for 1 1/2" flexible lines. (Well... except for the hose clamps) The basket is plastic, as they always are, but this one seems substantial and I expect it will take a considerable amount of "empty the basket beatings" before I have to worry about looking for a replacement. As for the specifics of my install... I installed this on a 12' metal-frame Intex pool. (See my customer shot above) Other reviews mentioned this working on similar pools so I tool the chance figuring it would be close. I'm really glad I did. The Hayward was about 3/4" of an inch taller than the crappy Intex skimmer that the pool came with. I simply took the gasket and traced the inside on the pool liner after removing the Intex skimmer. A utility blade made a nice, clean cut taking about 1/2" off the top and the bottom of the opening. I used a drill bit to create holes for the mounting screws as they (of course) didn't line up with what was there. The Hayward skimmer comes with a single, silicon u-channel gasket that fits inside the opening and completely seals it against the skimmer and the face plate. I really like this design because there is no way water is going to leak like you could get when a two-piece foam gasket starts to break down. Assembly was straight forward and except for ruining a socket wrench because I used it underwater on the lower screws, everything went together very easily and was very solid when assembled. The original Intex skimmer had a stand-off on the lower part that kept the skimmer from torquing under it's own weight. The Hayward doesn't have this but it may be something to consider adding. With the pool full, the liner is pushed out and keeps the skimmer upright so I don't think the kick-stand is required in this case but if you drain the pool for the winter, the skimmer may dip and strain the mounts without something to support it. Would this cause problems? Probably not but I don't see a reason to strain the liner if I don't have to. In my case, I used the hose as a means to support it but a block of wood or a piece of PVC would probably do the trick as well. The return nozzle is standard Hayward design. There is a retainer ring with rubber gaskets that sandwiches the liner. Again, on the Intex pool I had to open the hole just a hair (maybe an 1/8" on the bottom) to get the nozzle to comfortably fit. There is a retaining ring on the pool side and an adjustable nozzle that allows you to direct the stream based on your pool configuration. The included hose adapter would position the hose in-line with the nozzle which, in my case, would make it stick out from the side of the pool. I simple got a 1 1/2" threaded PVC adapter and a right-angle to orient the hose vertically. Since everything is standard 1 1/2" it worked great. The last thing I wanted to mention is the vacuum plate. At first glance I was disappointed because the nozzle on it looks to be 1 1/4" and I have a 1 1/2" vac hose. However, on further inspection it is actually a stepped design with accepts both size hoses! Ingenious! I'm happy to say that it works perfect with my 1 1/2" vac hose (with rotating end) giving a nice, snug fit. With a sufficient pump behind the setup, it works amazing. Overall, this is a great product. I'm extremely happy I bought this and I'm super pleased that it works so well with my Intex pool. This was one part of my "sand filter upgrade" that I made to the Intex pool this year and I'm so happy about all of it that I could dance.

I had one of those skimmers that hung on the rail of my intex pool. It wasn't doing the best job, kept floating away from the wall and would release the debris back into the pool when my pump was off. Not only that, but it reduced the power of my pump. Once my warranty expired on my pool I ordered this bad boy. Installation is tedious, but not hard. I'm a single woman and I had no problems installing this. Installation tips I have to offer: The holes on the skimmer are not pre threaded. Take the time before you install it to screw in the screws in each hole to form the threads. This will make your Install much easier. Trust me. For the love of all that's holy: DO NOT CUT THAT GASKET. I don't care what the dude on YouTube says. Don't do it. The gasket is designed with a purpose. Drain the water from your pool under its an inch below the height of the bottom of where the skimmer will be installed. You want water in the pool to keep the liner stretched. I used an awl (like 3 bucks at walmart to Pierce the holes for the screws. I then installed the entire skimmer minus the gasket. Once that was in place, I used a utility knife to cut the opening. Then I removed the skimmer, and inserted the Un cut gasket into the opening. The gasket is designed specifically to prevent the possibility of leaks and cutting it opens that possibility up and defeats the purpose. Once the gasket was in place, I installed the skimmer again, installed the hoses using a hose converter for my 1.25 inch hoses and filled the pool until it was half way up the skimmer. I plugged both of the old outlet ports and turned on my pump. Not one single leak. Not one. This skimmer has made keeping my pool clean a breeze. There's two trees above my pool so that's not to be taken lightly. I went from hand skimming for 30 min a day and vacuuming daily to vacuuming every couple days with NO hand skimming! Best investment you can make for your pool. I went for the square opening because my pool is only 12x30 but if it were larger I would get the wide mouth opening. If you're using this with a soft sided pool, I'd recommend finding something that will prop the skimmer at a 90 degree angle because the soft wall will let it tip at a weird angle which does affect performance. For my pool, a small plastic patio table right under it did the trick. Hayward has a reputation in the pool industry for a reason. The quality and fit just can't be beat.

