I'm restoring a 1960's Clausing lathe and really wanted a way to tell level with high accuracy. I saw these and was very interested and finally decided to take the plunge. The Good: It seems to be very accurate and repeatable. I did have to calibrate, but didn't find it any big deal. Just be sure you have a very smooth and close-to-level surface with zero movement. Also, be patient. After any adjustment be sure you wait about ten seconds for the level to stabilize. It is by no means instant. In fact, it's pretty slow. I'm sure they are heavily filtering the sensor results to ensure stability. I found it repeatable to that 0.0002"/ft specification. The Bad: It's not a professional product. The base is aluminum and is cast and no machined in any way. The picture is after I put it on a blued surface plate. I had to actually lay the blue on a bit thick to see the contact points. There are three! The base should be cast iron and should be precision ground. Since I'm working with scraped surfaces, those contact points are going to be up and down and not reliably sitting on the bearing surfaces. And it's short, so any error is magnified. I'll probably look at fine sanding it so the flats are actually flat. I don't know that I would trust the v-groove for much of anything. The Ugly: Charging for the app. You get one "redemption" code when you buy the device. You can't install on another phone without paying for the app. What a money grab. In the next year I'll probably upgrade my phone and will have to spend money on the app. Why? It's a $400 product. The app is useless without the $400 product! Charging for the app may bring in a small amount of money, but at the expense of annoying every single customer. If they want to charge for an enhanced app, no problem, but the app to use the product should be free! ... show more

I purchased the 1500xy to level tool changers and shuttle systems for VTC and HBM machining centers. Overall I found the level and associated app easy to use and reasonably intuitive. The level arrived out of calibration. Took it to a precision granite square and went through the calibration process. The level reads and repeats within reason now. Checked the four pads on the bottom for flatness. Could barely see where the level touched the blued surface plate. There was only a hair line of contact on the outer edge of each pad. This isn’t good for precisely leveling anything other than maybe precision ground surfaces. I Polished the level base to get better surface to surface contact and recalibrated. The level has an LED display that only reads in degrees and only displays one axis at a time. You have to have the app to see both X and Y at the same time. The app also allows you to display degree, mm/m, or in/ft. This functionality should really be available without the app. For my applications I find the apps bubble level to be most useful. I’ve only used the level two times so far and haven’t run into any issues with the level or apps performance. ... show more

These levels are awesome and great for high accuracy tuning. Only thing I wish was changed was the the clearness of the user manual when it comes to using/not using bluetooth.

I had no problem setting up the level with their android app - make sure to download the free version and then unlock. The quick-start instructions could clarify that point. Calibration is a snap, and for me, the Bluetooth interface is terrific. I'm mobility challenged, and it's great to place the level and view the results on my phone. I am primarily using the 2-axis function. I'm still using my Wyler spirt level 53-422-525, but this new addition is very usable, and as time goes on, I can see it replacing the Wyler as my confidence builds. Two comments, it would be nice to include the manual or at least make reference to the manual being available at their web site, and the display on my unit blinks off when connected via BT — assuming that's by design and not a problem it would be nice to have the option to run both at the same time. Not a deal-breaker, but it would be nice. I would buy it again. ... show more

Postive: Most importantly for me, the precision and accuracy of the DWL1500XY seems to be as advertised and it's serving its intended purpose in the lab (we use it to help set up an IMU calibration tool). The unit is quite well constructed and the protective case is more than adequate. The unit is pretty straightforward to use with or without the app after you've read and digested the instructions. Negative: I don't like that it must be purchased separately for any device with which you intend to use the level. It seems to me that I've already paid for this tool once and don't think having to pay another $27 to be able to load it onto another device is at all reasonable. I'm not the only person to use this tool in our organization on a given day, and it's quite odd to treat a shop tool like a piece of office software. Conclusion: I feel like I got my money's worth. It's a good product, but please, Digi-Pas...drop the per-installation charge on the app. ... show more

This is a level as opposed to a digital protractor. As a level, this DWL-1500XY is remarkable. It is truly usable to the third decimal which is 1/1000 of a degree. To put that in perspective, at 5 inches (about the distance between the pads in the X direction), 0.001 degree difference is 0.0000873 inches change in thickness under the pad. So even a tiny piece of dust could change the reading. So I tested it on a 3/4 inch thick glass dining room table. Over 10 inches, I took readings every inch and found that the glass top was not flat but bending slightly. But the best part is that the readings were repeatable.
