  • Easy to use and maintain; effective cleaning performance
I couldn’t decide between the corded Hyrovac and the corded Bissell Crosswave until I saw a head-to-head comparison video of the two on Vacuum Wars. The key points that swayed my decision to the Hydrovac were the much easier filter cleaning, the easier self-cleaning, the better/smoother swivel action, and the fact that, despite less raw power, the effective cleaning ability was a draw between the two. Add to that the much lower price for the Hydrovac and the decision was easy. So far I’ve been very pleased with this. It’s easy to use, does a very nice job on tile floors, and is easy to maintain. The cons for me are mostly along the lines of build quality issues. For example, the filter holder is not all that sturdy, so you need to take care when opening it to not break the plastic tabs. But, I have two other Shark vacs, and while they both have some less than ideal build quality issues, neither has failed on me yet. So I’m hoping for an equally long life from this Hydrovac. You can use other cleaners in this provided they are low/no suds. The Shark cleaner works well, but it’s quite pricey. There are other equally good cleaners from Hoover, Bissell and commercial cleaners (such as Ludmark) that cost less per use and work just fine in the Hydrovac. You don’t want to use an acidic cleaner (such as vinegar) or any cleaner that has suds since those will damage the water pump in the Hydrovac. It’s well worth picking up a spare set of filters and rollers. While the roller gets pretty well cleaned in the self-clean cycle, it’s still worth giving it a good hand wash. Plus, it’s not recommended to store the machine with a wet roller or wet filter to prevent mold/mildew. If you have spares you can swap out the wet ones for dry ones, and let the wet ones air dry. The Hydrovac has cut down on my cleaning time without any decrease in how clean the floors get. That’s worth five stars in my book! ... show more

  • Keeps 14 cats happy
I have been searching for a product to help me keep the floor clean which is 95% wood and constantly being abused by our cats, all 14 of them, all indoors always. Cats are mostly self-cleaning and do their business in the litter boxes except when they don't haha. Cat pee is pretty strong and will smell up your home quickly if not handled/cleaned properly. I found a product that controls the scent if used a lot on the fabric of the furniture, but bending over and kneeling on the floor wiping up a pee got very old and the search for a floor cleaner began. Tried a couple of brands of wet floor vacs but was not happy with the operation of their product. I saw the ads for the Shark and they of course looked good, but there was something about the simplicity and operation of the Shark that appealed to me....I ordered it. This sounds pitched, but as soon as I tried it I loved it. That evening I set out to clean all the floor spaces because I liked the smell of the cleaner agent and the floor looked great. Pretty simple to use. After all my experiences I knew to do some prep first on the floor. (1) Wipe up any damp fresh pee first. No need to suck up unnecessary pee and spread it around as you mop/clean....it just makes sense to do it this way as I have done all along. (2) Vacuum. Sure the Shark can do this as a process of cleaning, but only for small areas before you need to stop and empty the dirty water tank and remove larger collections of hair to help keep the vacuum working properly. Starting with a dry from pee, mostly dirt/hair-free floor will give the Shark its best performance. (3) Use your Shark. I do have a complaint. (1) The cleaning solution tank could be larger. My situation with 14 cats is far from normal and I have special needs, one of which is a lot of solutions for my bigger needs. (2) On that note I think the cleaner solution is expensive. It does seem to kill the smells very well, but it's still expensive. Overall the Shark does the job for me and if it works for me then there should be no reason it won't work for you. I give it 4 1/2 stars out of five. I like it. ... show more

  • Better than a mop and bucket
First of all, I really like the hydrovac. I have never liked mopping with a mop and bucket because while it is cleaning some, it is also spreading dirty water around. I also have some physical limitations and it so much easier to use the hydrovac and it cleans better than a mop. Unfortunately the initial one I received had an issue and wouldn’t dispense the water onto the roller. It would shut off after 5 seconds and the “clean water tank empty” light would come on even though it was completely full. I wanted to return it to Amazon for a replacement but was only given the option to get a refund, but since I bought it for 25% off during an Amazon deal which was over, I would have had to pay full price for a new one. I was trying to be thrifty so I contacted Shark and they sent me a new unit. Be aware though, that for warranty replacements, Shark will send you a refurbished unit and then the original