  • Competent Mac-compatible hard drive for both original data and backups.
Capacity: 22TB Style: Expansion Desktop HDD
I use a large external hard drive for two purposes: ordinary backup and to keep my very large ripped CD collection of music for which my main computer disc simply doesn't have room. The large size allows backups with multiple versions so I can go back in time if I need to. Belts and braces, an old school idea. My previous drive died suddenly and this was the best cost/size value I could find from a reputable vendor. In the past, I have had trouble with Seagate drives on my various Mac's, but this one worked immediately without a single problem. It is now handling all the relevant backups (there are several including some cloud stuff) and my music. It is quiet and, so far as I can tell, faster than the drive it replaced. It also seems to be interfering far less in other devices and their operations than the old drive did. That may be, however, because the old drive was complaining about being ill before it died completely and this new one is just being "normally" competent. I gave it 5 stars because it is doing what it is supposed to do without causing any trouble. Assuming it doesn't die a week from now, then it was a good buy. Do remember to reformat away from exFAT before using it on a Mac. ... show more

  • It works well for me, for now atl.
Capacity: 24TB Style: Expansion Desktop HDD
Great, for local storage either networked or not. Recommend replacing their garbage usb cable that comes with it (cable matters makes a good one). Pretty silent under low operation, speed is usb. Lifespan with seagate is hit or miss. I’ve had drives from them last a couple days and I’ve had drives last nearly a decade so hardware gambling. Wouldn’t recommend anything sensitive going on it, if it dies it’s gone. I use mine paired with a local caching machine for windows and steam updates. (Games too) it runs on the network via that “server” and as I learned when dealing with mechanical drives, don’t put stuff on it you can’t afford to lose. Was getting 460ish MB/s average read and 390ish MB/s write with your peaks and dips associated with HDD madness. ... show more

  • Ton of space, reasonable price, occasional noise
Capacity: 22TB Style: Expansion Desktop HDD
I recently picked up a 22TB external hard drive, and so far it’s been a great value for amount of storage you get. The capacity is huge for the price, which makes it appealing option if you need a lot of space without spending a fortune. Physically, it’s a typical external drive—nothing oversized or bulky—so it fits easily on a desk or shelf. One thing to note, though: it can get a bit loud at times. I wouldn’t recommend keeping it running full‑time in a quiet space like a bedroom office unless you don’t mind some background noise. My main use is offsite backups, so I only plug it in for short periods. Because of that, it’s too early to say much about long‑term reliability. Performance‑wise, it’s not the fastest drive out there, but it’s perfectly adequate for backup tasks and general storage. Overall, if you need a ton of space at a reasonable price and don’t mind occasional noise, it’s a strong choice. ... show more

  • Caution: Read Before You Buy A Seagate Harddrive
Capacity: 20TB Style: Expansion Desktop HDD
Do not purchase. Buy from any other well known hard drive company that offers good reviews and good warranty. I thought Seagate was good and used them for years and because of what I thought was a good warranty and data rescue plan, I bought their products. First I recently had a 20tb external drive I bought with I though had a Great warranty. After it stopped working before my warranty ended, I tried using the warranty and data rescue plan. First they tell you yes they will try to rescue your data if you send in your drive, but if they cannot do it they will only send you a new replacement, if you let them throw your old one away. I said no to this because if they cannot rescue my data I want someone else to try it again because my data is seriously irreplaceable. So their terms say they won't send me a new replacement if they cant throw mine away even if they cant rescue it. That is a big red flag. If the old drive breaks under warranty they should fix or replace it no matter what, but they state in their warranty that if you send your bad drive in under warranty they will automatically send you a new replacement you have to use while they try to rescue your old drive and data. I sent mine in and one of their replies even was they received it and they would send a replacement drive out soon while they retrieve data from my old one if they can. A few weeks later now I still never received the 20tb. External drive like they promised and I did just receive my successfully rescued data on a nice internal 20tb. Drive that I cant do anything with unless I install in my computer but I am using a laptop so it does me no good. They also even stated I should have either received a replacement external drive by now also or will soon. It has been a week now since they sent the internal drive and I have not heard anything about, or seen anything showing they sent me a external 20tb. Replacement. Although I am grateful they did rescue my data, I am very upset they did not send my replacement external drive as promised several times in their warranty and replies to me. So even though I bought a cheaper 6tb. Seagate external drive to hold me while I was expecting my 20tb. Replacement, I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER SEAGATE EVER, since they DO NOT COMOLETELY HONOR THEIR WARRANTY AS THEY SAY IT AND HAVE IT WRITTEN. Even though Seagate are slower than Western Digital, I always bought Seagate because I liked the way their warranty sounded much better so I trusted them. Now I will just go with Western Digital who I used for many years and actually never had one fail me yet, I only purchase more drives as I fill them up, but showing Seagate don't actually replace their broken ones with exact replacement drives also as they say in their warranty, I will myself and recommend everyone else purchase from Western Digital or another well branded hard drive company, NOT SEAGATE. This is all based off my 30 years experience and over 100s of Terabytes of data stored. ... show more

  • Good for a NAS build...
Capacity: 20TB Style: Expansion Desktop HDD
The external hard drive enclosure is slightly bigger than the actual hard drive itself. In my experience it has an okay speed. Not the fastest drive that I've used. The USB port is a normal usb-a 3.0 port so no usb-c. The power source has multiple adapters for people who would use it for their travels so no matter what kind of power outlet it present you should be okay. The design of the external case has openings to vent the heat coming from the actual hard drive inside. In terms of security, the drive is held in my rubber pads within the external enclosure that are surrounded by plastic tabs that hold it in. The external hard drive is a good choice to use for a NAS build if you are comfortable shucking the external case. The price is competitive when compared to a normal NAS internal drive. If you choose to go that route bear in mind that shucking the drive comes at the risk of voiding the warranty. Overall it's decent and has been running well on my NAS. The okay speed on the drive is the limiting factor which is why it's 4 out of 5 stars. Lastly the actual enclosure itself will still run other old drives if the ribbon cable and board aren't damaged during the shucking process. Any old 3.5 internal drives would work perfectly to recycle and not throw out the remaining hardware. ... show more

  • Consistent write performance, limited noise in serial read/write
Capacity: 22TB Style: Expansion Desktop HDD
As soon as I unpacked, I set up a copy of 6TB of photos, which it completed in 60h, at a speed of 28.39 Mbytes/sec. Up to expectations, and possibly limited by the older generation source drive. Noise-wise: in serial read or write the drive is fairly quiet, with the occasional thump when heads change track. In random read/write the thumping is more frequent and is strong enough to send vibrations though the desk it sits on to keyboard, despite the grippy rubber pads. Since the use is for back-up, and not for actual image processing, it doesn't actually bother me. A note to Mac users: you may want to disable the Spotlight indexing, which keeps the drive busy and noise (Settings / Spotlight / Search Privacy... / + ... show more

  • Great price for Drives
Capacity: 22TB Style: Expansion Desktop HDD
I needed some additional storage for backups...Seems everywhere drives are costing way more than they did last year. I have two Seagate 20TB drives and have never had a problem with them (Well except for one getting bricked by a bad hub). I have to admit they are a little loud compared to my other drives (WD, Toshiba), but that's no biggie. I found these to be a great bargain as I really don't need server grade drives for routine stuff. They shipped them out super fast! I was like a couple days..boom had drives-These guys rock! ... show more
