The trash can itself works wonderfully. It looks and feels durable, has a very sturdy pedal, and rests beautifully against the wall. Regular kitchen trash bags (the flex kind) grip very well and don’t need any kind of band to hold the bag. (I’d imagine any 13-gallon bag would be fine because of the shape of the mouth of the can.) this makes it easy to take the trash out. The lock on the front is very helpful for keeping a small 10-pound dog out, and that feature was the reason we bought it. I was hoping my dog would lose interest because of the lid AND the lock. No such luck—I’m not sure how he got the can all the way across the kitchen while I was at work, but the lock held tight, and even after being (possibly) kicked around the kitchen, the can looks great. The lock will definitely not be released by a dog or a child; it takes a bit or force and dexterity of force to unlatch it. It’s not as difficult as it sounds, though. I’d definitely recommend this can if you’re looking for a sturdy and attractive trash can that gets the job done. Just don’t forget to lock it before you leave if you have a crazy pup! This is a replacement for a 20+ year old trash can of a different brand, so we just wanted something basic—with a little upgrade. This fits the bill. ... show more

    • The best!! Keeps your dog out of the garbage!

Finally! My dog can no longer get in my trash can! My dog is very smart. She can open cupboards, doors, etc. Which was a problem because she ate out of the garbage can constantly. No matter where we put it! It was the worst! Out of desperation, we bought this trash can, drawn to the locking lid feature. We were not disappointed! She can’t get in the can at all. It’s so sturdy and heavy duty, she can’t knock it over or get the lid open. We don’t even use the locking feature, and she still can’t get in. I literally don’t worry about her getting in the garbage at all anymore! No matter how appealing the garbage is that I put in the trash, I know she won’t get it. 100% worth it! My quality of life has improved drastically! haha But even if you don’t have a dog problem, this is a great garbage can. The foot pedal is awesome, it’s super durable, it contains smells, cleans easily, doesn’t stain, holds garbage bags well, and is the perfect size for staying out of the way up against a wall but still being a good size. Honestly at 30 I get so excited over things like trash cans and toilet seats lol but seriously this trash can is so nice it’s plastic so I think it will hold up better I’ve had many stainless steel ones in the past and feel like they get dented quite easily. It has a nice foot petal that feels very sturdy. Also didn’t even realize their was a wall bumper on the back of the can that you pull up and it keeps it the correct distance from the wall as well as keeping your wall safe from food particles, dings, etc very lovely little feature. Would purchase again! Also it opens quickly but the slow close feature is excellent it works well and I don’t have to worry about my kids getting their fingers smashed! Also holds a lot of trash seems quite thick for a plastic can also. Love it! ... show more

