I like this trash can better than I thought it would. We've used simple human kitchen trash cans for many years. I've had stainless steel for a while but when my old faithful died I found that the prices have gone up quite a bit for the quality stainless steel so I reluctantly ordered the simple human plastic can. I have been pleasantly surprised. I got it in the brown and it blends in well in my kitchen area. I move my trash can back and forth to my sink from time to time and I'm enjoying the much lighter weight of the plastic. The movement of the lid mechanism is very reliable. Some people have said in their reviews that the trash can moves around when you press your foot down on the foot pedal, but my model has a metal brace at the bottom that prevents the trash can from moving when you step directly down on the floor pedal (not at an angle). The lid locking mechanism works well although we don't really currently have a need for it. At first we were locking it accidentally because we were leaning into the trash can, gently touching the lock with our leg when we put our foot on the pedal. It wasn't a big deal to avoid this when we realized what we were doing. Another thing I really like about this trash can is that the common-brand kitchen bags I buy at the grocery store have a perfect tight-but-not-too-tight fit so changing the trash bag is a snap. The trash bag doesn't ever fall down into the can. The bag stays put even if there's a heavy load of trash in the bag. ... show more

It’s been kicked, thrown down stairs, and knocked over countless times; yet it’s still just as functional now as it was when it first arrived. I don’t think I realized just how high quality simple human was before I bought it. I remember thinking it was a good price considering the functionality and aesthetics, and that maybe I could get 1-3 years out of it. But more than 5 years later, it’s still my daily (kitchen) trash can. That said, it does have scuffs, and some of the silver paint on locking mechanism has worn off some (probably from being kicked down the stairs a dozen times.) But for $50 this trash can is a steal for the quality. I know some will think that even $50 is too much for a trash can, but it’s certainly worth it. It’s ergonomic, it’s practical, and it always works as intended. It’s especially easy to clean too. Considering the build quality, functionality, and practicality of this trash can; I highly recommend it. It’s nice having such a well made trash can that is high quality, and that has a fashionable aesthetic. But best of all, is not having to concern yourself with taking the utmost care of it. You can just forget about it for 5 years, treat it extremely poorly, and it’ll still be working great. 👍 I only reviewed this now after I began renovations on my home, and I decided to check the date when I’d bought the can out of curiosity. After realizing the quality of it, I decided to buy a new simple human trash can. It’s the slightly bigger (55L) matte black step can. I didn't want to waste cabinet space by having a pull out trash can but wanted something nicer for sitting at the end of our island. Needed something pet proof too as our small dog tends to knock trash cans over just because he's upset when we leave him alone for an hour or two, and this does the trick with nice locking ability on it, would be good also to help keep toddlers out of the trash. I also like that you don't have to use the foot pedal to raise the lid - it is very easy to lift up by hand as that is what my elderly mother-in-law was used to and can easily throw something away without having to remember to step on the pedal, but I love the convenience of having a foot pedal if my hands are full of scraps and I can't or don't want to touch the lid. It is nice having a lid to keep the garbage inside out of sight and cut down on kitchen odors until I get my teenage son to finally take the trash out, lol. ... show more

This trash can is a great option for anyone looking for a stylish, functional, and convenient trash can for their kitchen that will not break the bank. We are family of 3 and the size of the trash can is perfect for us. The ability to open the lid without hands is very handy. The size is both suitable for reasonable amount of trash but also it is still relatively easy to clean and wash this trash can. Previously, I have owned much bigger trash can and cleaning it was a pain. Since cleaning it was hard it eventually started to stink. This 50 liter simplehuman trash can is kinda ideal size. Also, I love the aesthetics of this trash can - specifically the white color. This color is so versatile it complements any decor. The quality of this trash can is top-notch which is the case for all simplehuman products. In my humble opinion the price to quality ration of this trash can is perfect. I always thought a pretty stainless steel trash can with touchless operation was what I wanted in my kitchen. I was wrong. I had to throw my out because it never held the bag in place, it was always falling into the can; eventually, the electronics stopped working correctly; and I couldn't use the total capacity of the trash bag because the can was shaped like a tube. This trash can, however, is fantastic. It has a slow close lid, a lock on it to keep pets out, a separate lock on the lid to hold it open, the opening of the can itself is large enough to hold the bag taught and it doesn't fall it, and the shape of the can itself allows for full use of the trash bag capacity. This is a GREAT trash can and for the price, you cannot beat it! ... show more