This has saved me countless hours of work! It helps to keep my water much clearer! I am happy the body of the unit sits outside the pool instead of inside like some other models. I had the inside type before and the kids kept knocking it around. The Hayward is out of the way of their activities. It was easy to install, although a bit scary to cut into my liner! I used it on one pool for a season, then reinstalled it on my newer pool. It’s very sturdy. Seems well made. Never leaks. Looks nice. I do use skimmer socks to catch even smaller particles than the basket alone would do. I just make sure to check it daily and change the sock frequently to maintain free flow. Highly recommend!

Great purchase. Keeps all the little bugs and trash out of the pool that were a pain to skim out every time you wanted to swim. Simple installation but just do a little plumbing planning before you install it and it will make things much easier. I used a cutoff between it and the pump and now I can do anything I need to the pump by just shutting off the valve. Also nice to have the extra strainer basket before the pump strainer. Between this and the robot pool cleaner cut my maintenance time to basically just checking water quality. Love it!

If you have an above ground pool you struggle to keep clean or work too hard to maintain, just order this now. You will not be disappointed. Let's break review and install into two parts.... first: We have a BestWay 24' oval pool that after trying several pump systems, we just couldn't keep clean fast enough for kids to use it. It was a daily burden trying to skim, vac and clean cartridge filters....even oversized cartridge filters to prevent the dreaded green water taking over. With a 3000gph pump, this thing cleans to pool to crystal clear in 1 hour max, and that is using skimmer input only and two side ports plugged with those T shape caps. When you consider you can set the pump timer (Intex sand unit around .7-.8HP) to 1 hour maybe twice per day, the electrical savings is considerable versus running a smaller pump it came with for 8hrs and not getting results. Second - Install: Seriously, take your time but do not be afraid of trying this. Those pool liners are much tougher than you think. Here are some tricks to help you get this right. You want this basket on the most vertical part of the liner opposite the return water jet on the pool. You may have a directional jet which you should point away from this basket and then mount the basket on the opposite end of the pool. Assemble the trim ring with all the screws loosely before you do the install. Do not tighten them. The screws cut the threads in the plastic holes and you want this done before you're fumbling with screws in the pool. Then remove and set aside. Remember the water can't go to the top of the skimmer opening so you have to mount it higher on the liner. I put the top screw holes between the first two rows of "stitching" where the liner changes from white to the outside pool color. Fill the pool at least half way. It needs to have weight on the liner and be stretched out. Get in the pool, place the inner trim square where you know the basket will sit more vertical on the outside (towards the 45 degree sides of the end if you have and oval pool with U pipes along the sides), use the seam as alignment, then mark the top and bottom outer screw holes with a sharpie. Set the ring aside. Here is where I divert from suggestions I've seen elsewhere. A) I don't want to be trying to force a "blunt object" through the liner as the directions state. That is crazy. B) I don't want to cut little "X's" for screw holes to encourage ripping in those directions. So..... with a few extra hands, get a 1/8-3/16" size flat punch or I suppose you could cut an 8D or larger nail flat, grab it