This was my first simplehuman trash can and I'm VERY impressed. I have other products by them that have always delivered but I didn't know what to expect from the trash can since I haven't had much luck with other brands in the past. The can is sturdy with a thicker plastic and very durable. I love the quiet soft close lid and the wider foot pedal. The lid has a lock but I don't use it since I don't have little ones anymore or pets. However, if you do, this would be very helpful. The trashcan has a "guard" on the back which allows the can to sit an inch or two from the wall--I love this! My favorite feature of all is the NON-SLIP bags. I've always had this issue with other can I've used in the past, and I absolutely hate it. But This was my first simplehuman trash can and I'm VERY impressed. I have other products by them that have always delivered but I didn't know what to expect from the trash can since I haven't had much luck with other brands in the past. The can is sturdy with a thicker plastic and very durable. figured it out, and now I don't have to worry about this anymore. I purchased their liners but have not used them yet, I have a large box of Kirkland 13 gallon bags from Costco which fits perfectly and I've had no issues with the bags slipping. So, funny story. I bought this because my husky somehow BROKE my other trash can by stepping on the pedal too hard while the lid was locked. And he did that because he wanted to dig for trash. He also has a bad habit of knocking over trash cans to get into them. So my solution was to buy a trash can with sturdier lid locking mechanism, and to place 2 heavy bricks on the bottom of it. So far, so good! He hasn't knocked this one over. Anyway, onto the product. Pros: - Aesthetically, the design is nice. - Silent lid operation. Now this one surprised me. I didn't even know the trash can had this feature until I tried it out and the lid gently closed down. Amazing. No more funky smells getting aired out as the lid closes. Plus it just seems so.. elegant. - The slide lock is super strong. Like, almost too secure. See cons list for more details. - Good quality. I was afraid my bricks would eventually damage it, but I've had this trash can for awhile now and it's holding up just fine. Cons: - Price. Well, you can also see it as an investment in quality I guess. - Might have to experiment with different trash bags to get the right fit for the unique shape. - The slide lock is difficult to push and pull. It makes it super secure, but dang does it make a loud sound when I slide it shut! And to get it open I can't just use one hand (not even with the bricks weighing the trash can down). I have to hold the trash can with my other hand to slide the lock open or else I'll just drag the entire trash can. That's how secure it is. - While it seems like the trash can will fit nicely against walls, you actually have to leave some space for the lid. When the lid opens, it pushes the wall and the trash can outwards if you don't leave some space between the trash can and the wall. I hope the product team will deal with this eventually. Still, in comparison to other brands, which I've had my fair share of experience with, this one truly stands out. I've tried those with motion sensors, and while they feel futuristic, nothing beats the reliability of a simple step mechanism. I luv my new garbage can. Honestly when I first got it I was very unimpressed. I then took all the stickers off and got to know it and it is really well made and very simple and intuitive, yes intuitive. The lid when it auto lowers is quiet and smooth and it can be locked when kids or animals are around as well as having the option of opening the lid by hand. I especially luv the back bar that sits up against the wall so the lid will never hit the wall because you aren’t playing guessing guess. Furthermore for as lightweight as it is, it is stable which really impresses me. The standard 13 gallon bag fits snuggly on without coming off the top lip in the bucket. The price is great the one this replaced had a bigger price tag. And lastly, I need you to sit down for this one. I got the indigo blue,,, AND IT MATCHES MY BLUE HYACINTH MACAW,,,mic drop GREAT PRODUCT ... show more

Never thought I’d write a review on a trash can, but this one is special! We have a 13 year old Border Collie that came to us with a taste for trash. This. Can fits a 13 gallon bag perfectly. It has a slide-lock that keeps the dog out even if it gets knocked over. If you choose to open the lid manually it stays open until you choose to close it. An exceptional product! ... show more

So, here I am reviewing a TRASH can. Yep. But I have to, because after spending big bucks at Costco & other places on fancy "step-to-open" trash cans that do not last and don't work well, this one is a winner. LOVES: - Easy step opens the lid smoothly. There's no "pop open" effect. - When you release the pedal, the lid closes SLOWLY. It does not slam down. - The trash container is well-designed to hold a full 13-gallons of trash. Competitors may 'advertise' 13-gallons, but their products don't always hold that. As a result, we were going through more bags than we needed to. Not so with this unit. A 13-gallon bag gets filled up! - There's a space-bar that can be lifted up on the upper back of the unit that keeps the unit a few inches away from the wall. This saves any paint or texturing you have on your walls (a big plus for our kitchen). - It just "feels" durable. Unlike other trash cans we've bought, this one 'feels' very well-made, like it's going to last a long time. - The 'semi-round' feature allows for maximum capacity while not sticking out too far from the wall. DISLIKES: - The fact that I didn't find and purchase this trash can earlier in my life. :-) This unit also has a lock feature on the front lid that's designed to keep dogs out of the trash, but since our dogs are trained NOT to go into the trash, it's not a feature we need. That said, we've tested it to see if small kids could figure out the locking mechanism, and so long as we didn't teach them that there's a lock on the thing, it actually serves to keep younger munchkins out of trash. But I suppose all it would take is a slightly more curious, determined, and/or older child, and that lock will no longer work to prevent their opening it up. :-) Still, for dogs, it seems like it would work well to distract them -- especially if you train them well.
