I really love this hard-drive! Pros: The storage capacity of this hard drive is truly impressive. I was able to back up all my important files, including photos, videos, music, and documents, with plenty of space to spare. The transfer speed is very fast thanks to the USB 3.0 connection. I was able to transfer large files, such as high-resolution videos and RAW photo files, quickly and easily. The hard drive is very lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry around with me. I appreciate that it doesn't take up much space on my desk or in my bag. The design of the hard drive is sleek and modern, with a brushed metal finish that looks great. It matches well with my Mac mini and other devices. Setting up the hard drive was extremely easy. I simply plugged it into my MacBook Pro and was able to start transferring files immediately. I didn't have to install any software or drivers. The price of this hard drive is very reasonable, especially considering the large storage capacity and fast transfer speeds. Cons: While the hard drive isn't particularly loud, it can be a bit noisy when it's in use. I noticed a slight humming sound when transferring large files. The hard drive doesn't come with a protective case or cover, which could be a concern if you plan to travel with it frequently. I would recommend purchasing a separate case or sleeve to protect it from scratches and damage. This thing provides plenty of storage space and fast transfer speeds, making it an excellent choice for anyone who needs to back up large amounts of data. The hard drive is extremely lightweight, compact, and easy to use, with a sleek design that looks great. While the noise level and lack of a protective case are minor concerns, they do not detract from the overall quality and value of the product. If you're like me and love capturing every moment of your travels on your GoPro or Insta360 camera, then you know how quickly all those videos and photos can eat up your device's storage. That's why I decided to try out this portable drive, and I have to say, I'm thoroughly impressed! First off, the setup was a breeze. Solid external 8 TB drive. Perfect for storing large read-mostly datasets, such as video. This drive should also function well for incremental backup. Note that this drive uses SMR technology. This means that very large writes can slow down, and the average write bandwidth will be much lower than the peak write bandwidth. Do not use this for a long-duration, random-access, write-heavy workload, such as blockchain archival. I obtained mine in January 2021 and it has just begun to show signs of failure after two years of extensive use in a home-built ML server, well exceeding the annual data transfer (read/write) rating, and including over 10000 spinning hours. This should be interpreted as a positive; it is a sign of good robustness. The nature of the failure is gradual, not catastrophic: several uncorrectable sectors have appeared. As such, we are transitioning this drive to scratch storage use. Unfortunately all hard drives fail eventually. For critical data, use a multiple backup solution such as 3-2-1, ideally with redundancy in each layer such as RAID, to minimize the probability of data loss.

I bought the 16TB unit with front USB hub to store photographs and some miscellaneous files. My unit is connected to a dual-boot (Windows 10 & Ubuntu) laptop workstation through a USB hub. After I connected the USB cable, I plugged in the drive's power cord and Seagate One Touch Hub fired right up. I moved 50,000 files, totaling about 500GB to the drive to confirm that everything was working, and then fired up Lightroom and had it 'add' a year's worth of pictures to it's catalog. Everything worked fine. I then booted up Ubuntu to confirm that Ubuntu could see and access the disk, and it did so without any issues. While I did not benchmark the unit, it's speed seemed typical of other hard drives. That is, while much slower than a SSD, is plenty fast enough for photo storage. The unit has only a very small disk activity LED on the front of the unit. There are no other lights on the unit. When you first add the unit to a Windows system, the drive will appear in the 'Desktop' view of the File Manager. Normally File Manager defaults to showing you the 'Quick Access' - Frequent Folders and Recent Files view. The unit isn't silent - no hard disk drive is - and it does make sounds when it's spinning the disk platters up to speed after 'sleeping' and when the disk is moving the disk heads to read or write a file. The rest of the time the unit is essentially silent. It's safe to say that this disk is nosier than any disk I've had before (it's also a LOT bigger than any disk I've had before), but the sounds this unit makes are no louder than everyday background office noises. Personally, I don't find them objectionable. I am pleased with the 16TB Seagate One Touch Hub I purchased. The unit is performing like I expected it to, and I expect it will serve me well for a number of years.