tightly in a vice grip (did I say tight?!?), heat it with a propane torch (helper holds torch on rail of pool) then use punch to melt a clean round hole through those 4 sharpie marks. Re-heat for each one. Carefully have helper set punch outside pool. Install the basket without the gasket seal with the 4 screws and make them snug but not fully tightened. Don't split the gasket like a reviews and videos show. There is no reason to do that. Change out your utility knife blade to new, double check you got the inner and outer basket lined up and didn't accidentally put the screws in misaligned. Cut an "X" slowly in the center of the opening so you can see into the basket (see both sides of the cut to verify parts are aligned perfectly as you are cutting) and pull tension on the 4 pieces as you cut along the inside trim plate in the pool slowly and carefully, and it will cut exactly to the size of the basket opening. Use the inner plate as your guide to shave the liner tight to the plastic housing. Go slow. Take a breath...now.... Get the punch and helper again, heat it and melt through the remaining screw holes using the installed plate as your guide. Just pop through and don't melt the basket housing or inner plate. Put the torch and punch far away when done. Remove the 4 screws while supporting the outer housing, set aside and now install the gasket into the opening. Line up housing and trim ring inside pool, install all screws and snug them up only. Don't overtighten them. You can always go a 2nd round if it drips outside. Now my only criticism of this basket....the connection. The supplied 1.5" threaded to barbed adapter is not great. The threads are loose even with 8-9 layers of teflon tape and there is only 1 barbed ridge on the fitting. There are threads on the outside of downspout, but after ordering numerous adapters, none of them worked well. Why, Hayward? Just put normal 2" PVC thread on it....that is what we all want and need. You can maintain your larger metric fine threat proprietary connector above the 2" threads just fine. We all want a way to get to a 2" PVC ball valve or gate valve. 1.5" PVC ball valves are rarely "full flow" and restrict the opening. As a workaround, stop at your hardware store and get a male threaded 1.5 to hose barb adapter, 2 clamps and more Teflon tape. Also save yourself $65 in parts and get a $3 "utility tub stopper" which fits perfectly under the basket to block water for pump/filter work. I put a 3" chlorine tablet in the basket which has kept the pool at the perfect level for 2 weeks now. Run filter and enjoy the thought of never touching that skimmer net.

This product is amazing. What a game changer. I went from having to skim my pool for bugs or in five times a day to not having to do it at all. Love it totally love it once you watch the right video. It’s easy to put in. I did have to buy a converter to go down to my one and a quarter inch hose, but that was at a pool shop so easy was cheap. The only thing we had to do is cut the gasket because we put it in with water in the pool and that was easy. It’s surprisingly easy to puncture a hole through the wall so I just used a punch and then followed in with the screws and the water didn’t leak out very bad before we were able to screw it in, but the hardest part about the whole thing was getting all the bolt screwed in it took forever because you can only do so much and then you have to move onto the next one you don’t wanna screw one all the way in because it won’t go in nice and flat otherwise I couldn’t have made a better purchase for this Pool by the way, I had an Intex above ground 24 foot round pool once you get the gasket screwed in all the way any leaks totally stopped then I had all the confidence in the world to cut the main hall out, and it was very easy