warranty ends. That’s something I didn’t know beforehand and I’m not too thrilled about. Had I known I would have just returned it to Amazon and bought a new one. I have since done some research on Shark and they are not a brand I can support anymore and this will be the last Shark product I buy. Anyways I received the replacement in about 3 days and it works fine except for the top cord hook doesn’t lock into the 12 or 6 o’clock position like it should. As far as the hydrovac, it works very well for general mopping of my hard floors but I think there is some confusion on what the expectations are with this thing. I think the hyped up marketing and YouTube reviews are to blame and are a bit misleading. IMO it’s a lot to ask for this vac to clean up whole raw eggs and spaghetti o’s. While it can clean up food messes, the food gets broken up by the roller and gets all over the roller and in every crevice inside the vac which makes cleaning the vac much more involved and ends up being more difficult than just using paper towels and cleaning spray to clean the mess. It works best for general mopping or to clean the residue of a spilled mess after picking up the bulk of it with a paper towel (like a normal person). It is good at cleaning up spilled liquids which is the most I would use it for as far as food messes without some sort of pre-cleaning. I have been using it for general mopping of my kitchen and bathroom (roughly 150sq/ft) and it does work very well. Btw I do a quick sweep or vacuum first and I don’t rely on the vacuum function of the hydrovac because it doesn’t really work like a “3 in 1” like they advertise. The hydrovac only has a 200 watt motor so it’s power is not going to be very impressive compared to a 1,000+ watt motor in an upright or even a 400-500 watt motor in most stick vacuums. I think the vacuum function is really just to suck up the grey water and a little bit of debris. It does pick up debris left behind after vacuuming but if you don’t sweep first then cleaning the hydrovac after use will be more difficult. If you sweep first and only use it for mopping, cleaning the hydrovac is pretty easy. The self cleaning function seems to work pretty well. I was curious how well, so I washed the roller in the sink after the self cleaning and I didn’t see any grey water coming from the roller. I actually did this same test after mopping but before doing the self cleaning and to my surprise the roller still didn’t produce any grey water. This is good to know because it shows me that the roller is continually being cleaned while mopping and not spreading dirty water around like a traditional mop. So I guess the self cleaning cycle is cleaning the roller a bit especially if you use the hydrovac for cleaning up food messes but it’s probably mostly for cleaning the inside of the hoses and stuff. After mopping with the hydrovac, I did a couple spot test on different areas of the floor with a paper towel and some multi surface cleaner and the floor was spotless. As others have mentioned, the edge cleaning is probably the worst of all the floor cleaners and leaves about a 1 inch gap from the baseboard. Some other models have the roller go all the way to the edge which is better but you will still find areas that you can’t turn the vac around to get that side of the roller along the edge. To me the hydrovac does 95% of the job and if I have to use a swiffer to get along the edges then I’m ok with that. I decided on the hydrovac because of the price compared to the Tineco and others, and also because it’s the only one that is corded. Most of the cordless floor cleaners similar to the hydrovac have built in non replaceable batteries which won’t be worth diddly after a couple of years and I want the vac to last for a while, especially for the high price. Speaking of the cord, it does not have any kind of strain relief where the cord comes out of the unit. The 2 Shark vacuums I have owned had a nice big strain relief which is pretty crucial for the longevity of the cord so hopefully I don’t run into a cord issue in the future. Another thing to note is that overall the quality seems slightly cheap especially for how expensive it is. I would give the hydrovac itself 3 or 4 stars because while it does clean well, there is a definite lack of quality for the price and the disappointing lack of strain relief on the cord. I would give Shark 1 star for their questionable business practices and lack of effort spent on quality. Lastly, the hydrovac works well for the roughly 150sq/ft of hard floors in my apartment but if you have a large house with a lot of hard flooring then the hydrovac or any of these types of floor cleaners might not be adequate. The clean water tank is usually about 1/2 to 3/4 empty after mopping my 150 sq/ft, so if you have hundreds or thousands of sq/ft than you’ll be changing the water often. Overall it does clean very well but I can’t really stand behind Shark products anymore and I don’t really have a final recommendation on the hydrovac or other floor cleaners like these. ... show more