This is an excellent product and highly recommended to replace the over-the-railing basket skimmer that comes with above ground pools. The only issue is the minimal instructions. Must read between the lines and use common sense. The gasket is made like a butterfly gasket that must be intact if you have a double hull pool, or like a vinyl liner with metal or plastic outside support. My Intex pool is just the vinyl liner, so I split the gasket carefully and installed it without draining any water. The water line was half way up the skimmer, but not a drop was spilled installing this. Just wait until all screws are tight to cut the vinyl liner - common sense, make sure the hose is connected first!! Be sure to install the flapper gate BEFORE putting any screws on or starting install. Just a little tricky to hold it in place. 2 people works best, but I installed everything myself with no issues. Must REALLY hold the outside unit TIGHT against the gasket when putting in each of the screws as they cut their own threads. Screw them down tight - the tough plastic will take it. I put in the 4 corner screws in first, starting with top 2 above the water line, and left all just slightly loose until all screws were started. It says to make holes for screws with blunt object - but that won't work as vinyl liner is tough. I used a small drill bit, much smaller than screw, but used pliers instead of getting my drill wet. Just held bit in the pliers and pushed and twisted. The first couple is when 2 people really helps, but even alone I did it easily. Then tightened them all down. The adapter to attach a vacuum hose comes with and works great. I didn't think it would seal well as it is just plastic to plastic, not rubber gasket, but works fine - the suction holds it firmly in place. A little tricky - put adapter on first without the hose, moving it around the flapper, then connect the hose. Make sure vacuum is in the water so it doesn't suck air. The parts of this unit are very heavy plastic. Nothing flimsy. Flow-through rate increased, as I can tell by the higher pressure and flow coming out the exit valve. A new one comes with this, but I didn't install, just used the old one. I will get a ball valve shut-off at Lowe's or Home Depot to install where hose connects. Good for doing any hose work or working on pump or filter. This is really a bargain.

This makes a huge difference in my Coleman/Bestway 18 'x 48" pool. Previously I was using the two suction ports for the return back to the filter, but I found that even with a 16" sand filter and pump there was still a lot of small debris on the surface of the water. The original suction ports are so far below the water line that there was no skimming of the surface, other than by hand. Now those two ports are capped and my only return is through this skimmer. Although a bit nerve-wracking because I had to cut a hole in my pool, this was surprisingly easy and quick to install. My wife was amazed that I didn't mess the whole thing up, after I told her I was going to cut a hole in the liner! The hardest part was figuring out how high to mount the skimmer, but more on that below. To install this I followed some advice that I had found in other reviews, and cut the butterfly gasket in half. I mounted the skimmer before cutting out the actual hole in the pool. I honestly didn't even drain water out of the pool to do this, but it was already a little low. Here are the steps I took: 1. Held the inside-the-pool bracket up at the spot where it would be once mounted, but on the outside of the pool instead of the inside. 2. Marked the holes with a sharpie. 3. Carefully cut the butterfly gasket in half along the crease, so I had the outside part separate from the inside part. 4. Punched through each hole (very carefully!) with a smaller phillips head screwdriver. 5. Placed the inside part of the gasket on the inside bracket and aligned it inside the pool with the holes. 6. Placed a screw through from the inside, through the bracket and gasket, through the pool so it stuck out the outside. 7. Placed the outside part of the gasket (make sure it is right side up!) over the protruding screw, then held up the outside part of the skimmer so it was aligned with the screw. 8. Started the first screw, and then proceeded to push the others through in the same manner until they were all in place. 9. Tightened down all of the screws as much as I could. 10. At this point I disconnected the pump suction hose that had previously been connected to my old suction ports. Since the hose did not fit the threads on this skimmer, I ended up cutting the end off of the hose and sliding it over the adapter nipple that was provided with the skimmer. Then I used a hose clamp to secure it. 11. After making sure the hose was re-connected to the pump, and the connection to the skimmer was tight, it was time to cut the hole in my liner. I simply took a relatively sharp knife (that I didn't care about getting wet) and cut out a square on the inside of the pool. I slid the knife blade right along the inside edge of the bracket, all of the way around. 12. After seeing that my pool didn't immediately shred itself to pieces, I checked for leaks and found none. Then I installed the floating door and skimmer basket, and that was it! The only issue that I have found so far is that I may have placed the skimmer too high on the side of my pool. I got my pool used from someone else, so it is no surprise that it seems to be leaking somewhere. This is not significant, except that it can get a little too low for the skimmer. If the water level gets too low, the skimmer will start causing the pump to suck air into the system. Overall I would totally recommend this skimmer!
